Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Works really well

Cons:

Taking it on an empty stomach

It really works especially with cysts or nodules. been on it for 3 weeks. it takes awhile to see results. i am still experiencing breakouts, not bad though. the pimples dont last that long.my skin is really oily still. i don't think that doxy is suppose to be helping with that but it seems it's more oily than usual. hopefully it keeps working for me. im worried about my body becoming resistant to the drug. if that happens than im switching to acctuane.

Pros:

Clearer skin, less breakouts.

Cons:

Bloating, tiredness, awful nausea on the third day when I took it on an empty stomach.

I've always had slight-moderate acne, but 2008 was blessed with great skin thanks to a wonderful spa facialist. However, she left the city and within 4 months, I grudgingly accepted that the acne's back. Lived with a horrible outbreak for about 3 months until I consulted my GP. She prescribed me Doxycycline, starting with 2 a day, and she reduced it to one after 3 weeks. That first week I started, I could swear that my skin looked amazing - smooth and slowly clearing out - but maybe it was just me, psyching myself that it totally works? But anyway, six months on, I'm comfortable with this antibiotic. Some spots when it's the time of the month, but those go away pretty fast. Otherwise, skin's good! Again, there is no miracle cure and everyone responds differently, but Doxycycline works for me. :)

Pros:

It seems to have cleared up my acne, along with the birth control pills I was taking.

Cons:

I'm very vulnerable to yeast infections. I know it's gross, but did anyone else have this problem?

I realize I can't be on birth control pills and antibiotics forever. I just hope that when I get off of this, I won't start breaking out again. I really can't take the yeast infections anymore.

Pros:

My acne cleared up about 2 months after using this product. Do not take without eating food before.

Cons:

I experienced some of the few side effects of the drug. I felt very depressed, had suicidal thoughts throughout the night, constant masturbation and errections lasted well over 4 hours

Cleared up acne, but side effects were not worth it

Pros:

Pill is very small. Easy to take. Works on a multitude of bacteria and various illnesses.

Cons:

Takes forever to start working. Upsets my stomach if taken w/o food. Can only be taken with certain foods, conflicts with A LOT of other meds. Cannot lie down for 30 min after taking it.

I have been on this medicine for about 3 weeks. I have not missed a day. I take 1 100mg tablet daily. I have not noticed any improvement in my skin and have actually had 1 bad breakout since I've been on it. My acne is under the skin ( no raised pimples) but about a week ago I got the meanest pimple ever on my face and back! I have a 2 month prescription so I will continue to take it. I hope it works, if not, the next step will be laser skin resurfacing (Obaji).

Pros:

Cheap and should bring positive results.

Cons:

Takes for ever to work, at least in my case, it has not been effective to say the least.

First of all, the puking seems to be myth. I dont feel any symptoms of puking nor nausea. The problems is that it has not work for me. My dermatologist took me off after two months and gave me a drug from the penicillin family. That didnt work either, now the head of the dermatologist office i attend, started me again on Doxy. He said that Doxy works on 99% of his clients, probably exaggerated but seems to comfortable with the drug for putting me back on it after his son took me out from using it. I assume it is long, long process before i actually see result, though i am getting very frustrated!

Pros:

*clears up persistent cystic acne fairly well - smooths complexion & *decreases clogged pores noticeably.

Cons:

*EXTREME nausea & vomiting within 3-5 minutes if taken without food
*not a complete solution

had been on Ampicillin 3x per day - went to new clinic & was given Doxy 100 mg 2x per day. i have persistent moderately severe cystic acne & Doxy definitely cleared it right up for the first four months...however, it is not working as well as before (keeping massive breakouts at bay, but still getting a cyst every now and then). currently taking 100 mg Doxy 2x per day along with benzoyl peroxide, Clindamycin, & Tretinoin as last ditch before Accutane - combo appears to be working well, but just wondering how long i can stay on ALL these medications. only downside to Doxy being if i take without food or with only water (i don't have any problems if i drink a glass of milk beforehand) i will have near INSTANTANEOUS vomiting within 3-5 minutes. i am not a huge eater, so this is a slight annoyance.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
