Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

I had used this doxy. before 3 months for 1 week bcos of one or two acne on my face mainly for redness & inflammation. It make small acne into very cysts big acne. I taken on night and when saw my face on mirror in morning my two small acne become very big cysts acne with full pledged. still i does not lose hope. Dont to be over confidence on this doxy... i also used azithromycin .no antibiotic is suitable for me.usually i have 1 or 2 acne but my face with many zits, scar, pigmentation,redness..Now i lose hope on taking antibiotic..Now i just apply fresh neem leaves paste in my head, face, neck & shoulders wait for 5 minutes then i rinse with water.I strongly believe in this method with 2 days i saw dramastic result on my face.. no need to take antibiotic and make me to feel sick.Neem is antibacterial, anti fungal and anti viral.Permanent solution for acne.Dont masturbate for 2 week to see results.

Pros:

I have noticed that the size of cyst have lowered alot. Have been having less and less breakouts a week.

Cons:

Face is very sensitive to the sun. Upset stomach when not taken with food.

I have used this product for about 3 months before. I was clear of acne for an entire summer with very few breakouts here and there but no new cyst. About a few weeks ago when summer was ending and school was starting up, I started notcing cyst forming around my left cheek. I immediately went to my physician to renew my presriciption to doxycycline. Since I have been using doxy again about 2 weeks ago I noticed that those cyst have lowered since then. I still experience breakouts here and there but nothing but nothing as bad. I still suffer from new acne but cysts have decreseased since renewing my prescription. I also suffer from scars left from the cyst but have noticed a slight imporvement. Overall i suggest using this antibiotic if you are experiencing cystic acne. If it doesnt work immediately, just wait it out and you will start seeing improvements the more consistint u are with the medication

Pros:

Cleared up my acne very quickly...been using this medication in addition to Retin-a and has worked wonders.

Cons:

Sun sensitivity and get some stomach aches every now and then but over all Ive been able to tolerate it.

Been using retin-a for 10 yrs now and was starting to develop cystic acne around my chin so my doctor gave me this medication to try in addition to my retin-a and I have noticed a big change. My acne has cleared up 90% ,my skin looks alot smoother and my pores are smaller.

Pros:

Does work in time

Cons:

Takes a looooooooong time to work, and I don't like taking medication for a long time. Also gave me terrible, terrible nightmares, which is common.

If it starts to give you nightmares, switch.

Pros:

less cysts, slows the acne process

Cons:

works moderately well, don't expect this to be the cure for acne, it merely suppresses it, and doesn't exactly get rid of acne completely.

i've been taking the antibiotics this with retin-a micro. I fully regret it all. but because this is a review for doxycycline i will say that it definitely works, but its just not something you can keep taking for the rest of your life (at least to me it just doesn't seem right) If you guys want to slow down your acne, its good, but don't expect any cures, or a completely clear skin.... I dont know what it was but after i started this regime (retin-a & doxy) my skin has been so ridiculously oily, it is the worst my skin has ever freaking been... I recently stopped using doxycycline and i'm starting to get these random cyst (not a lot just a few) around my jaw line and neck, body acne is kind of increasing again i am now considering accutane

Pros:

None? It didn't work one bit.

Cons:

For some strange reason, it made me throw up some nights.

Maybe I'm simply resistant to antibiotics and if you are too it probably won't work for you either.

Pros:

Works quite well since the results is observable. Less oily and lessen the acne that popped out.

Cons:

Stomach felt very painful if the pills are taken on empty stomach. I've even experienced acidic stomach and had to consult the doctor to prescribe me with the suitable medicine. All of that happened just because I slept right after taking the pill.

It works but follow the rules of eating it. Or else, you'll experience this damn painful stomach stress.

Pros:

Noticed results on second day of use. Skin isn't as oily, no new whiteheads appeared by the time I wake up, scarring has decreased, redness around my cheeks and under the eyes have decreased, skin tone is more even. Less dryness and irritation.

Cons:

Stomach has felt a little strange. It's not a problem and drinking water or having a little food seems to help. I've also started drinking more water and that's something else my body is getting used to.

The first week has been great. Clear difference in 48 hours. Not only is that still the case, the overall condition is improving daily. I've had acne since I was 13. I'm almost 24. All that time I have suffered and it's really knocked my confidence. Even now, even though I can honestly say for the first time in several years that I'm starting to feel a little happy about my skin, I still don't feel confident. No doubt the acne has left some mental scars in that respect, and in the long term I pretty much lost all my social circle through lack of confidence - I hardly ever went out! But, as the condition of my skin improves, so should my confidence, along with my happiness and my social circle. It's early days, but I'm looking forward to seeing what happens thanks the results of the medication.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
