Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

I hate this oil!
When I read how people rave on TTo, I thought that I should give it a try. I bought a bottle and diluted it with some essential oils. Unfortunately, TTO doesnt agree with my skin. I developed tiny spots all around my pimples and places where I never got pimple before. My face was almost clear until I tried this. It has been a regret since using tto. To people out there, dont believe everything what the netizens hyped about.

I used to have okay skin, but after I started using this, I developed painful cysts on my cheeks and jawline.

Try this but for atleast a month ok.... drink a glass of water with organic apple cider vinegar 2tbs morning and night, get a clarasonic facial brush and Mario badescu glycolic foaming facial cleanser (ulta), organic coconut oil, and 100% organic tea tree oil. Make sure you eso your makeup off every night. 1. Oil cleanse- rub coconut oil all over your face to remove makeup and the wash off soap. 2. Use the spin brush with the foaming cleanser. 3. Moisturize with coconut oil and 3-5 drops tea tree oil 4. Spot treat pure tea tree oil every night as keep your hair clean so you don't get pimples around you hair line

Pros:

none

Cons:

Made me break out worse than I ever have in my life

I tried this for a week instead of BP. I diluted it with grape seed oil, which doesn't clog pores. For the week I used it, my skin looked nice, no redness or anything, and only a couple zits as usual. But after a week started developing little bumps all over my entire face. It looks like every single pore got clogged and inflamed. I switched back to the normal regimen, but the bumps still have not gone away. I look like a monster. I even had to call in sick for work because I am so embarrassed. I HIGHLY recommend you test this product on a small patch of your face for at least a week before using.

Broke me out
I made the mistake of using this as a spot treatment & later all over my face (diluted in another oil) a few months ago. Broke me out in painful cysts on the chin, jaw, cheek & even at the side of my brows (near my forehead) & I never break out there. I hated this thing.

Severe acne: Don't use
If you have moderate to severe acne, or in my case, cystic acne, don't waste your money. The first few days I tried it, it maybe dried my acne up a little, but only the surface. It does not get deep down like I need it to. I will continue to use it as temporary relief because it slightly reduces redness.

Pros:

There are some, as mentioned in other posts.

Cons:

Burning the skin itself (like sunburn or chemical burn), worse acne.

I used Tea Tree Oil for a few weeks and, at first it was my wonder product, then it was not. The oil burnt my face, leaving it red and inflamed. My acne, which was under control and nearly gone, practically exploded. I got cysts, pimples, redness...everything. It was awful and it was really difficult to manage. I went to a dermatologist a month or so later. My acne had been mild, it was now moderatly severe. Now, this breakout had practically made me a hermit. It was the last straw and I got fairly depressed, dysmorphic and anti-social. It affected me and my family. My dermatologist said to NEVER USE TEA TREE OIL because it will mess your skin up; now and/or in the long run. My verdict is: The risk is not worth it. I'm still getting over the nodules that the tea tree caused. Now, go to your doctor and listen to what they say. Go to a dermatologist and listen to what they have to say. At the end of the day though, its up to you, your skin and how you react. Cheers.

Pros:

-When diluted properly without oil, it can help reduce swelling and help heal blemishes faster.
-Fairly cheap
-Natural

Cons:

-Warning: If you are suddenly getting random breakouts, and in places you usually do not breakout, consider when you started using this oil. It is an OIL, afterall, and apparently it WILL clog pores if undiluted.
I thought I was diluting it with water, but apparently it is not water soluble.
-Very strong scent

-This had confused the heck out of me... I've used tea tree oil for years, but NEVER the straight oil. Tea tree oil I've used were always from another product that had small percentages of it. I tried the pure oil this time, and diluted it with just a bit of water. I've been noticing constant breakouts on areas where I applied this. The areas were also much oiler. I never had suspected that it was tea tree oil because I've used this for so long in other products. Be aware! I've read many people have broken out from using Tea tree oil, and that it DOES clog pores (even stated by manufacturers.

Pros:

heals poped pimples fast

Cons:

casues a lot of new acne to form in usual places...for example my forehead and near the top of my hair line.

I tried TTO oil for about 3 weeks and by the end of the 3rd week my face was by far worst than I started. My doctor said stop and use a Dove unscented soap bar and only wash twice a day....my face is actually clearing up. I would not recommend TTO for acne.

:( Didn't work
Sadly gave a try with 100% tea tree oil many times as I heard countless of reviews on how good it actually is. I use it to spot treat my cystic acne/blemishes but it always seem to make it worst. I have even tried to apply it directly on them and also diluted it, half TTO and half water but it just didn't seem to work for me. I always try to use it for at least 3 weeks to see how it goes because there might be a "purging" period. But even so, just doesn't work for me. Somehow when I use it, acne starts popping out in areas near the places I spot treat. I stopped it to see if that was the cause and found out my face seemed calmer after.

Try Rosemary oil instead. Tea tree might be too harsh for your skin even with it being diluted. Rosemary has similar anti-inflammatory properties, however, dilute it with another oil like jojoba oil.
