Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Clears up all acne

Cons:

I didn't have any serious side effects. The worst was a tingly feeling in my hands and sensitivity to hot and cold things on my hands.

If you're interested in, and determined to have clear skin. This will work despite the side effects, everyone has a different reaction, but the bottom line is that it will clear your skin

Pros:

Cleared up most of my big acne spots
I didn't experience any sensitivity to the sun or nausea when I took it without food

Cons:

Still had small whiteheads and redness
Made my skin MUCH worse during the first 1-1.5 months, leading to bad scarring
Took a while to work

Doryx (150 mg/day) did wonders for my severely infected facial acne, however I did not even begin to see result for about 7 weeks. After that, bam! all of my big breakouts and cysts disappeared within a week. Don't give up on this product if you don't see results within 6 weeks (the standard amount of time that people use to judge the effectiveness of a product). Also, don't give up if you break out like crazy during the first month or so.

Pros:

I ve used it for like 4 days in conjunction with defferin@night and [email protected] few bumps that i ve had dried up.Minimal dryness,no itching or peeling yet, maybe too early..but yeah.. overall good stuff.

Cons:

Given that my problem is mostly hyperpigmentation and dark spots,it has not really improve that for me but again maybe too early.but i think notice more darkining..i dnt knw if its the topical gels or the doxi.

Every skin is different and if u dnt try,u would'nt knw what woks for u..So try it and please give it time...dnt be like me that expect miracles always.

Pros:

I have only taken this drug for 5 days and already I've noticed my skin seems clearer.

Cons:

extreme nausea, bloating, retaining water weight, gas, WEIGHT GAIN, a lot of long term side effects like yeast infection, vision loss, depression. It just doesn't seem worth it to me.

I'll admit, I was pretty anxious to finally be able to use something for my skin that would clear it up without having to deal with any major side effects. I guess that's what led me to overlook a lot of the things that I ended up experiencing in only 5 days of taking this drug. I love working out and keeping myself active, but after starting this drug.. it makes me feel extremely sick to my stomach while working out. (and while not working out) I've even noticed i've put on a few extra pounds already. Honestly, I think I can handle a few extra zits as opposed to gaining extra pounds along with the risk of harming my overall health. No thank you.

Pros:

cheap

Cons:

After 1 day of taking this antibiotic, I started to get a mild rash all over my body. Not horrible itchy, but lots of little tiny bumps. Plus a more flaky, itchy kind of rash on the tip of my nose (why?)

Not sure why, but my skin reacted poorly to this antibiotic, gave me lots of little bumps all over my body.

Pros:

Its a very good thing to take when eveything else has failed. Even if it takes a while it WILL WORK!!

Cons:

I've taking it twice (A PERIOD OF 4 MONTHS EACH TIME) and it only works while you take it. As soon as you stop the acne comes back so that kinda SUCKS!!!

I MEAN THE PILLS DO WORK IF U GIVE THEM A CHANCE THEY MIGHT TAKE A WHILE BUT EVENTUALLY THEY'LL DO THEIR JOB!!EVEN THOUGH MY ACNE CAME BACK SOON AFTER I STOPPED TAKING THEM AT LEAST U KNOW U'LL HAVE A CLEAR FACE WHILE U TAKE THEM!!

Pros:

I have been taking this for the past 7 months and I couldn't have asked for anything better! My acne is gone and my face is as smooth as a baby's bum!

Cons:

Dries the face up a bit and still get the odd couple every now and then but nothing too big!

Stopped taking them 2 days ago and my face is still good. Just hoping acne doesn't come back...

Pros:

Slightly Cleared

Cons:

On and off Breakouts/clearing
Nausea (depends on factors)
Skin rash/spots/burns (read more)

I'm currently on 100MG taking it twice daily. I'm not 100% sure if it's working, but I would rather take this over accutane. You can puke if you don't eat a decent meal with the pill. I like to tan, to try and help my skin out.. But I can hardly do 4 minutes in the bed. I will rash and get white spots on my chest. It's starting to get better the more I do it.

Pros:

-Clears Quickly (I have non-cystic breakouts)
-No initial breakout ^^
-No Side Effects while on it
-No drowsiness

Cons:

-Loses its effectiveness
-Gave me side effects off of it
-Breakouts are Really likely to come back
-Doesn't work 100% after all

Okay so I'm a 14 year old girl that's been having problems with breakouts for over 2 years. They were never Cystic or really huge, but I would get 4 or 5 pimples on my cheeks and they weren't exactly ever acne but more less the problematic breakout. I always thought it was hormonal (i also have oily skin). When I started using this instantly my face cleared up in just a week. Really no new spots after I started taking it. (One tablet a day). I'm now on my 11th day and the product is already losing its effectiveness. I found a new spot this morning on my cheek. As for the side effects I got none while i'm on it. But i forgot to take my pill earlier this week and I had nausea and bad stomach pain while off it. I took the pill later that night though. And I pretty much knew that once I got off it that my problems would return... I don't recommend this pill. Even if your breakouts aren't severe or cystic it doesn't initially solve any of your problems in the long run. Just kind of gets your hopes up for a couple weeks. I was iffy about using it in the first place because I read a lot of reviews on this and they all were about the same. Helps some, or clears you up but after you stop the use of it your problems come back worse.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
