Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

I often had those thick white pimples on my face which leave thick dark scars, I took it for a vaginal thrush and noticed that I had no more breakouts on my face.

Cons:

You have to drink it with lots of water and with food.

It helps a lot so try it.

Pros:

It is really cheap and helps somewhat with acne.

Cons:

It does give me a stomach ache, but only if I dont eat first. If taken on an empty stomach it sucks. I havent noticed and awesome progress with my acne, but some minimal healing has occurred.

Cheap drug and you prob get what you pay for. Nothing great, might work for mild acne situations.

Pros:

Made my acne go away in a couple of weeks

Cons:

Sometimes it would upset my stomache if i took it without food.

When I was 16 I had the worst acne break out ever. It was during the summer and I was going 2 be too emberassed to go back 2 school with acne skin. Well I used this and within weeks I had clear skin. I loved it until I became immune to it within 2 years. But while it worked it was great.

Pros:

clear beautiful almost porcelin skin, cheap as chips

Cons:

acne comes back a couple of months after being of doryx

i was on doryx for about a year and a half and i was so so happy with the results, i had terrible acne and this sure did fix it. i had smooth skin and suffered no side effects. then i went off doryx and it all came back ten times worse and my doctor prescribed me the oral contraceptive and acne treatment, dian 35. now this just made me six kilos heavier, depressed and made my acne worse. so now i have been back on doryx for almost a week and i can already see a significant improvement in my skin. i would definately recomend this if you have severe acne like me

Pros:

none

Cons:

made me throw up if i didnt eat with it. after 3weeks the side effects set in currently i stopped taking it in hopes these side effects go away for the past two days i've felt absolutely exhausted and have started to black out and throw up

horrible product didnt work at all is making me very sick and its quite scary i went to go to the bathroom and i began to black out couldnt see anything and began stumbling. i couldnt get out of bed for two days i was so exhausted. I have yet to get better. funny thing is they use the same anti-biotic to treat anthrax exposure and pneumonia so it is a very strong anti-biotic.

Pros:

cleared up all my cystic acne and big blemishes

Cons:

it takes a few weeks for it to properly kick in, still u hav to stick 2 it every day (routine is the only way!!!)

just after xmas my skin broke out sooo badd! i felt realy low and cudnt bear college, work and even tlkin to my friends. however i started to take 100mg of doxy once a day every morning with water and i hav dun so for the last 6 weeks without fail and my skin is looking so much better. i am also using a differin gel (0.1%)every night which also helps out alot. The only problem is that i have quite alot of scarring from my massive break out after xmas but there is no inflammation.

Pros:

Worked ok. alot better than erithromysin (clearly not how you spell it but i dont really care)

Cons:

None what so ever. Cant belive some people would say they had side affects as its not xactly the strongest of anti biotics. well suppose everyones diffrent :-D !

I have been takeing doxycycline on and off for alomost 2 years. its not the best and im waiting on a dermotologist apointment. but for now it works alright and if i was to stop taking the treatment you would notice a change. (as in i would have more spots). Nhss :-D I didnt pay for it as i am only 15 <3.

Pros:

ive been taking doxy since the 9th feb (so about 6 weeks) and my skin's slightly better. the clear areas of my skin and t zone are perfect. after the first 2 weeks my skin imporved heaps.. but then it went a bit downhill again.

Cons:

there isnt much noticeable difference overall and my skin is quite dry and sensitive..

anyone know how long u gt to wait till u see much difference? and shud i stick at it? im taking 100mg once a day which i think is a pretty low dose... also wen im in the sun my skin seems to burn more easily and im scaring quite a bit :S. ive heard this works for other ppl and its cheap so its worth a shot but i'd say stick at it...

Pros:

I loved this stuff!!! I was clear for over a year and was the only med that worked for me!

Cons:

I would throw up if didn't eat before taking, after about a year i became allergic to the stuff and i got a rare reaction which made my nails lift up and discolor

Great if you don't get the reaction i had, but I was told that was super rare. Have to eat before taking!!!

Pros:

Cleared up alot in less than a week, made scars much lighter.

Cons:

Make sure to drink lots of water and eat something when you take it, I woke up and took it right away and it gave me a stomach ache and diarria

It works alot and you should at least try it... Dont give up it you get a lil sick...

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
