Pros:

The pimples on my chin have cleared up almost instantly, and I can see that it's working on the rest of my face and my chest and back.

Cons:

I was prescribed Doxy with Epiduo and a benzoyl peroxide wash, and after only two days of taking it, my skin is red, scarring, blotchy, and flaking off. I'm not sure if it's because of the combination, or just the Doxy, but I'm quite upset.

Try it on its own before using other products with it.

Pros:

It is affordable for those people like me without insurance.

Cons:

It causes headaches and nausea (sometimes even taken with food). Does not work well for clearing up my acne.

I have been using this product for more than a year and I have seen very little improvement in my acne. I noticed more of an improvement by being on it than being off of it which is the only reason I continue to take it. I have no insurance and it is more affordable than other products out there so the little bit of control I get with it helps, but not by much. I still have at the very least four blemishes at any given time consistently. I would recommend another treatment if you can afford it.

Pros:

Reduces occurrence of pimples and blackheads a bit

Cons:

Red sunburnt skin
Makes oral contraceptive use risky

The redness wasnt worth the pimple reduction. My doctor said it didn't work particularly well for me and put me onto retin-a which then burnt my skin off and plasma was like leaking from my face and all of my clothing was covered in white skin cell dust. The pill (juliet/diane) worked the best in the end.

Pros:

Mild reduction of some breakouts and redness. Generic was cheap.

Cons:

Didn't feel it worked too well. Can't take dairy products within 2 hours before or after.

Used in combination with Retin A. My skin hasn't cleared up too much at all. I've been doing readin about the tetracycline family, and have learned that p acnes (the bacteria that we want dead) have evolved to be resistant to this particular family of anti-bactirias. THis makes since since my dad had bad acne and took anti-biotics as a teen as well. But, the genirc (got mine from Target) was only like six bucks for a months supply, so I guess why not take it.

Pros:

Works for many people.
Generic is very affordable.

Cons:

Bacteria become resistant.
Upset stomach.
Not always a long-term fix.

Doxy works by directly killing the bacteria that causes acne. Once doxy is discontinued, the same bacteria come back because they are a natural part of everyone's skin. Depending on various individual factors, this may or may not lead to the return of acne. Furthermore, doxy is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that also affects other, beneficial bacteria, such as those in your GI tract, so can make you nauseated. Definitely take doxy with food to avoid this, but be sure to wait two hours before having any dairy or iron because it interferes with absorption. Also, doxy should not be taken by young children (especially those under 8) because it interferes with bone growth and can stain teeth, Sadly, bacteria can become resistant, making doxy completely ineffective (like happened for me). Overall, doxy is a very useful medicine to clear up skin but, once clear, you should look into switching to something else to avoid becoming resistant and the other side effects.

Pros:

It isw affordable, thats about it.

Cons:

It hasn't clear my acne at all. I thought this would work but again FAIL! I am switching dermatologists and let's see if this new one can help me, again this drug has not helped me at all and I get terrible nausea and headaches from it. Not worth it.

Switch to other medications or doctors, this medication did not help me at all.
October 21, 2009

Pros:

Cleared up big pimples, and most acne.

Cons:

Left me with little bumps, gave me a stomach ache TAKE WITH FOOD!

i give this credit for clearing up most of my acne and my big pimples. But it did leave me with little tiny acne bumps under the skin. I used this product for 6 months and then was able to go off it and now i use just cleansing stuff and my face is clear.

Pros:

I just started taking doxycline about two weeks ago

Cons:

i have seen any real results but then again i have only been on it for 2 weeks

I tried differen and cylindagel together and it did very little for me so my derm. perscribed doxycline. As well as taking doxycline i am still on differen and cylindagel. They said that i shouldnt see results until the 6 week point. I was reading other reviews and it seems like everyone gets sick from this medicine, but i will take it on an empy stomach and it is fine, besides on the bottle it says take on and empty stomach and dont eat for 1-2 hours. I also dont understand how everyone got this medicine for so cheap, i have insurence and the dema. gave me a coupon and it was still 25 dollars for 30 pills

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
