Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

There are some, as mentioned in other posts.

Cons:

Burning the skin itself (like sunburn or chemical burn), worse acne.

I used Tea Tree Oil for a few weeks and, at first it was my wonder product, then it was not. The oil burnt my face, leaving it red and inflamed. My acne, which was under control and nearly gone, practically exploded. I got cysts, pimples, redness...everything. It was awful and it was really difficult to manage. I went to a dermatologist a month or so later. My acne had been mild, it was now moderatly severe. Now, this breakout had practically made me a hermit. It was the last straw and I got fairly depressed, dysmorphic and anti-social. It affected me and my family. My dermatologist said to NEVER USE TEA TREE OIL because it will mess your skin up; now and/or in the long run. My verdict is: The risk is not worth it. I'm still getting over the nodules that the tea tree caused. Now, go to your doctor and listen to what they say. Go to a dermatologist and listen to what they have to say. At the end of the day though, its up to you, your skin and how you react. Cheers.

Really Does Work
I'm not one to write reviews on websites ever, but I promised myself that if I found something that works I would share it in hopes that some of you guys struggling with acne will find it helpful too. I've had mild but persistent acne since puberty, however in the past sixth months my face absolutely exploded. Cystic acne, blackheads, whiteheads, etc. you name it, it's all over my face (specifically my cheeks and chin). About two weeks ago I began using a cotton ball to apply tea tree oil all over my face every morning. I put it on after I moisturize and apply my makeup over it. I have not had one cystic pimple since starting to use TTO, and my skin is smoother than ever. I'm going on Accutane in a couple weeks to help my severe scarring and stubborn blackheads, and I am sad that I will have to part with this holy-grail product. Just when I've found something that works! Be careful with TTO when you first use it, as I've heard that a lot of people are really sensitive to it. I am lucky that it does not irritate my face and I can apply it generously every day. Some people either need to dilute with water or only attend to problem areas when dealing with TTO. Just find what works for your skin sensitivity and give it a shot, it's really worth a try! I recommend it infinitely!

Lauren I would advise you not to take Accutane. Accutane works for your skin but it completely messed up my immune system. Try eating liver once or twice a week and get your thyroid checked. you might be low thyroid and need to supplement. when people supplement thyroid acne clears up very quickly

HANDS DOWN! THE BEST FOR MY BREAKOUTS!
I use the 10% Tea Tree Oil from Australian BodyCare ' and it really does the job for me. I have a lot of acne breakouts all over my face, and I never have completely clear skin ' which is oily ' and i have a lot of red scared or spots from previous breakouts from when I was younger (I'm 21 now and my skin still feels like a teenager's). I dot the TTO with a finger or q-tip on areas with breakouts in the evening after washing my face with Dermalogica's MediBac face wash with salicylic acid. And this help breakout minimize over night SO WELL! It's amazing, cause I have never found anything that worked for me. btw, I do wear foundation, concealer and powder, makeup is a hobby for me. But I see no chance in my breakouts from when I don't wear makeup for a long time. But I also really do what i can to take care of my skin and remove ALL makeup. And I find that Dermalogica's Precleanse is the best thing for it and also says on the back, that it helps on impurities and breakouts. Also I found out that one table spoon of organic coconut oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil ' mixed in a container ' can help cold sores from appearing if you put the mixture on just when you feel the tickle on your lip! In three days it was completely gone and it never developed more that a bit of swollen lip!

I Add it to my cleanser
I have been using tee tree oil for a while now. The more you read up on it, the more you'll learn just how beneficial it is.. I used to just use it alone but now I make a cleanser that is Witch Hazel Grapefruit seed extract Tee Tree Oil Water I put it in a spritz bottle and spray my face as well as my cotton roll and clean my face. Otherwise I wash my face with dr. bronners tea tree oil soap.

Works wonders!
This is an amazing thing! I don't use this particular product I use the one from TBS which is 15% tea tree oil it works as effective as 100% one. I have hormonal acne concentrated around my jawline and a few on my forehead which is mostly whiteheads I got them extracted a few weeks back its kinda clear but still a few pimples. Anyway, TTO will work wonders if you know how to use it! I got mine today. I applied it with a q tip on active pimples anf ones that I felt are going to be huge dirty pimples. And OMG! They reduced! It worked incredibly well on the pimples which are still under the skin. I apply it twice a day and I really saw a noticeable difference. Obviously your pimples/acne won't go away overnight it will take time. But TTO is serious good stuff! Do give it a try. You never know your pimples/acne might reduce or go away in a week! EDIT: its a spot treatment. You are not supposed to apply it all over your face Only on pimples(active ones and the ones you feel are going to become ugly pimples.) DONNOT apply on scars.

TTO
I just began using tea tree oil two days ago. I poured half tea tree oil in the cap it came with along with half vitamin E oil. Just in two days I am very impressed! I don't typically have acne, but I currently have small pimples on my right cheek from not taking my make up off before bed (I had midterms and was tired for an entire week, bad decision!!) I also have small dark spots right on my T-zone area that don't seem to go away. In just 24 hours there has been a drastic reduction of the pimples on my face. I'm excited to go home and wash away the day's dirt and to reapply the oil. However, a slight warning!!! Tea tree oil has a STRONG smell. My bathroom is in the back of my house and I can smell it when I enter my front door, from using it hours before. The smell doesn't bother me much, it does not smell bad. It is just a very STRONG smell. Nevertheless I greatly advise using TTO if you have light acne or the occasional pimple!!

Irritated Skin
I tried Tee Tree Oil as a spot treatment and found it too harsh/concentrated for my sensitive skin. I had one particularly bad experience... I applied it as a spot treatment to one stubborn pimple. I used a q-tip to put a tiny spot of Tee Tree Oil on the blemish and left it on overnight. I woke up to dry, irritated skin near the spot treatment. Perhaps if your skin is not sensitive or dry-prone, give this a shot! Otherwise I would suggest trying something else. (I highly suggest diluting this with water if you are using it for the first time!!!)

Cleared my skin!!

Pros:

clears skin
kills bacteria
help scarring

Cons:

burns near eyes

I am a 19 year old college student and found myself getting acne like I had never before. I got more than a few zits and cystic acne also. I finally purchased tea tree oil and applied it to my zits and it cleared my skin quickly. I then added a few drops into my night cream to combat dryness and my skin has been clear ever since. If I have a terrible breakout, I apply some to my problem areas and it helps so much!

Pros:

reduces pain, redness, inflammation

Cons:

pungent

My skin was currently breaking out pretty badly from new cleansers, so I was praying this would work well. After a shower I dabbed some tea tree oil to my acne spots.. the huge zits around my jaw line, the smaller ones on my chin. No joke, a couple hours later its reduced to a third of the size and the redness has drastically decreased. The acne spots are less painful too. I'm hoping this is the type of situation where you'll learn to love the smell of it when you realize how effective it is.
