Pros:

not too expensive, not too harsh, always has worked for me

Cons:

occasional random pimples (probably from stress)
some random dryness, but it's very tolerable for the clear skin i have.

After severe acne and two rounds of Accutane, I gave proactiv a shot. I have never tried Murad or the knock off brands of Proactiv, but I love this product. It has kept my face from being oily and has kept my skin clear. I use it every other day in conjunction with my Purpose bar soap.

Pros:

pros? what pros?

Cons:

Makes skin DRY.. makes you break out EVEN MORE! is a WASTE of money!

I had nice skin, but with kickboxing and having vasaline slobbered all over my face before training and fights.. the sweat and vasaline would clog my skin and made me break out a little bit. I tried proactive for 2 weeks.. and holy @#$%.. my face has never looked this bad EVER! i look like a kid who just hit puberity! my forehead is a disaster.. and chin line broke out. My skin go SO DRY that on the 3rd day it was like.. flakey.. i had to switch to my Dove moistureizer. which for $8.99 WORKED! This stuff is crap.. made my situation worse.. and now i have to clear it up another way.. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Thanks for ruining my face Proactive.. idiots..

Pros:

None

Cons:

Really dry skin in the beginning, but your skin does get used to the product.

Thought in the beginning it was working, but after 4 months my skin is worse than ever. Expensive - don't waste your money. Also, the service from the company is horrendous, the worst I have ever experienced from an onlince company. My daughter on the other hand, has had great success with the product.

It is the only product that cleared up my severe acne! I had used it for almost a year and it reduced my pimples significantly along with redness on my face! It increased it at the beginning but everyone noticed how much my skin had cleared. Murad did not work for me, any drug store products were drying my skin too much. I stopped using Pro-Active after a year and my skin still have blackheads and redness but I do not have ugly red pimples all over it. Unfortunately, after moving to Southwest, I could not used Pro-activ anymore because it started to dry my skin out too much. I still use their refining mask once in a while, though. I am not sure if climate added to that or other factors but I can honestly say that i had a dramatic results with proactive.

Pros:

works fast, fades dark spots, moisterizes skin

Cons:

none

some people say proactiv is too many steps..that is not true its a cleanser a toner and a lotion/ which is what you should be doing to your skin everyday anyway....the truth is....proactiv works...it has been the only thing tha has worked on my skin. i only experienced dryness with the product if i used too much of the product, you only need a litttle of the cleanser and a little of the lotion and you will see how soft and smooth your skin becomes within like 2 weeks of using it....it also faded my dark spots and gave my skin a glowing complexion, i have stopped using it couple times to try new products only for the acne to come back worse and end up going back to it....it truly is amazing.....some people complain about when you stop the acne comes back....well they should know, there is no cure for acne, so once you stop treatmen of course it will come back if you have acne prone skin

Pros:

It works. Easy to use. Reasonably priced for what it does. No side effects. Cleanser smells pretty good - sort of like lemon.

Cons:

None I can think of.

When nothing else did, this worked for me. I have adult acne that is hormonally caused. I was very skeptical, but I bought and used the package as recommended by the dermatologist. I used all three products as directed. In the past, I've tried EVERYTHING from Retina to Tazorac to Differin, antibiotics, Cleocin, benzoyl peroxide. Accutane did make a difference, but didn't get rid of it completely forever. After the first few years the acne returned, but not as bad as before. I did not have much hope for this stuff, but it has surprised me. It is amazing stuff if it could fix my problem. I am VERY impressed. I am taking things that are even making my hormone problem worse (Hormone replacement therapy, DHEA, testosterone, etc.) Normally, my monthly cycle plus these supplements definitely would cause my skin to go berzerk, but this stuff is good enough to overcome even that.

Proactiv not for long term use. acne will get worse and product is overpriced
Proactiv will initially help to clear your skin (not a cure for acne by any means) but its effectiveness will decrease over time. If you look at the amount of money you pay (or are forced to pay) for proactiv it is actually a lot cheaper to go to a dermatologist and get an individualized treatment plan for your acne. I got tired of not seeing results and decided to go to a dermatologist. Too much to pay for proactiv for no results.

DO NOT USE AS OVERNIGHT SPOT TREATMENT
It burned my skin so bad that I'm still scabbing. Even as a quick face wash, that "icy slap" feels more like burn that leaves your skin extra dry. There's nothing in it that helps hydrate your skin. Please don't waste your money.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
