Can I use a gentle cleanser after massaging in the oil? I'm paranoid about wiping at my eyes with a washcloth too hard. Also it seems really like it would be very irritating to wipe and wipe until all the oil is cleaned off.

Using a cleanser would sort of negate the effects of just cleansing with oil. When you steam your face with the wash cloth, the oil comes off easily. I just had to wipe a few times, gently.

So, an update as to the spectacular failure with the OCM: After a few weeks of doing the OCM, my face has broken out worse than I've ever seen it in my life. My entire chin/lower jaw area is covered in whiteheads and other pimples, and they just keep surfacing and surfacing.

I finally had to get a prescription for a topical antibiotic (clindamycin), and that + BP and it's finally going away. SORT OF.

What a nightmare. I'd be really really careful when trying this method. It's NOT for everyone, and it's not a miracle cure.

The SAME thing happened to me!! I've never had major acne - a pimple here and there, but I used OCM for 3 wks before stopping and have stopped over 3 wks ago and it's STILL a mess. Little tiny bumps all over my chin - cystic type acne on my cheeks; forehead and jawline - HORRIBLE!!! And I'm not having much luck getting it under control :(

I agree - not for everyone :(

i'm really interested in trying this...when you guys say the castor oil really draws the gunk out, do you need to do extractions afterwards? or are you basically just rinsing away the gunk after the steaming?

Just wanted to pop back in for a minute to say that this absolutely did not work for me. For those who have been successful with it, I'm really glad for you, but I watched for three weeks as my skin got worse and worse, and months later I'm still dealing with the mess.

This is supposed to have no IB so for those who are trying it out and instantly get worse skin, I would stop immediately and try something else.

I agree with the person above me who said it didn't work for them. This method turned my skin into a mess, I broke out in places I never do and after 3 weeks since stopping it my skin has FINALLY calmed down, but it left me with some real nice red marks. Seriously my whole face was covered. So beware, don't let what happened to me happen to you (unfortunately I stuck with it for like 3 weeks....thought maybe it would get better).

For those of you who think it's a good idea to rub oil onto yor face, try some 10W-30 motor oil, and let us know what happens! :D

The OCM broke me out like crazy. I was practically clear but now my forehead + cheeks are full of cysts. It worked in the beginning and my face was less oilier but I got more acne. I guess it didn't work for me. I'm currently on a topical antibiotic called Fucidin Cream and we'll see how this goes.

This is great, if you look at Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps they're all oils. Even some of the ones mentioned above. It only takes a few drops and they last a long, long time. Great value! Google it!

Hi everyone ,

I never post but vowed if this worked I would. 5 months ago after a particularly horrible event with my skin, I came home extremely upset and out of desparation just started searching on the internet for anything at all that would possibly help clear my skin up and I found this site. I read TONS of posts for hours that night about all different things different things.

First let me tell you that I have had acne since I was a teenager and that was over 20 years ago. I would go through mild to moderate phases but was never acne free. My skin was always oily too. I would use acne products and my face would still break out but then be dry so then I would use a moisturizer and my face would break out even more. And I would get the huge painful ones that would just ache. This was how it was since I was a teenager and I have tried absolutely everything.

At the time I found this site and Barnabas's post I was going through a bout of a horrible breakout - the worst in a while and my skin was dry. I mean seriously - how can a face be dry AND so broken out?! But my skin literally hurt. So I spent the whole night reading this site and I kept coming back to Barnabas's post about OCM. So I decided to give it a try.

I dashed out to Wal-Mart and bought some Castor oil (for those of you asking you can find this near the laxatives) I read later posts after this to get the Cold pressed Castor which is what I now use but the kind from Wal-Mart worked too. I have been using this for 5 months now and my skin has not looked better! I am very excited! I was skeptical at first because some things with me work for a couple months then quit working and go back to the same ol' mess. I rarely now get any breakouts! When I started using this I saw results in about 3 days. The texture of my skin just started looking better almost immediately - it was truly amazing and trust me - I was a huge skeptic! I was just desparate so I gave it a try!

My mixture is 75% castor oil and 25% jojoba with some tea tree oil added on. My bottle is 4 oz. so I use about 60-90 drops of tea tree. I think it is important to note what Barnabas said in his original post which is Castor oil is fantastic at drawing dirt, bacetria and other nasty stuff trapped in your pores, while healing your skin - so just because of that I would think most would contain some castor oil. I also believe he said the oilier/more acne prone you are the higher your castor oil ratio - that is why I set my ratio at 3:1 - and since it has worked I have't changed it at all!

At first I did massage probably at least 5 minutes - now I am speedier at it and do not spend as long. I don't steam in the shower because I just didn't feel that got it as clean - though I know some folks do it this way. I run a washcloth under as hot of water as I can stand and hold it over my face. I do this at least 2-3 times. The first couple of times I massage in between the steaming. Then I just steam with the wash cloth and wipe it over my face at the end - I do that about 2-3 times (I steam with the wash cloth at least 4-5 times total) My skin feels silky soft and once all the junk got out my skin now it is just clear. I think the steaming is important - at least I know this is what initially made my skin feel so clean - which at the time - being skeptical - I really wasn't expecting my skin to feel so clean - I was expecting it to still feel greasy but it didn't. It really felt rather foreign to me because it wasn't dry and it wasn't an oil slick either - it was just soft - which is something I hadn't experienced before! Oh and the swiping kind of gives me a little exfoliation as well which is good.

