Pros:

Face cleared up a little.
Redness went down a little as well.
Pretty cheap.

Cons:

Takes a really long time to start working.
Some nausea.

Age: 19 Male Doxycycline takes a long time to start working. I was on it for a month and was also given Differn to put on at night by my Doctor. I coudln't take this medicine on an empty stomach or else I would become nauseas and uncomfortable for about an hour or so. After a month there wasn't much of a change and my Doctor took me off of it and told me to see a Dermatologist and talk about Accutane. Hopefully Accutane works, i've read a lot of great reviews for it. I'm only going to recommend this item because it did work a little and everyones skin is different so for some it could possibly work better.

Pros:

Cheap if you have insurance. Easy - just pop a pill 2x a day. I'm on the maximum dosage.

Cons:

Makes me nauseous sometimes, even if I've eaten. First month had heartburn/reflux so bad I considered quitting, now that has gone away.

Has helped me after 3+ months of taking it, my breakouts are much less frequent, less painful and less severe overall, but I'm still not clear like I want to be.

Cons:

I haven't seen much improvement in fact I'm starting to think that my face is getting worse. Sometimes my stomach will really bother me when I take it with food.

I'm waiting for skin improvement. It better be working by the third month.

December 15, 2008

Pros:

Cysts and swelling under the skin will go down within 24 hours. Very good for body acne esp. on chest and back.

Cons:

severe stomach cramps at first, loss off appetite, exacerbates depression

I have been on this product for a year and I believe its worth it. It saved me from having acne scars because it got rid of deep penetrating cystic acne. It by no means cleared up my topical acne though. You need to take it with food and avoid dairy products within an hour or two of taking it. Its not an easy treatment but preventing deep scars is worth your while.

Pros:

Easy to take (I have Doryx, which can be taken with food)

Cons:

Fatigue and depression, not doing anything for back acne

I really think I'm immuned to antibiotics since I've had like 10 rounds of them. My face is clearing, but I attribute that to Tazorac. I haven't been using topicals on my back, hoping Doryx would take care of it, but it hasn't helped at all.
December 3, 2008

Pros:

none for me

Cons:

this product made my skin really oily and didnt do anything for me, well other then maybe make my acne worse. It has been 3 monthes and there is no improvment. and sometimes it feels like it is stuck in your throat and if u dont eat with it, you puke

didnt do much, but everyone's skin is dif.
December 2, 2008

Pros:

Easy to take

Cons:

Stomach aches, have to stay out of the sunlight

I havent been on it for very long, but my acne has got about 50 percent worse. I read most the reviews, and in general, most everyone is saying it will go away.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
