Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Once a day, side effects not that severe.

Cons:

Ineffective. I've been on the drug for over two months now, and my acne has gotten WAY worse, and not better at all. Absolutely terrible.

Probably good for some kinds of acne, but not good for mine (which is mild, so that's odd that it had no effect).

Pros:

Not seen any so far

Cons:

acne has actually got a lot worse, sore cysts especially on chin

Going back to see dermatologist to try something else

Pros:

Since acne is partially created by bacteria, it cleans from the inside. It's a daily pill which requires no creams or washes.

Cons:

Made me feel extremely nauseous, so so results, long period needed to see results, and need to stay of it to keep results.

Personally the nauseousness and constant cycles of taking these pills stopped me from taking them again. The pill does help acne but must be taking for a constant and sustained period of time.

Pros:

It's definitely made my acne less red and less frequent after only a few weeks

I take it an hour after eating with 2 full glasses of water and I haven't had any stomach problems so far

Cons:

I recently noticed a number of rashes on my skin. I don't know if this is just due to the fact that antibiotics due that sometimes due to bacterial imbalance or if I'm having a negative reaction
I don't like the idea of taking antibiotics for so l

See how it works for you. Everybody is different

Pros:

Cleared up back acne within a few days. Notice my facial skin is clearing a bit up as well.

Cons:

a little bit of an upset stomach. I could see this getting pricey.

Was skeptical but worked much better than i imagined. Just a bit worried reading some of the other reviews here about breaking out once you stop taking though

Pros:

Cleared up my face almost completely within only 1 week, starts working very fast!

Cons:

After 3 wks I started noticing a sensitivity to heat and cold in my hands and feet, like pins and needles. When cold wind would come up, it felt like rain on my hands, in the shower my feet and hands would burn. I found out it was an allergic reactio

I would definitely reccomend it, but beware of any allergic reactions...the side effects (like sensitivity to sunlight) didn't start occuring until I was on the medication for a little while. Very important to drink lots of water and don't take it on an empty stomach. If it makes you feel nauseous then I would reccomend buying yogurt like Bio-K or dan actives, the good bacteria in them helps replace the stuff you need that the antibiotic kills.

Pros:

Clears up your skin really well - Made my skin 95% clear and I had severe acne.

Cons:

If you quit, you WILL go back to breaking out, in most cases, more severely than before. Long term antibiotic usage causes candida overgrowth giving you small white bumps over your face.

I wish I never took Doxycycline or any other antibiotic for that matter, because I used to have minor acne, and now it's much worse because I quit. I know that once I get back on it, it'll make things better, but I hate the side effects of candida and skin darkening because of sun sensitivity.

Pros:

none

Cons:

does nothing at all
you have to take a pill every day or twice a day
makes skin worse then ever

I've been on it four months. It never helped and now my skin is worse than it has ever been before. Does nothing for me at all. When I first started taking it it made me feel extremely sick on my stomach for a few hours after taking it, even when taking it with a small meal as suggested. I'm going off doxy
March 17, 2008

Pros:

None :(

Cons:

Didn't work at all. Gave my stomach aches.

I faithfully took 200 MG of doxy a day for about 6 months... Once I quit my skin was EXACTLY the same as it was when I was on doxycycline. Of course I broke out a few days after I quit, but that's to be expected. Really a waste of money for me. If you're expecting to try this stuff my derm said to expect full results in 2 months. If your skin is the same after 2 months, I'd suggest you quit because it's not going to work any better after that. Hope I could be of some help! P.S. If you want to avoid stomach aches take this stuff with food, but avoid milk as some people say it interferes with absorption.

Pros:

Worked straight away skin cleared up and heeled scares

Cons:

skin sensitive but using SPF 15 protection helped

I was told to take vitamin ABC in the morning which is combined in one capsule, then take Doxycycline 100mg tablets at lunch time with food, and zinc 15mg tablet at night. It really helped its been 6 months of pure bliss. I stopped taking Doxycycline after a month becuase thats the recommended allowance however kept on taking my vitamins. I havn't had even one brake out, this is highly recommended by me.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
