alright....well ive tried numerous things in the past and nothings worked. Ive spent HUNDREDS of dollars on everything dans, proactive, minocycline, etc. Ive got like 2 big ones and a few small ones so ive been pretty lucky with not getting the severe acne. Anyways, I went out and bought everything so todays my first day. I already put on the SA this morning so i'm about to go put the SA and the other stuff on right now...hopefully it works, i want my skin clear!! I'll log back on and tell you all about my results!
Hey!
Don't be discouraged if after using just these 2 products you still feel you could benefit from some topicals and not just washes. As I stated in my other post, I found my best results came from using an SA scrub in the AM followed by 2.5% BP lotion. My skin just responds better to having a topical on it, more than being washed off. BUT, the SA remains the first step in both these regimens, which I feel adds to the BP (wash or topical) sinking in a little better. Give it a try, see how it works, and if you need something further, then add to it for a little more protection.
Good luck!
I have been using bp 2.5% for over a year now and have tried AHA with some success, but this salicylic acid addition seems to be really helping me. I originally read about it on another thread and am so glad I gave it a try. I use the SA morning and night from Paula's Choice, and apply the BP lotion at night. It can irritate your skin initially but you just need to take it at your skins pace. After an initial breakout, which I perservered with when I found this thread a few weeks ago, my skin hasn't had any new pustules. BP 2.5% lotion cleared me about 70% in a bad month.. 85% in a good month. This just seems to have given me the edge to get completely clear.
Just remember to take it at your skins pace though as some of the breakouts I have read about here sound like irritation ones.
This is a great thread Botchla with some good balanced views,
Thanks for sharing!
I use both SA and BP as well. Dan's BP (and entire regimen) got my skin the clearest it has ever been in my adult life. But it didn't keep all of the breakouts away. So I decided to experiment with SA and BP. And the results are absolutely incredible. Seriously.
Here is my evening regimen:
Wash with Dan's cleanser.
Apply Paula's Choice 2% BHA gel
Apply Dan's BP
Apply Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Gel
For morning, I just use Dan's cleanser and BP plus the Skin Balancing Gel. It has seriously made such a huge difference in my skin.
alright well, i started this up on Friday and today is Tuesday...so far ive been breaking out. Is this because everthing is rising to the top? When can I expect the breakouts to go away and the skin to start clearing up? Its clearing up a little bit but....
I use the SA and BP twice a day, in the morning and right before i go to bed. i also put on some neutrogena on the spot BP stuff when im done with the SA an BP things
I was going to try the cleanser..but at the moment I'm using Clean and Clear Steam and Soft Scrub. Should I just stick with that for now? I was thinking about getting the day and night lotion. Has anyone ever used the lotion? These products are from Clean and Clear Soft.
Prolly riight , i use
SA 2%. from OXY cleansing Pads ( i use it sometime cause it dry my face ^^ never used SA ... so need get used to it. but i use this for Oil and dirt... and prevent break out )
BP 10% ZapZyt ( i use it on acne or acne that are forming. )
My face is clear.. i only got 1 acne is dried now.. and decreasing so fast.
and i use 10% BP soap for back acne etc. is clear as well
I have 2-3 acne forming. lets see what zapzyt can do i got it yesterday.
Proactiv was great while it lasted... my face got to oily cause of this crap. , felt like getting worse.
I even ate junks not break out i love this products.
Wow, I can't believe I'm going back to this regime again. It worked really well for me about...3 years ago? Then stopped working. But I'm so desperate for something until I see the derm that I'm going to give this a go again. Nothing has ever worked for me second time round but we'll see how it goes.
clean and clear products suck!!!!!!!!! the natural way is the best... commercial products helps out with acne for the time being, but in the long run RUINS our face. when our face starts to get worst, what do we do?? we buy more of there products. DO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS
I read this a while back and gave it a shot...it worked wonders for me! The BP and SA kept my skin so clear that I couldnt believe it. Everything was perfect until after a couple months of this everything went to hell. I guess I developed an allergic reaction to the BP and now I cant get anywhere near it or my face will get so itchy that I have to scratch like a crackhead all damn day! Now im breaking out again and I dont know wat to do. Im currently using an asparin mask but its not doing as much to prevent breakouts as the BP did. ANyone experience anything similar with this regimen? And if so, wat can I do about it?
I have sensitive skin so I was wary of this, but I thought I'd give it a try. I've been using the Continuous Control Acne Cleanser for two months or so now, morning and night with moisturizer. It works okay alone- got rid of the stuff on my chin but the stubborn ones on my cheeks wouldn't go away.
I'm using Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser. It has 2.5% SA but also has a bunch of stuff like soy extracts that make your skin feel good. I use it morning and night.
