i have a question, this may sound really stupid but ... sicne the stem cells are taken from fat does it mean that the more fat you have the more stem cells you have. ive noticed that fat people tend to have better skin then people who are very underweight like myself.
theres a topic here about that.

Hey,
There is no such thing as a stupid question. Always feel free to ask questions and never worry about what somebody is going to think. I am happy that you are thinking about this subject matter. So keep it up and worry not. Perhaps you'll even figure something out that puzzles the "experts"... One never knows.
Sometimes the person who is not educated in a particular field can come up with the most innovative solutions that revolutionize that very field, because they see things differently... In a way those who've been formally trained in biology, dermatology, etc tend to view the world in a narrow band of tremendous informational focus and depth, the way one normally sees the world through a pair of binoculars or a microscope. While this allows researchers to see things in more detail it also limits their peripheral vision, which itself can make them miss the big picture.
Anyway, fat is a kind of storage matrix for mesenchymal stem cells, therefore people with more adipose tissue should have more stem cells stored in this particular fashion. However I don't have any academic information on the matter... In a way you have me intrigued and I'm simply answering with an educated guess, but not with total certainty. I am going to try and find out about whether or not there are statistically significant stem cell concentration differences in the adipose tissue of a lean person vs a bigger person... 🙂
Anyway, the body is constantly producing stem cells, some of which are flowing through your arteries as you read this. Thus you will never run out of them, although you will be making less stem cells as you get older. The peak stem cell production is in childhood... Too bad for us... 🙁
hey, thanks for the reply BRD. anyway the reason i was asking this is becuase i am extremely underweight ( im 6ft tall and weigh a tiny 110lbs - BMI = 14.9 !) and i do not have good skin for my age (just turned 20) in terms of general texture, smoothness, dry skin etc. Maby these would improve if i were to get to my correct weight which would be around 165 lbs.
personally ive noticed that people who are overweight slightly generally have better skin then those who are underweight (not acne though).
anyway im off to gain 50 lbs lol

Good idea. I think you are difinitely underweight and you must do your best to put a significant amount of weight. I think this will definitely improve the look of your skin.

Cool !
Hi BRD,
I have a few questions. I'm curious as to how much you know about the use of Isolagen in treating acne scars and how you think the results from stem cell treatments compare. From what I've gathered about Isolagen, the results have seemed fair, but not outstanding, and I was just wondering what you think.
It appears that there is a clinic in Vancouver, BC Canada, the Moonsang Choi Clinic, using PRP for wrinkles and wound repair: http://mcmedgroup.com/services.html
The Clinic does offer acne scar repair, but PRP is not listed as a treatment option. Perhaps Dr. Choi can be persuaded to try it.
Hey,
Did you read his website? He does use PRP for acne scars.
"MC Acne Scar Therapy is one of our signature procedures developed by Dr. Choi. MC Acne Scar Therapy is a
truly bio-friendly approach to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
What is the procedure like?
A small amount of blood is taken from the patient to produce platelet rich plasma (PRP). Upon activation, PRP
is applied to the skin with acne scar with Mi-RollA System. In addition deeper acne scars are individually
injected with a fine needle to correct the appearance.
a How does it work?
Mi-RollA System creates microscopic channels that allow PRP to penetrate deep into the skin affected by
acne scars. PRP stimulates proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes creating new skin. Mi-RollA System
also breaks up abnormal fibers that contribute to the unevenness of skin. In addition, Dr. Choi may decide to
inject deeper scars with PRP. As the needle is being withdrawn, it can be manipulated to break up abnormal
fibers that may contribute to scar appearance.
In addition to correcting acne scars, the procedure also enhances the texture and vitality of your skin by
creating new blood vessels. Newly created vessels provide vital nutrients to the skin to maintain healthy skin.
a Is the treatment painful?
The procedure is simple and convenient with minor discomfort. Our clinic uses an air chiller that cools the
skin before, during and after treatment, making the treatment tolerable to most patients. For sensitive
individuals, sedative can be given to make the treatment comfortable. Most patients describe the treatment as
having a mild sunburn sensation.
a How long is the recovery time?
Typically, there is little to no down time associated with the treatment. Some redness of the treated area may
last a few days after treatment. Make-up can be applied the next day.
a How many treatments do I need?
Acne scars look better within days following single treatment. Severe acne scarring may need up to 5
treatments.
a How long is the treatment?
On the treatment day, the entire visit lasts about 90 minutes. The actual procedure requires about 20 minutes."

Excellent. I can't believe I missed that.
Perhaps Dr. Choi would be open to discussing the possibility of augmenting the platelet rich plasma by adding small quantities of specific proteins that BRD has previously mentioned, namely TGF-B3, Thymosin B4, Fetuin-A, and Laminin 511. This would surely help maximize results and possibly even reduce the number of treatments required.

