Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Im 24 years old and i had acne problems since i was 15 years old. My brother was in the same boat as i am .Anyways he went to the doctors and he was prescribed doxy and a face cream.however the pills made him sick, so he stopped taking them. So i thoughtmaybe i give them a try and in to weeks of taking them my face waas totaly cleared. But then as soon as i stopped the acne came back but anyways i went ot get them refilled and they work great it just sucks that i have to worry on pills everyday to make my face clear but what else can i do right its worth it. So i think of it this way instead of worrying alllllll day abhout what ima do with my face I worry twice a day that takes seconds of taking theppill.

Pros:

worked very well within a few weeks. I did have some stomach upsets, but with food and plenty of water you're fine. It really cleared up my face, although blemishes were still present

Cons:

Had to wait for an hour or so before you could lay down. Rembering to take at certain hours so that you don't miss your dose and wait for the next. Nausea if you don't take it with food. You had to exclude dairy foods when taking this Rx.

Works well, but you need to stay on it until your doc says get off of it. If you get off of it completely and come back on after a year or so, it may not work the same because your body is now immune to the Rx.

Pros:

Convienient and easy to take
Cheap with insurance

Cons:

Didn't help acne at all
I now have temporary hypertension

Did not help Acne at all. One side effect that many people do not know about is high blood pressure. If you have taken this med for longer than a month you should check your blood pressure at your local walmart or other places that offer this free service.

Pros:

Slowly clears acne

Cons:

1) Takes at least 2-3 months before you see any results.
2) Did make acne worse initially
3) Causes discharge.
4) Must also take Probiotics to prevent and cure discharge.

Profile: 28 yr old female South Asian Poor diet Moderately Severe Acne, mainly cystic acne around chin and neck I was on Doxycycle 100mg/day for about 3 months. I noticed it BEGAN to work in the 3rd month. Initially it made my acne worse like I was told. However, by the fourth month I began to take Minocycline because I wasn't sure if Doxcycle was working (but it did) and Minocycline was stronger and supposedly works faster. Which it did but results only last 2- 3 months. I was back on Doxycycle 200mg/day by my 6 month but saw no results in the 1st and 2nd month of being back so I quit taking it. My derm said Doxycycle and Monocycline are beginner antibiotics.

Pros:

Got rid of blackheads

Cons:

Gave me worse acne. Cysts, whiteheads, the whole shebang. Made me tired. Scarring.

I tried it for 2 weeks with Ziana and a benzoyl peroxide wash. When my acne got worse, I quit using the topic stuff. I was just on the pill for 3 weeks and my acne got worse. I quit it and my face is still recovering. Gotta go hit up my derm yo.

Pros:

- actually cleared acne by 90%
- very easy: just pop a pill once a day

Cons:

- takes quite a long time (for me, 6-8 months)
- reduced degree of, but did not eradicate monthly breakout

Yes, I would recommend this, but just keep in mind it takes what seems like forever to work, and in the end I still got monthly breakouts which would take half a month to heal completely so in the end I was only about 95% clear for 1/2 the time. If it interests you, I am now on birth control pills to "keep my hormones in check" which I believe is the sole problem of my acne.

Ive only taken this for 2-3 days now, ill probably write another review later. My kind of acne is not the nodular, pustule types but i tend to get loads of whiteheads over my nose and sides of nose area because I constantly sweat loads there. The whiteheads and sweat also constantly make my nose look really red. What ive found is that doxycycline has stopped my sweat production in this area which was one of the main reasons why i got so much acne there. It has calmed the whiteheads from coming and therefore my nose does not look red. One problem i do have now though is that it makes my face feel really dry and tight all over but jojoba oil helps this. Ive had this problem for years, doxycycline is the only thing that has stopped this.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
