Acne.org’s Real World Take
This topical retinoid medication provides partial relief at higher prescription dosages, but don’t look for complete clearing. Relatively affordable and comes with less side effects than tretinoin, the other affordable topical retinoid. As a bonus, it improves the look of skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles a bit too.

Pros:

-Works wonders
-Lasts long
-Makes skin soft

Cons:

-Pricey
-Works after 2/3 weeks

I've been using this for about a month now. It didn't work for about 2-3 weeks but now it works and I'm amazed. My face is so clear and it helps fade previous acne scars. I've been getting compliments on my skin which is definitely a plus! I wash my face at night with Cetaphil, after I put Oxy pads on it with a Neutrogena toner. About 30 mins later I apply this gel on my spots and go to bed. I wake up to what use to be a big pimple, to a tiny pimple. Amazing stuff! I recommend this.

Pros:

Completely got rid of my acne. I had pretty moderate acne and from time to time got a cyst. After using this product for around 5-6 months all my acne was gone. I was lucky and did not get dry, or have an initial breakout.

Cons:

Costs alot without plan
Takes along time to work (5-6 months for me)
After I stopped taking it my acne came back really bad

I would recommend it aslong as you keep going with it and don't give up.

Pros:

Really Works
Makes Skin Soft
Seems To Get Rid of Red Scars
Worked Fast

Cons:

Kind of Expensive

I have been suffering from acne since I was about 16. At 25, I find it more embarassing than I did back then! When I was 16, I went to the dermatologist and he prescribed some benzoyl peroxide and some pills. The benonzyl peroxide dried out my skin so bad but I stuck with it for a couple months. The peeling only got worse and the pills made me sick so I stopped. After that, I was kind of hesistant to go back to the derm. Finally, a year ago, I went and the doctor prescribed me differin and clindamycin. The doctor seemed really confident that it would work and it did! Before I starting using differin, my skin was really dry from all the products I was trying--after, my skin is soft and I don't have dry skin at all From the time that I started using this regimine, I didn't get any pimples for a month, and then I only got one. I used to have whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, everything. Whiteheads were always the worst because who wants pus on their face? I haven't gotten one whitehead since I started using these meds! Even on the meds, I still get cysts every once and a while, but it's only one or two at a time and they go away a lot quicker than before. When I do get one, it's very easy to cover up. I know that some of the people on here have said that they only use the differin when they see spots but I use the .1% and use it all over my face. I have been lucky and haven't had some of the side effects that some other people have had. One thing to remember is it does make you skin very sensitive. Before starting using differin, I really never wore sunscreen (bad I know), but now I make sure to use moisturizer with sunscreen every morning. It is kind of inconvenient in spring/summer because I would like to get a tan, but can't.

Pros:

works to clear up blemishes with in a few days

Cons:

can be pricey if you don't have prescription coverage

I have been using differein .1% for about 5 years and for me it works great. I quit using it for a few months and my skin flared up, as soon as I started using differin again, my skin cleared up within a week. Overall, I love it. I have oily skin so it doesn't dry my skin out too much. I have used both the cream and the gel formulas, I prefer the gel.

Pros:

Cleared up all acne
made red marks fade faster
no scent

Cons:

zero.

So this is how differin worked for me. I was hesitant to try it at first after reading all the reviews about how it destroyed the faces of so many. I had moderate acne with cysts, blackheads, whiteheads, you name it. So I started on Duac and used it both at night and in the morning. This cleared most if not all of my acne up within two months. About a year later I began to get more and more clogged pores and whiteheads, so I decided what the hell i might as well try it. The first week it brought out an extra maybe four or five little red bumps which dissapeared within three days, after that I haven't had a single zit and it's four months later. The bottom line is try it. It worked wonders for me so it might for you as well.

Pros:

I don't really have acne but whenever i get pimples it DOES go away right away. My sister did have severe acne and this product was the only thing that worked on her as well.

Cons:

none.

USE A LITTLE BIT! If you put a blob thinking its gonna work faster, it does the complete opposite. It doesnt work that way. Just use a little bit where needed.

Pros:

Clear skin :D

Cons:

I have heard it is quite expensive if you don't have a medical plan to cover some of the cost.
Slight stinging when first start using the cream.

I starting using this at the same time I started using Alesse (birthcontrol) since both were supposed to help acne and my face broke out quite badly. I stopped taking the alesse 2 weeks ago and have continued with the differin. I have already noticed a huge improvment! My skin is essentially clear. Great product.

Pros:

Differn works if you constantly use it. It also makes your skin very soft:)

Cons:

The first month your very very sensitive to the sun and light such as lamps. NEVER PUT DIFFERIN ON WHEN YOU ARE SUNBUNED IT STINGS VERY BAD!

IT WORKS!!! Some spot treatments to get the acne to heal they dry your skin out and make it so it kind "peels off" but Differin just keeps minimizing the acne until theres nothing left except beautilful soft skin. I have had acne for about 2yrs and i have used Proactive, My Chelle, Clean and Clear products, Olay products..... NOTHING worked exept Differin. I have very sensitive skin and Differin did not irritate it like everything else that i tried. TRY IT!!! :D

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
