I use this everyday in addition to a moisturizer and it absolutely works! It's the only OTC product that has done anything for me.

Pros:

It made me believe that celebrities get paid to say anything!

Cons:

Dried out my skin, but I still had acne. Weird! The more I used it my skin started to get a rash from it.

Once I hit puberty my body said FU and my face looked like a PIZZA! YUCK! My parents took me to see a dermatologist and when that got expensive we bought Pro Active off QVC before it got all popular. I used the whole product and it sucked a$$! It dried out my face and I still had acne. About a week into it, my face started to get a rash. I heard an ad on the radio for Loma Lux Acne. I had my mom buy it for me and it really worked! I saw results in days! I used it that whole summer and when I started 7th grade no one recognized me! ILOVE LOVE LOVE this product! Loma Lux is worth the money. I am 25 now and I have great skin!

Pros:

It seems to be working, affordable-no harsh smell.

Cons:

Some itching/burning around my mouth. My eye was swollen on day 2 of use.

It seems to be working and nothing else has. I am using the sensitive line and if I have an irritation again, I will have to discontinue use. I am hoping this is not the case because I can actually see a difference in just 3 days.

Pros:

i really like proactiv, it has always worked with me, and if you stay with it, 2-3 times a day, your skin will look amazing. i've never had problems with clothes, or the color in them...that is a lie.

Cons:

all if it works really well, i have no complaints except if you lick your fingers after you wash your face, its a horrible taste...do not attemp.

awesome product, does wonders for a man.

Pros:

Smoother skin...makes acne go away faster

Cons:

none for me so far

I LOVE Proactive!!! My sister gave me what she had left of hers because I was breaking out REALLY bad. I was skeptical but I tried it...My skin feels so smooth and my acne IS going away. After the first 2 days,I could already notice the pimples getting smaller, the redness was going away and they didn't hurt as bad. I stopped using it for a while and my acne started coming back along my chin (where I ALWAYS get them),my birthday is coming up in a few days and I wanted to look good so I started using it once again...It's been about a week now and it's no longer noticeable. I have no problems with this product like the others. My skin has not dried out and I've never had any problems with it "ruining my clothes" I WOULD recommend this product...and I have :)

Pros:

None.

Cons:

It dries out your skin like crazy and it forms more pimples.

I used this product for months thinking it would clear up my acne. What a waste of time and money. It dried out my skin like crazy almost cracking it. Despite the use of the "moisturizer", I continued to dry up and form more acne. This product line uses too much BP in it. Overall, I wouldn't suggest using this product if you have sensitive skin. It claims to be for all skin types but I disagree.

Pros:

Simply works... If used correctly it is very effective and most importantly for me, it only needs to be used once a day and that is awesome considering I barely have time.

Cons:

I still get a pimple here and there, but who cares. they aren't noticeable. There is NO product that will permanently get rid of all acne 100000% and that is a fact. But for me, this product came very close to 100000%.

Great, give it a try, most likely will work for you.

Pros:

I used Proactiv for about a year, and it worked OK for me; still the occasional breakout and it didn't do much for my blackheads.

Cons:

However, it was recently brought to my attention that Proactiv face wash (and many other exfoliating cleansers) contain POLYETHYLENE BEADS (that's plastic, folks!) which are polluting our water systems and oceans.

I used Proactiv for about a year, before it was brought to my attention that the "microbeads" in the face wash are polyethylene. The plasic beads used as the exfoliant in the Proactiv face wash don't disintegrate with time. They are ingested by fish, birds, shellfish, and other marine life. It is unknown how long it takes for those microplastic beads to leave the bodies of those animals, or if they do at all. If you eat fish, shellfish, or care at all about our marine ecosystem (which provides us with most of the oxygen we breathe), find yourself an all natural cleanser WITHOUT POLYETHYLENE in it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