I'm also using Clean and Clear Continuous Acne Cleanser (the 10% BP wash).
Also use a moisturizer after both washes and sunblock in the morning. That's just basic skin care there, don't want wrinkles to replace the acne.
So far: I've had an initial breakout. For those who are using this as a "bad experience", look it up and you'll see most acne products cause initial breakouts. I've been using it for 4 days. It really gets my skin clean, so I'm assuming the initial breakout will eventually fade. I'll update and let you all know how it's going.

Never experienced it, but I've heard some shout outs for hydrogen peroxide in this case. I know Philosophy sells products with this (BP free) but they're expensive. You can also try looking it up and see if you can make your own, or find other products with it.
After reading up to page 7, I think I am going to give this regimen a try. I will get these products tomorrow, and give an update daily for those who want. Here's a brief summary of my acne:
I have very oily skin.
My acne started when I was in 5th grade. Weirdly, it was only on my scalp, where the hair grows, and nowhere else. Since the hair covered it, it was ok, but it was VERY severe, all over my scalp, I couldnt wear hats cuz of the pain. After a while, though, without any special treatments, it went away, and now I am 100% clear on my scalp
When I was in 7th grade, my facial acne started a little, just on my forehead, on my lower jaws and on my nose. It was moderate, and I used several facial cleansers and over the counter BP and SA products, but none of them really worked. It just naturally went away in 9th grade.
When I was in 9th grade, my back, shoulder, neck and chest acne started. REALLY BADLY. My chest and neck acne went away after a while, I still get minor ones, but compared to the past it is much better. My back and shoulder acne has never really stopped, and I will not take off my shirt in front of my friends, due to the severity of my back acne. I didn't do anything to try and cure my chest/back acne, mainly due to the fact that I don't really know what to do.
When I was in 11th grade, my facial acne came back, but this time on my cheeks and lower jaws, not so much my forehead and nose anymore. This time it was VERY severe, and I would get 3~4 new BIG pussy whiteheads every night. After a while, it diminished down. I used various cleansers and over the counter BP products again, but I don't think any of them really helped.
CURRENT:
I am still having problems with severe back acne and minor acne on my cheeks and lower jaws. The main problem is I have very oily skin, and I get a million little bumps on my cheeck that are only noticable from about a foot away. Any farther, you can't see them, so my face looks pretty clear in facebook photos. I get big whiteheads once every 2 weeks or so on my face, and I want to get rid of this.
I have tried:
Proactive, Nature's cure (10% BP cream, pills, cleanser), Doctor's prescribed 10% BP cleanser, Antibiotics, Cetaphil or Neutrogena cleanser + Neutrogena 5% BP cream + 2% Oxy clean SA pads
I am willing to give this regimen, I will keep you all posted, and if I (hopefully) clear up significantly, I may post some before and after pictures.
EDIT:: Oops, most importantly I forgot to mention that I tried Dan's regimen pretty recently, which failed miserably. After 2 months of breaking out, I decided to scrap it.
UPDATE:
I've seen definite improvement in my skin thus far. I've been using this system for almost a month and I'm actually very happy with it.
The pimples on my chin and neck area are GONE. Let me repeat: GONE. I used to get 5-10 at any given time, both whiteheads and big cystic suckers but now they're nonexistent and have been for weeks. I did get one bump on my chin yesterday but I think that was because I started a new job and am moving, so the combo of stress and little sleep and forgetting to wash my face at night took its toll. But besides that my chin area is clear.
Also, the really stubborn breakout on my right cheek near the hairline is also fading quickly. Currently I have NO active zits there and even the red marks are fading pretty quickly and can easily be covered with makeup. I'm really, really happy with the results there.
At first, I got a breakout in areas that had never been acne-prone for me before, like my forehead and nose. Once that went away though (about 2 weeks in or so), I could see my skin improving and it has continued to improve with no other complications. I'd say don't drop this method unless you're at least a month in with no improvement. My moderate acne actually got worse at first and popped up in areas it hadn't been, but now it's gone all over. Yay!
To recap (see my earlier posts if you want): I use Aveeno Complexion Clearing Foaming Cleanser (with SA in it) and Clean and Clear Continous Control Cream Cleanser (BP). I also use Cetaphil Moisturizer when I feel I need it and I use SPF every day. So more like 4 products, but this has actually simplified my routine overall (I used to use a TON of products). It also makes cosmetics less necessary, which is awesome.
Oh, but watch your clothes. The Clean and Clear bleached several of my shirts and towels that I had used to dry my face, so I'd recommend only drying your face with white towels.
