Hey everyone,I have been reading this thread (and other related threads of which I think there are 2 or 3) for a little over a week now. I'm sure like many of you out there, upon first reading this thread I had a lot of hope. However, that hope is slowly diminishing as the success of this treatment isn't being talked about as much and there is no sign of the research done by BRD. However, logically, the ideas of stem cell treatment make a lot of sense.
I have mild to moderate acne scarring on my temples and forehead that I have been trying to clear up for about 8 years now. I've tried chemical peels, cooltouch laser, 1 punch excision and 2 fraxel treatments (with microdermabrasion). I believe (strongly) that the fraxel has damaged my skin as it now has a very rough look to it with enlarged pores and fine lines.
I have come to the realization that perfect skin may not be in the cards for me and I'm really ok with that. I would just like my normal texture with some of the more prominent scars being softened. Thus, I have put some faith in stem cell therapy.
I live in Los Angeles so going to London to see Dr. Khan is not out of the realm of possibility but would be very difficult to say the least. I thought about seeing some of the Dr.'s mention here in Los Angeles (Newman and Calabria), but am somewhat hesitant after reading some negative reviews for both of them.
I really don't know what to do at this point because I don't want to rush into a rash decision but I would also like to move on with my life and put the thought of acne scarring behind me.

It is more than likely that the chemical peels caused those side effects. I have never heard of any type of fraxel causing that. It is however a common complaint of chemical peels.
I'm pretty sure it was the fraxel. I had the chemical peel done around 2001 and there were no visible side effects after the peel. I had the fraxel done in 2006 and have seen a change in my skin since then. There are various websites dedicated to the damage caused by fraxel. Either way, my skin has been damaged and I'm looking for a way to improve it.

Hi, Fraxel damaged my skin as well. I have been considering going to Nathan Newman and Calabria. Could you tell me what negative reviews you have found on them, especially Newman.
Hey Prague,
I have read some of your posts and I think we are in similar boats so to speak. I know we are both considering this stem cell treatment to correct some fraxel damage but we are both located in the US so going to Dr. Khan would be rather difficult. Where are you located exactly?
As for the negative reviews, I have not heard anything firsthand from a patient of either doctor. But, if you just do a google search with something like "Dr. Nathan Newman reviews," it will show you various websites that review doctors like vitals and ratemds.
For Dr. Newman, I found one person complaining about a botched botox injection, another just generally complaining about a horrible experience and another complaining about the removal of a lump on their forehead. To be fair, there are also some very positive reviews of Dr. Newman.
For Dr. Calabria, there are more negative reviews than positive. From reading the reviews, I get the impression that Dr. Calabria is your stereotypical plastic surgeon. On balance, I would probably talk to Dr. Newman before seeing Dr. Calabria.
One of the main reasons I would even consider going to see Dr. Khan would be because he sounds pretty genuine and seems to actually care about getting results for his patients. Even with the person who isn't having results, Dr. Khan seems to be trying his best to help this person out.
What procedures are you considering and what do you think would help? When do you think you might see Dr. Newman? If you do go in for a consultation, please keep me informed on how it goes and what he thinks. If I even go in to see him, I will be sure to do the same.
Hey jamesj, I wanted to ask you about the fraxel treatment. Was is re:store? Did you have any prolonged erythema? (longlasting redness)I too developed some scarred pores right after a fractionated laser. Not sure about the lines though, that sounds odd.
Hey Ziko,
To be perfectly honest I don't know which fraxel treatment it was. My first treatment was in October 2006 and the second was in November 2006. I don't think it was the re:store as I do not believe that that version of fraxel was out at the time. I could be wrong though. There was no blue dye used either so I dont think it was the first version of fraxel.
I didn't have any long lasting redness from the treatment. Redness right after treatment which turned in to bronzing and went away in a few days. Some swelling which also went away in a few days. When I had the treatment, everything seemed fine but after a few years it seems like my skin has developed a rough looking texture. It's kind of weird. Don't know if this has happened to anyone else.

Hey james,
If the texture thing happened a few years after fraxel I highly doubt it was because of the fraxel, I just dont see how that's possible. Also, it was re:store (re:pair wasnt out yet), which is suppose to be fairly mild.

