I don't take any vitamin pills. And im sure this A vitamin topical oil causes it, because it disappears (side effects) when I stop using it for a few days. But my acne forces me to use it.

back from my derm appointment....... i told him about the topical vitamin A regimen. he agreed that it was a good idea, since it is accutane-like, but he did recommend Levulan and Blue Light treatment for my insane oil production....is this a good idea?

I tried blue-light, didn't do a damn thing for me. You might have better luck though. I've read people online saying that it was indeed their cure.

I have been using this for about a month now. I have only noticed a decrease in oil production on my chin and cheeks. Of course, this was the least oily part of my face. My forehead still is horrible.

My question: I put a lot on my forehead since it is so oily, but I wonder if too much is a bad thing. Does anyone know if I put too much that it will not help more? I know they say that for Retin-A and Taz, but that is mainly because it will just dry you out. Any thoughts?

tried doubling the amount of vitamin A that I put on my face at night, but still no results, so I guess it doesn't really matter....

Hey guys topical Beta-Carotene also works. If anyone wants to try topical Beta-Carotene you should try it coz some say it is more efficient.

When topical retinyl palmitatate ( VC Labs etc. ) is applied on the skin, the enzymes on the skin converts it to retinol then the retinol is converted to retinyl aldehyde then the retinyl aldehyde is finally converted to retinoic acid which affects the skin.

When beta-carotene is applied on the skin, the skin converts it to 2 molecules of retinyl aldehyde then the retinyl aldehyde is finally converted to retinoic acid. As you can see, if we use topical beta-carotene the step is much shorter and the conversion to retinoic acid is much more efficient because it is a short cut process.

The good thing about this is you can use ordinary off the shelf beta-carotene capsules so it is much cheaper.

ive decided to go balls out with this treatment now...its a gamble, but i believe in this should be able to do something....

so i quit taking b5 all together as well as the neosporin(except if i have a cut on my face)

all i do is wash up with soap in the morning and night and apply vitamin a....keep it simple....at least this way if i clear up ill know exactly what did it, instead of not being sure if it was the b5, neo, etc.....

these breakouts are killing me right now though...i had better skin before i started this!!! evil.gif

Week 7 update: Well, my skin seems to be getting ever-so-gradually better. Still have blackheads and the occassional whiteheads. I'm dissapointed about oil reduction though, I expected better results by this time. I've noticed after a work-out at the gym im particularly greasy, after I break into a sweat. Argh sad.gif

I emailed VC labs about how long it normally takes for oil to be reduced, and was told that the first person to try it took 7 months to be completely clear. He now uses it every other day to maintain it. It works differently for everyone. I just wonder when I will be completely oil-free....

Topical vitamin A does not reduce oil production. Like i said, the active ingredient in Topical Vitamin A is not Retinyl Palmitate itself but RETINOIC ACID. We are depending on the ability of the skin to convert retinyl palmitate into RETINOIC ACID inside the skin. If Retin-A/Retin-A micro which is 0.1% pure retinoic acid did not cut your oil production, then this retinyl palmitate won't cut down your oil production either. You see, the only difference b/w Retin-A micro and VC labs retinyl palmitate is the form. Retin-A is retinoic acid preformed already but very irritating to the skin, VC labs is retinyl palmitate which is converted by the skin to retinoic acid and is less irritating coz the retinoic acid is inside the skin unlike Retin-A which is retinoic acid that comes from the outside of the skin. The skin does not want the retinoic acid coming from the outside of the skin so it gets irritated and peels.

The effect of high doses of vitamin A on the top of skin is to normalize the clogging of the pores by normalizing the keratinization process and it affects the oil produced by the oil glands by making it more fluid and slippery avoiding pore blockage which causes pimples. Topical Vitamin A changes the chemical composition of the oil that the oil glands produce reducing the comedolytic component of the oil thereby reducing pore blockage and blackheads.

If you don't have enough cash to buy VC labs retinyl palmitate then you could also use Beta-Carotene topically, it has the same effect as VC labs and it is also cheaper and more available. Just buy a Beta-Carotene capsule from any health store open it up or dissolve it in vegetable oil ( olive, soybean etc. ) then apply it on the skin. The higher the dose the better so look for the 25mg or 41,000 IU per capsule version of Beta-Carotene. If anyone wants to try this just post here on this thread and i'll gladly help you with the references or procedures.

http://skincarerx.com/retinol.html

"Studies have also found that this cell rejuvenation produces healthier, plumper skin cells. As we age, skin cells start to become slightly misshapen and altered in appearance. The new skin cells stimulated by use of vitamin A start to more closely resemble the younger, healthier skin cells of our youth. Use of vitamin A has also been shown to stimulate new collagen production.

The increased cell turnover caused by vitamin A has also been shown to be particularly helpful on acne patients. The skin exfoliation unclogs pores and helps fade acne scars." shock.gifshock.gifshock.gifshock.gifrazz.gif

wow, i had no idea this stuff could possibly help with scars....so you mean to tell me vit a is going to make my skin look younger, clear up acne, and reduce scars!!??!?!? this stuff almost seems too good to be true....

Deepoi, i'm a couple of weeks behind you, but in the same situation- no noticable reduction in oil yet, which was the main reason i bought it. If nothing happens by the time i finish this bottle, i'm unsure as to wether to get another.