I recommend this method for those who have tried SA and BP separately with only mild success. I also recommend finding the gentlest products you can so you don't fry your face. My products are working pretty well for me Good luck!
hey everyone... i also heard that BP was really bad for your skin and can leave like a lot of damage later on. i used to use acnefree until one day after i'd put on the lotion my whole face started turning bright red and itching like crazy. i stopped using it immediately. 2 years later i tried proactiv and it was even worse and i couldn't go to school because my face hurt so badly. i dont know if i suddenly became allergic to it or what but if it happens to you dont ever reuse it. anyone have an idea as to what works for acne? because im pretty desperate i've tried *everything*: proactiv, acnefree, clearpores, murad, neutrogena, clean and clear, dermalogica, desert essence, some organic thing from whole foods, dermaquest, and i think there might be a couple of others but im not sure. anyway... so far dermaquest has worked the best for me and i only used their beta hydroxy cleanser but they have a complete acne kit thats supposed to be really good so i want to try the whole thing. the only problem is that its really expensive. back on the topic of benzoyl peroxide though; i have heard that the best possible acne kit with that in it is obagi which you can only get from a dermatologist but is also super expensive. however, my friend used to have horrible acne and she started using that and she was recently voted best skin.... any other suggestions let me know.
I have tried this thing and I wouldn't redommend it. the fact is that a leave on product works so much better.
agreed. i used this regime, but applied a benzoyl gel afterwards as a leave on too and it worked quite well to be honest.
I HONESTLY COULD NOT STOP PICKING THOUGH, I BECAME ADDICTED TO EVERY SMALL DETAIL GAH!!
i try to get out and much as i can and not get close to mirrors. every now and then i look at myself during the day and i find myself looking good and i keep it at that. but days i stay home im always in the bathroom staring at each detail and i know its the worst thing to do
I've been using this regiment for about a week and a half. There's been little or no progress. Not even those huge breakouts that everyone has been talking about.
I've been thinking about using both products morning and night. I think my skin is tough enough for it because my skin hasn't been drying up or anything from this regiment. Do you guys think it's a good idea?
I have been on my regimen I'm doing now for over three months and I am now about 96% clear. Aside from my regimen I use Neutrogena Healthy defense daily moisturizer with SPF 45 because of the BP in the Clean and Clear (plus I live in Texas). I also make sure I drink plenty of water and I take a Vitamin (Centrum) every day (however I cannot cant say for sure if affects my acne). I like this regimen alot because, being a busy college student, I dont have to actually apply anything to my face that I need to let dry. It is a quick morning and night regimen that is also cheap and lasts awhile. Well, just thought I would share whats working for me. =P
Feel free to send me questions

YES! Use a moisturizer at night if you get too flaky...

I meant using both the SA and BP in the morning and at night. lol.
I joined just so I could add to this thread: without ever having been a member of Acne.org and never having heard of the "Botchla regimen," I have been using the exact same regimen for over a year and have found nothing to work better. I have tried Benzaclin, Duac, Differin and Proactiv, among others. Nothing made a lasting impression. But these products together are the solution!
I use the Clean & Clear Cleansing Scrub (what a coincidence) and a 10% BP prescription from the dermatologist. In addition, I use a 15 SPF oil-free moisturizer (Purpose has a to-die-for selection of multi-purpose (haha, get it?) moisturizers, and the Proactiv one works well, despite the foul smell).
I have also added a toner (I use Burt's Bees Tomato Garden Toner, but the Proactiv one is a great substitute). Many argue that toners are unnecessary and can even be detrimental to the skin, but I have a very oily complexion and find that the toner makes me feel cleaner. Whether this is a placebo effect or not, who knows. You can add or remove products to the regimen at your own desire.
Here is the regimen I follow:
Morning
1. Wash with C&C cleanser. Pat dry.
2. Apply toner to face, let dry.
3. Apply SPF moisturizer and go!
Evening
1. Wash with C&C cleanser. Pat dry.
2. Apply toner to face, let dry.
3. Apply BP and go to bed!
As Gotchla has elaborated on, the key is the salicylic acid followed by benzoyl peroxide. I also find that an exfoliating cleanser is a must. No ordinary cream cleanser will do.
What I also wanted to mention was that just this week I have run out of both the C&C cleanser and my prescription BP. After a long time at the store debating the options and price-comparing, I decided that I would try the Neutrogena Advanced Acne Solutions kit: it contains all the key aspects of the regimen in a $20 box.
Step 1: Cleanser .5% salycilic acid
Step 2: Night Lotion 2.5% benzoyl peroxide
Step 3: Day Lotion SPF 15 moisturizer
My one complaint would be that this is a lot less medication that in the usual products (compared to 2.5% SA and 10% BP). Just the same, it's convenient and I want to be able to review it. For people new to the regimen or with sensitive skin, I'd suggest this as a place to start.