I only do this at night. In addition I use an astringent of ACV (apple cider vinegar) and water - 1/2 and 1/2. Next I use Dan's recommendation of On the Spot for treatment. And last I use Aloe Vera - Skin Gel. When I get up and shower in the morning I don't wash my face with anything but water. I do not add other cleansers - nothing - and this is pretty much the same regime I use today. Adding another cleanser to me just seems like it is defeating the purpose.

Now I will be the first to say this is not for everyone . My sis tried this after hearing me rave about it and she didn't even have acne in the first place but trying this did make her break out. I don't think anything out there is a cure-all for everyone's skin, but I definitely think this one is worth a try! You just never know! :)

Anyone try this OCM on their back?

What's good to get rid of light superficial brown scarring?

Thanks

My current mixture is about 10% Castor, 90% Jojoba. Initially I tried the 50/50 mix of Castor/EVOO, however the Castor at that level was too drying. EVOO felt great going on, but it seemed a little too rich. Right now I'm debating on another oil. I don't know whether I want to try Sunflower oil or Sweet Almond Oil. Has anyone tried either with their mix?

I currently use the oil cleanser purchased from a local Yours Essentially website, very good for the OCM. I didn't break out from the OCM now but I used to break out a little. Leaves my skin quite smooth and get rid of some dead skin.

Does this method work well for blackheads and closed comedones? I mainly have annoying bumps. I never get a real surfaced pimple anymore. I almost wish my skin would do that. These bumps have been with me for years I hate it! I'm willing to try this but I wanted to know before I started the method.

the ingredients are: Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Tea Tree oil, Chamomile Extract, Goldenseal Extract, Ahapuhi extract, Bladderwack Extract, Palmarosa Oil, Petitgrain Oil, Lavender Oil, Peppermint oil

how does that sound?

its called Desert Essence: Thoroughly Clean face wash

Barnabas, you are truly on to something. Altho your method is a bit more high maintenance than I'd like, your argument holds a lot of water. I have been using Origins Clean Energy oil cleanser (olive carrier oil) off and on for the last 2 years with great success! I find when I use other cleansers and soaps, I can still see little white gunky plugs in my pores. I haven't had blackheads for the 2 years I've been using it. I still get hormonal acne, tho it's mostly under control.

I'd like to find a more cost-effective oil cleanser so I may give this a try. Otherwise, I've also tried the new Eucerin Calming Body Wash (castor carrier oil) on my face with success as well.

Thanks for your sagely advice!

On a parting note, I'd also like to throw out this tidbit: I just tried AcneFree for the last 3 months just for kicks and giggles. My skin was really clear for about a month, but then I got these weird red bumps all over that wouldn't go away. I just kicked the habit two weeks ago, and my face is breathing a sigh of relief now. (After a bit of help from the oil cleanser, Neosporin and Eucerin moisturizer to clear things up!) Don't use AcneFree--it's total crap!

Well I tried 50:50 castor oil & jojoba oil & it did NOT cause me to breakout, yippee! (I even repeated the process twice with no breakouts!) When I woke up this morning my face had a semi-matte glow to it, not oily but it just looked very supple & moisturized. =) I have combination dry/oily skin, a lot of bright red scars on my cheeks, & usually moderate-severe acne (but lately my face is clearing up nicely with natural remedies!! Urine therapy, honey/aspirin mask, lemon juice, and now OCM). I also have a lot of flaking due to the recent dry cold weather & BP. OCM seems to have eliminated all of my flaking in just the first application!! I think I can actually wear mineral makeup now without worrying about stupid dry skin making it look icky.

I applied the oil twice last night because I did not think the washcloth was effective at opening my pores (it seemed to immediately become room temperature), so I repeated the process when I took a shower. I left the oil on my face while I showered, and when I finished everything else I had to do I took the washcloth & soaked it in the warm/hot water & applied it to my face (while still standing in the shower) for about 30 seconds to hopefully really make my pores open up if they hadn't already. Then I removed the washcloth & gently rubbed in the oil with my hands. Then I used the washcloth to gently rub the oil off of my face, which adds to the exfoliating process. If you have a lot of active spots on your face, keep in mind excessive rubbing with the washcloth may aggravate them so remember to be extra gentle in those areas.

The only thing I don't like is having to clean the mixed oil from my small mixing cup. The oil can be difficult to get rid of. I had to use a combination of soap & wiping it off with a paper towel.

If you're waiting to give this a try, I definintely recommend it! Maybe try it on one area of your face if you are nervous about it causing breakouts...

Thank you Barnabas for bringing this method to my attention!!

I cup my hand and mix the oils with my finger. :) It might not mix as nicely as it would in a cup or bowl, but that way I can just rub my palms together and then massage my face and I don't waste any of the oil.
