It's working
I've used Proactiv before (old formula) and it seemed to keep my acne under control. I stopped using it on two different occasions for different reasons: 1st for financial and 2nd for a recurrence of breakouts. After this second time,I just resorted to living with acne. I've always tried to eat a healthy diet. A low GI diet definitely helped. Years later I had someone privately recommend Proactiv to me. She was about my age (30s) and I was shocked that she ever suffered from acne. Her skin was flawless. So I decided to visit a spa. Surely they would be able to help me get flawless skin. Well, I stuck with it from June to November and unfortunately, my acne got worse. When I looked in the mirror one day and said to myself, my face has never looked this bad, I made a decision to go back to Proactiv. Once ordered, I was visiting my girlfriend and happened to notice her skin was much more polished of late. When I asked her what she was using, to my shock, she said Proactiv. I was sure I made the right decision then. I have to say, I learned a great deal from the spa. This helped me stick with Proactiv. It is extremely important to follow the directions carefully. I started to see some results immediately but didn't feel it was worthy of 5 stars until at least 2 months later. One of the biggest mistakes is not "hardening" the skin to the BP, as acne.org teaches so well. Also not using moisturizer is another common error. The spa also taught me that hair removal causes breakouts. The second time I gave up Proactiv (mentioned earlier) was exactly because of this and I had thought Proactiv was no longer working. I had taken an epilator to my face and got the worst breakouts of my life. Now, I'm sure that using the same concept with other brands will work too. I've already considered over-the-counter replacements but am enjoying seeing my skin clear up too much to give it up yet and risk a new product not working. I've still got scars that I'm slowly watching fade. Lastly, some disclaimers: I am eating a mostly paleo diet. My acne is hormonal. I'm in my late 30s. I've been on Proactiv for 4 months. I am not associated with Proactiv at all.

Worst product ever
Ive had the worst acne since I was 13 years of age. I started to look up different types of acne products and I came across this one. I bought this and it came with the 3 regimen products. I used the products correctly by following the instructions by doing it night and morning. After a week I noticed I was getting acne on different parts of my face that I never got before. I was so dissapointed and frustrated that I was getting acne all over my cheeks and and my forehead and it was so difficult to get rid of. In my experience of using this product it didn't work and it gave me more acne than needed. I strongly do not reccomend this product unless it has worked for you.

Product used: The Regimen
Something is finally working!
It has been such a horrible experience trying to find something to get rid of my acne. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon an acne.org success story on YouTube. This stuff is really good and if you follow it closely you will for sure start seeing a difference in your skin after a month. My skin was starting to get SUPER dry because I was trying to get a finger's worth of BP like the instructions say but I had to cut back and only do a little less than half in the day time and half of the BP in the night time. I used a honey and avocado mask to get rid of the dry patches and it worked. I use the Neutrogena clear faces spf and use the Mario Badescu healing and soothing mask at night. I'm just really happy about this product and glad I don't have to keep searching.

STAY AWAY
I've always had acne, when I was around 15 it was at it's worst, but I didn't start any treatments for it till I was 18ish... First I tried Clindamycin Aqueous lotion which was amazing for a while - I applied once in the morning and once in the evening, my skin was crystal clear and my breakouts consisted of maybe 2 spots - loved it -then it just stopped working. I then tried Lymacyclin which just made it so much worse - I got spots in places I never had them - just awful, and later I tried Oxytetracycline (didn't do much) and now i'm on doxycycline which is ok - works on my face but not my back. But before I went onto Oxytetracycline i was given Acneside Cream..... THIS STUFF IS EVIL! I used it for maybe two evenings and then woke up on the third day with severe facial swelling (twice the size). Started taking anti-inflammatories and whatnot, changed all my bedsheets and washed everything so I didn't have any trace of it anywhere but woke on the fourth day and my face had doubled again (I could barely open my eye, they were nearly swollen shut)... Had to go to A&E and was given steroids, stronger anti-inflamattories and was put on watch, etc....and I had a rash that had spread all the way down my back and arms (in places I hadn't even used the cream). The swelling didn't go down for over a week, and basically gave me a chemical peel. My skin was so dry, to the point that if I pulled my face into a frown the skin from under my eyes would stretch (think movie The Mummy style) - and I couldn't put anything on it to help with the peeling as it was way to sensitive, even chamomile lotion, the gentlest thing ever, sent it bright red and burning. (Acneside is so nasty that when I rubbed the excess cream, which wasn't much, onto my chocolate brown towel it bleached it... that and my pillow case). So yeh, I wouldn't recommend this at all - something that bleaches things that severely shouldn't be used on ya face!

Unfortunately a lot of the products mentioned that you have used are antibiotics. It's very common, especially with topical antibiotics, for resistance to the drugs to arise and therefore the effects on the bacteria (P. acnes) are hugely reduced. This will explain why Clindamycin stopped working for you, plus proper prescriptions will state that you can only use it up to around 3 months anyway for this exact reason. It's unfortunate how you reacted to Acnecide but antibiotic treatments can't be used long term. I hope you find something that works for you without giving such a bad reaction.

stay away!
I did became addictive to proactiv,I started using it around the year,1995,,right up until they messed up with the formula around 2009 ,but I wasn't notified until after 2011 ,look on the web ,they had a recall for the cleansers and the treatment except the toner , so if proactiv before that recall used to send me for a visit to the dermatologist every now and then ,imagine what it did after, when their products weren't working and ended up with cystic acne plus probably a flare up of seborrheic dermatitis when their products had nothing on them ,apparently their products weren't made with enough good formula to work ,huh? I called them and complain and offered me the extra strength formula which as stupid me took the bait and ,I bought ,well ,too late ,back to the dermatologist ,who gave me retin a ,huh ? I think I should have taken the Accutane, hummm well ,too old for that ,I think my liver can't take it. So ,proactiv went and changed their formula after the recall, coincidence.,,? I doubt that. So ,let me tell you ,I think the reason proactiv kept failing cause they don't care to check on their formula ,sometimes it could be almost perfect ,others a wreck on your face . My daughter used it for about 6 years ,I will be honest to you ,it did worked on her right up until the recall ,when ,she asked whatever happened to proactiv, did they change the formula or what, well I asked the same question ,??? What the ....you know what . My daughter didn't really had acne ,just the occasional zit ,proactiv made her skin too oily .but can't lie to you again ,no zits ,well right up until she decided she needed make-up ,..sad. Well I do speak for myself ,I was a proactiv slave ,dealing with their messed products and messed up services all the time . I was really very misinformed,I didn't know what to use or didn't read enough, now we have Google ,yeah. Ok ,the basics ,back to what matters, does proactiv work ,well it really did ,back in the day when they started and probably 4 years after ,then after that they didn't care if their formula was being formulated up to their good standards. So that is my view ,you are better off using an over the counter cleanser ,toner and me and my daughters favourite favourite now ,the acne.org treatment ,please Daniel kern ,always check on your products.

I need help!
I used this for a week and my skin broke out like crazy, it was awful. Stopped using it as I have sensitive skin and didn't know if I would be allergic like I am to other acne treating products. What do I do? Is this normal? Should I carry on?

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