Just spoke with Dr. Choi. I asked him about adding those proteins to the PRP and he said that he would be open to speaking with BRD to learn more about how they would help to acheive scar free healing.
I also asked if he would consider using MSC's for scars and he said that he would have to be convinced that there would be a large number of patients willing to undergo such treatment before he partners with a cosmetic surgeon and invests in the technology to extract and culture the cells.
TOBD:
Thank you for posting this GREAT info!
Though I don't know much about this procedure, but I definately know that it's a matter of fact that stem cells can be cultured and be replicated even outside of the human body. This is basically how cloning works but of course cloning is a much more complicated thing!
I' just did some search online for the procedure. I'm so glad that I found Beijing has a clinic that does it...cuz I might going there this Spring!!! Unfortunately they don't have english site....
SO¯¼´o BD¯¼Å¡here's the picture the clinic the clinic 's website showing the dr. who currently perfroms the surgy in the World.....is it consistent with what you know? I wanna know if the Clinic is acutally authentic!
Thanks again!
I forgot to mention:
Dr. Choi (at the MC clinic here in Vancouver) is open-minded, very kind and helpful... unlike the majority of cosmetic surgeon or dermatologists I know. I had a long and free consultation with him and he answered all my questions with respect and enthusiasm.
I would recommend all interested in PRP treatment in North America (but could not find it locally) to contact him to inquire more.
If anyone wants to come to Vancouver for treatment, I can assist in logistics such as finding inexpensive lodging etc.
Wow, amazing information, 2012!!P.S. I'm sending you an email, so take a look when ya can! : )
Thanks for the kind remark, holdontohope.
While BRD is certainly the inspiration, information and 'answer' central on the forum, I, on the other hand, am like the miss "question" central here with my endless questions...
Sorry for the long questions, everyone. I do hope these questions and their answers will benefit others as well.
Sydney also offers PRP!!!! Looks as if this is catching on. However, please note, it says "may not work for severe scarring" : (. But still this is a positive step!
The latest in anti-ageing FACIAL and BODY REJUVENATION WITH YOUR OWN CELLS using PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)
Face Today Medi-Clinic is proud to be one of the first two clinics in Australia in the Cosmetic arena chosen to launch PRP. Nicole Bell Founder of Face Today Medi-Clinic will be demonstrating at the first workshop in Sydney on Feb 7, 2009. The formal presentation and launch will be at the Cosmetic Surgery Conference in Sydney in May where Nicole will demonstrate at workshops for PRP. Dr Bruce Williamson will be delivering the science of PRP in the Plenary sessions. Face Today in Cairns and Sydney has been using this science for over six months with incredible results.
Why should we have Regenerative Medicine known as PRP?
Aging of the skin, dermal components and cells, means that the skin texture and appearance deteriorate. Aging affects the hands, soft tissue of the face and body. This is characterized by sagging, thinning of the skin, puffiness, age spots (lentigines) and wrinkling (forehead, cheeks, neck and dAcolletA). Tissue on the arms becomes thin and empty. General texture of the skin changes and dryness is a problem. Sun exposure worsens the process by solar-aging and UV irradiation.
This means that vertical and horizontal facial wrinkles and body texture deteriorate with time.
Some people, of both genders, choose to age gracefully and are not concerned about eventually POSSIBLY looking like their grand-parents in years to come. However, there are choices, in this new era of anti-aging medicine. The trend now is to turn back the clock and undergo some form of rejuvenation to reduce facial wrinkles, lines and blemishes and rejuvenate the body.
A new approach appealing to clients seeking an increased and natural method to rejuvenation. This is regeneration with your own cells and more specifically, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This is also referred to as autologous cellular regeneration (ACR) an aesthetic practice, which is a safe and tolerable procedure. Used in combination therapy it can potentiate the results of your other anti ageing modalities.
REGENERATIVE MEDICINE is the production and injection of autologous
platelet rich plasma.
It is well known that platelets have many functions. Platelets contain important growth factors that, when secreted, are responsible for:
Tissue regeneration and rejuvenation
increasing collagen production
recruiting other cells to the site of injury
initiating vascular in a growth
inducing cell differentiation
bone a mineralization
extra cellular matrix formation
Non a Allergenic
It is a abody owna physiological product vs. animal derived or human donor products.
Elimination of donor transmissible infections
Biological Glue: for tissue adhesion especially in skin flaps, bone grafts and trauma.
These are vital steps in collagen regeneration and wound healing.
What does the procedure involve?
SAFE and Physiologically Active
Preparation is Simple and Quick, and completed on the Physicians premises in the appointment time. No products are sent off premises.
