Pros:

Cleared up avne on my back and chest, which was only very light to begin with, bigger boobs, no weight gain, no baby!

Cons:

Nausea, only cleared up facial acne very very slightly.

I went on Dianette for birth control and to clear up my acne. I have had acne on my face, back and chest for about 4 years. To start with I hated Dianette. I was taking it at 9pm, and would wake up at 2 or 3am feeling incredibly nauseaous. This continued for about a week. Then I started taking it in the mornings with a meal, because I was losing too much sleep every night! I still felt nauseous in the middle of the day, but this did subside my the time I began my second pack. I liked Dianette then for a few months as it completely cleared up the acne on my back and chest, although I will admit it was not very bad in these areas, and also my boobs had grown a full cup size. I also had no weight gain. The acne on my face had slighty improved but I thought it would just take a bit more time...I waited 9 months but I still had bad facial acne. 10 months later and I have been off Dianette for a month now. The acne on my face, back and chest is now worse than before!!

Pros:

Decrease in facial hair, clearing up of body acne

Cons:

Hasn't cleared up face acne after 10 months

I have taken this for 10 months. During the fist 6 my acne was far worse than ever, after that it just returned to the moderate ance is was before and remains at that. i.e. it hasn't worked. That was for my face. What is strange, though, is that the acne on my back and chest cleared up almost straight away. I have also increased 2 bra sizes on Dianette. I am going to stop it now because It has made me very depressed, so that I am finding it hard to work.

Worked for me but bad side effects
My skin got clear and looked amazing while I was on Dianette. However, I got depressed, had palpitations and prickly feelings all over my body as side effects. My main point in wanting clear skin is to look good and feel good. I got my clear skin but felt awful, so my rating is going to be 3.

Effective in the short term.
I was prescribed this for 6 months at first and my acne disappeared in the second month and did not return until I came off the pill. My acne returned as bad as before in 2 months despite being prescribed microgynon. I was then advised to go back on dianette for 5 months and did so as I was desperate to get rid of my acne again. It went away in the second month but came back after I finished the 5 month course. I am now looking at going on accutane and have been prescribed yasmin. Ultimately, this pill is highly effective at getting rid of acne in the short term but is not by any means a long term solution :( My heart goes out to anyone suffering with acne, I know how hard it is! Good luck and I really hope you find something that works for you! I would recommend this if you are SICK of having acne and want to just have a break from it for a while. Maybe your doctor can prescribe a follow-on pill that would be effective at balancing out your hormones? xxxxx

What happened when you went on Yasmin - was this better at treating your acne than Dianette? Thank you in advance xxx

Pros:

After nine months of use I did see an improvement. My spots were smaller and less red, and i went from always having several spots on my chin/cheekbones/forehead to having one or two on my entire face. I no longer had forehead blemishes, and when I was strict on my skin care it did look pretty darn good.

Cons:

I hated how some days for no apparent reason I would feel very upset and/or depressed. Sometimes before school my family would just have to say one word and then I would start to cry hysterically. It was getting very embarrassing, and I hated that I wasn't as enthusiastic anymore. I hated putting a downer on everyone around me just because I felt sad. This also doesn't fade scarring. And I gained about 10 pounds.

If you're prepared to persevere for several months, you will get results from Dianette. It does work, but for me I just got to the point where I simply had had enough of feeling emotional all the time.

Pros:

cleared skin very significantly (however not completely)
helped regulate periods
bigger boobs
free on the NHS

Cons:

considerable weight gain (i went up a dress size in 6 weeks!)
mood swings/made me quite emotional
acne returned as soon as i stopped taking it

i went on this in combination with trimethoprim last year when i was 16 (after trying countless topical treatments/antibiotics etc) and within 6 weeks my skin was far clearer with mostly just red marks left from previous breakouts and far fewer new spots. however it made me gain a lot of weight (something i wasn't used to as a somewhat underdeveloped teenage girl and came as a shock) and people around me realised it had really affected my mood so i stopped taking it after about 4 months. soon after my acne started reappearing and recently it is worse than ever so i think the next step is trying a course of roaccutane. overall it did make a big difference and its worth a try but the side effects were quite substantial and for me it wasn't a long-term solution.

Pros:

Cleared my skin alot, not noticed any weight gain

Cons:

terrified what will happen when I come off it!,
nausea occasionally, stomach aches, extreme tiredness, emotional

I have been on Dianette now for three years, my skin has improved greatly to what it was before, but still I get the odd few boils on my face and most recently they seem to have increased slightly on my chin. After reading all of these reviews its clear that in 9 out of 10 cases, when coming off the pill acne has got far mor sevre than before. I'm dreading the day I come off the pill, its not fair that when all of my friends around me will have perfect skin and I may look like a spot again. I've only just started to gain some self confidence after years of my face looking like a boil. For some people dianette seems to work well whilst on it but coming off it it all looks down hill, so I would only recommened it for short term use.

Pros:

NONE!!!!!!

Cons:

Ok, so my skin cleared up about 50%, BUT, I put on a LOT of weight after only 3 months, I went up two bra sizes and my breasts were sore all the time. I was getting terrible headaches so decided not to get a repeat prescription.

This pill did not work for me, yes my skin cleared up a bit, but the headaches and weight gain made me feel terrible. I'm going back to the doctor to try something else for my spots. I would NOT recommend Dianette - the side effects are dreadful. I'm angry that the doctor would even put me on this before normal acne treatments, the headaches are horrendous, and a stone in three months is depressing - I wasn't even eating any more than normal!!

Pros:

didn't experience any side effects, just involves taking a pill so easy to do, no complex regimen required.

Cons:

did not work! i used it for years but only because i was not offered anything else that worked either.

worth a try if you are someone who's skin is helped by bcp's / if you think it's hormone related acne, but did not work for me.