Laser damage can and does come out later. i didn't notice my damage until 1 year out. Do a search for laser damage and support forum. There are thousands of people that have been damaged by lasers. My skin texture is ruined. My upper lip was not done so the proof is on my face. The skin on my upper lip is normal and healthy and I worry every day about the skin on the rest of my face.

I am on the east coast so it is far for me. I will let you know if I make it out there for a consultation and please do the same. Is Calabria claiming to help with scars? He doesn't have the cytori stem cell device that Khan has here in the US. It hasn't been approved yet. Newman has his own stem cell technique that he claims can help with scarring.
James and Prague it's true what you guys are talking about the laser damage after years, because that happened to me with the dermabration, I had a dermabration done 2 years ago and I started to see a lot of deep linear scarring after the year and a half. So I just called the dr for complain about it and he told me that if the dermabration would leave a scar it supposed to happen right away and not after over a year, he pissed me off because why he didn't told me at the begining that I was going to get more chance and risk to get 10 time more scarring and linear scarring than how I was before dermabration. What I belive is that maybe the reason why is that at the beginning when you have a procedure done the face are more tight and then afterward about a year later you start to loose some tightness.
Regarding the stem cell I've been doing research and call phone and for what I have being reading theres a few different stem cell, I have interest with the recell, the one that is taking a small sample of skin (biopsy) is collected from an area close to the skin you want to treat usually is taken behind the ear.
That ensures the treated area has the same texture and colour as the surrounding skin. Then they do the laser and spray the face and also the dr spray the area where the biopsy is taken.
I think that my skin problem is more about to treat the shiny scarring that I have left after a laser procedure (malpractice), some part of my face was burned. My scarring are pretty much level up with the surrounding skin alredy, but I still have a lot of linear deep scarring from dermabration, but also what really bother me a lot is the freaking shiny scarring that has a waxy texture.
I've read that recell help a lot for scars from burn like my case and also for the rest of the others scarring. I think shiny scar and scar from burn are the more difficult to cure or treat.
I been trying to reach dr Khan but it seem to be mission impossible, I sended to him an email around 4 month ago I recently talked to him and he told me that he was going to call me back and I still waiting.
I just been looking around other dr and I have found some dr in Australia that perform recell. Wonder if somebody know about dr. Fiona Wood from Australia the dr that invented & created the stem cell?

I began using Retin-A one year after my laser tx. and this is when I noticed my scarring. I feel my skin wasn't strong enough after the laser to handle the Retin-A. Is this what you think happened to you? What country are you in? I don't know much about recell.

I had a laser done only for red marks first and it left me a lot of scarring box scars and rolling scars, I had a malpractice so the dr that do this to me told me that those scarring will go away with a dermabration so I'm so stupid that I trusted him. So I had the dermabration and after the year and half from dermabration I started to notice a lot of new deep line scarring. I think that the reason why doesn't show up right away is because at first your face is tight and then after years you star to loose tightess and also dermabration is a very aggresive procedure. I don't think that retin a cause damage to the skin just make sure to wear spf at least minimum 30.
I live in Florida.

Question:
This may not be the most appropriate forum to ask this in but I figure there are a lot of knowledgeable people who follow this thread who may be able to help.
Has anyone tried a Selphyl filler for their skin? If so, what was their experience and what kind of results did they have. If not, have you heard anything about it.
Thanks in advance.

I have heard of Selphyl. It uses your own blood. I'm not sure if anything is added to the blood. It is new to market so I think it would be best to wait a while before trying. No reason to be one of the first.
Found this an interesting read. Don't know how pertinent it is to the situation we are suffering.

Also, would love to hear where and what BRD is thinking regarding all of this. If anyone can contact him, I'm sure many people would love to hear from him.
the day people fully understand DNA will be the day we can treat almost any skin problem, When your being developed in the fetus the DNA tells the skin to form. Then the DNA code becomes inactive after that point, seperate DNA is what controls the functions of healing which only generates cells to be sufficent for survival. If you were able to trick the body into thinking its in its fetal stage being developed you could in theory generate totaly new skin instead of repairing damaged skin.