Can be used in multiple areas for dermal rejuvenation
Prior to treatment a blood sample of 10 a 20 mls is extracted from the patient. This blood is immediately placed in the centrifuge for 5 a 8 minutes. When centrifugation is complete your Plasma will be separated into three layers: (1) platelet a poor plasma, ( 2) red blood cells , and (3) the abuffy coata ( i.e. platelets and white blood cells) from your red blood cells. The rich platelets are extracted from the base of the plasma gel. The platelets are injected into the deep dermis or fat layer of the skin. Platelets gradually increase collagen which can increase skin thickness and overall health of the skin.
How long is the procedure from start to finish?
Approx 45mins to 1 hour per two test tubes.
Which facial and body areas can be treated?
Around the eyes a Peri Orbital Rim
Cheeks and Mid face
Cheeks
Thinning skin on the neck
Jaw Line and Sub Malar
Back of hands
DAcolletage
Other Body Areas
What is the process of facial rejuvenation by ACR- PRP?
Your practitioner will assess the degree of skin aging, perform a skin analysis, and recommend a sensible treatment with reasonable outcome.
Options of facial rejuvenation are explained to you, including efficacy and safety. Cost analysis is discussed and the number of sessions possibly required.
Persons between the ages of 30 and 80 years are eligible.
All skin tones show that the process is safe and effective because your own enriched plasma is used, but not all grades of wrinkling can be improved.
A photograph of the skin is taken to assist the follow-up and grading of the improvement.
Sixteen millilitres (16ml) of blood is obtained from the arm by venapuncture.
The blood is collected in special sterile tubes and centrifuged in the practitioner's rooms to separate the plasma. The plasma is drawn up into a syringe and activated with calcium-chloride; this stimulates natural growth factor release from the platelets in the plasma. About 8ml of PRP is obtained which is used for facial rejuvenation and injection.
The PRP is injected under the skin (including the dermis), under topical local anaesthesia. The forehead, peri-orbital region, cheeks, chins and dorsum of the hands, various body parts are the targets of aging and wrinkles, for rejuvenation. The process is relatively painless providing sufficient topical anaesthesia is applied. Nitrous Oxide or Happy Gas is available if required and Medically appropriate.
PRP facial rejuvenation (or also termed ACR) Currently Regenlab PRP renders the most efficient enriched ACR, compared to other products. Three treatments one month apart is advisable followed by a maintinance of at least once a year preferably every six months.
This entire process and injection time is simple and takes approximately 45 minutes a 1 hour in total. The process is on the same day and in the same medical practice.
Are there any side effects of PRP FACIAL REJUVENATION ?
Minimal: Expect minimal swelling, bruising and redness for 12-24 hours. Some clients experience headache.
Modest: Some patients may feel faint. A bruise at the venapuncture site may be visible for 2-3 days.
Severe: In rare cases, skin cellulitis may occur which can be treated with antibiotics and cold compresses. Occasionally hospitalization is needed in these cases. Secondary skin infection is a rare complication.
Can anyone have this treatment?
NO! Not everyone is suitable. Persons with skin disease (SLE, porphyria, allergies), cancer, chemotherapy, severe metabolic and systemic disorders, and abnormal platelet function (i.e. blood disorders). Anti-coagulation therapy and underlying sepsis excludes the use of PRP.
What results should I expect from the treatment?
Results are visible at 3 weeks and improve gradually over ensuing months with improvement in texture and tone.
Cosmeceutical and Light therapies can enhance the results.
Advanced wrinkling cannot be reversed and a minimal improvement is predictable in persons with alcohol and tobacco abuse. Combination therapy is advisable talk to our practisioners.
Severe scarring may not respond.
Further plasma treatment is also popular and safe. PRP - ACR is effective and well tolerated, but patient selection is important if predictable results are to be expected.

BRD, I have tried to send you a private message, but apparently your in box is full. You seem to be a very conscious doctor. Are you going to start performing this procedure soon? And are you really located in Bulgaria? I am in Romania. Could you please make some room in your inbox, so I can contact you? Thanks a lot in advance.
BRD, would using skin cells that are turned into cells that act and look like embryonic stem cells be more effective for scars and rejuvenating skin than adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells?
If so, how soon and easily can this technology be applied for this purpose?
Thanks!
yeh but its not been updated ina while..hes on 96 harley street.www.harleystreetskin.co.uk
Hi there,
Reading your posts on acne scaring. Im also based in UK, Herts.
What would you recommend for acne scaring? You said you got a 70% improvement?
How did you find smartxide? Did you use Dr Khan for that also?
How is the stem cell thing going? How well did that work?
Sorry for all the questions? Was thinking of booking an appointment with Dr Khan?
Kind of wanting some advice
Thank you
