Pros:

Improvement in overall skin tone, dries spots out swiftly/ overnight. Generally pleased, skin def looks better.

Cons:

break outs in new places, particularly if you miss the retin a for a few days. Increased prominence of bumps in the short term.

I'm using Retin-A 0.01% and have been for about 3 months. I have oily skin all over, scar easily and had bumps under the skin when I started with mild acne. I do not always manage to put this on at night but when I do consistently, my general skin tone is clearer and more even, despite some isolated spots. I've also noticed that the bumps beneath my skin are becoming more raised and prominent and there are more of them. From what I gather, this is part of the 'purging' effect. Unfortunately I am a bad one for going out and not cleansing my face before bed, and when I missed out Retin-A for a week before going to bed my skin broke out in really bad acne, huge red bumps with pronounced heads- never had this before, tho when I went back on it they cleared very quickly. The peeling described by other, and when I've used it consistently my skin has looked quite glowing with a bit of help for isolated blemishes.

Pros:

After 4+weeks, acne is clearing and previous scars are disappearing

Cons:

Product takes a while to work

Currently I'm on doxycycline (50mg 2x/day), erythromyocin (topical solution), and retin-a cream (generic). I've been using these products for the past month. My acne is clearing up and my skin has a better glow overall. Some advice: 1. This product takes 2-3 weeks to actually see some positive results...don't give up. 2. Use cream at night--pea sized amount and make sure you wait between 20-30 minutes after washing your face to apply. It doesn't work as well if your face is not completely dry (I've learned the hard way)

Pros:

Clears acne, healing old scars nicely

Cons:

Peeling if used twice a day

I have used Retin-A Gel 0.025% for about 2 months now and my acne has definetely improved. I didnt experience any initial breakout but i did peel but a little but moisturiser sorted that right out. I find if i have a heavy one on the booze or eat greasy foods e.g pizza, burgers etc a week later my skin becomes alot more oliy and i will breakout but pimples are usualy dried out after day and just peel off. I still have scars from previous spots but they seem to be fading well. Works for me, why not give it a go.

Pros:

smoother skin, clearer skin, not as irritating as other products.

Cons:

if you use too much, your skin can peel. price.

finally, a product that works. i didn't experience the breakout period that the product claims you go through. it has been really gentle. i do have a occasional pimples but they are tiny and go away in one day. seriously. i highly recommend to anyone who feels like they have tried everything. USE A GENTLE FACE WASH, NOT A MEDICATED ONE. i suggest this being the only acne fighting thing you use in your regimen. as for moisturizers, i have found success in Dermalogica's Active Moist. i'm serious, this is a great product when used correctly. follow the instructions! use sunscreen. stick with it. make sure to get retin-a micro and not just retin-a. they do two different things.

Pros:

I CAN TELL THAT ITS WORKING!!!...my pimples are becoming dry and although my face is worse then before im sticking with it because i know that results are 100% wirth it

Cons:

i have moderate acne...mainly on my chinline to my neck and some on my cheeks and forhead. This is due to retin-a...(bad breakouts when you first start using this is what ive heard)

stick with this stuff...

This stuff takes a really long time to work, but after the time it's amazing. I use it twice a day and no more acne!

Pros:

Makes your skin tone more even. For a while (6 months into it), my face was amazingly clear..but that was a height of happiness that didn't last.

Cons:

Over-dries skin around nose and mouth..even after wearing moisturizer you can see flakies. Burned like crazy the first month I used it. It doesn't burn anymore but it still gives me annoyingly flaky yet OILY skin.

I've recently started breaking out around my chin and forehead and the acne is deep and painful. I'm using Steiva-A 0.05%. Maybe I should ask my dermatologist to kick it up to 10%

Pros:

Cleared up my forehead.
Makes skin smoother.

Cons:

Broke out the rest of my face. Worst acne ever on cheeks, chin, jaw-line. Horrible peeling around mouth, flaking off when I smiled. Incredible sensitivity to sunlight and even some gentle lotions.

I used Retin-A Mirco for about 2 months. For my forehead, it did exactly what it was supposed to do: it cleared up the bumps that had started forming on it. No irritation on my forehead, but MY FOREHEAD IS MUCH MORE OILY THAN THE REST OF MY FACE! If you have oily skin, I say give this a try. But, if you're like me and have normal to dry skin on the majority of your face, then be cautious. I have had acne since I was 14--I'm 27 now--and this stuff has caused the worst acne I have ever had. I hardly ever had acne on my right cheek and none of my jaw-line; now, it's like I opened a flood gate. It feels like I mildly burned my face, and it's still recovering. I went back to ProActive after the Retin-A, and the first few times I used it, it burned on my face for 20 minutes because my skin was ultra-sensitive due to the Retin-A. I still use Retin-A Micro on my forehead, but only every other day. Be careful!

Pros:

HMMM saw my sisters face clear up, all i can say is i will have to give it time, right now though im breaking out alittle but its drying the acne up, and honestly it depends on what kind of skin you have, some people should not use this product.

Cons:

the acne and peeling skin, im a sufferer of adult acne

hmmm see what it will do w/ for you. it takes patience and risks if your acne is that bothersome/bad then see what it will do, i guess it goes by what kinda skin you have and how it will react to this product, the begining is negative but time and use of the product it clears up, thats why its prescription grade quality for ya, it is a drug for a reason people, not a miracle cure all. but it is a good product (tretnoin is known for many good properties, as long as u use sun screen!!!!!!!!)
August 28, 2008

Pros:

Smoothens out the skin. Only needs to be applied once a day or every other day after many month of use. Makes the zitz smaller.

Cons:

Rough in the beginning. Can take many many month to get improvements. Causes flaking. Causing vulnerability against the sun. Itching.

Need at least 6 month of usage before you can express anything about a product that contains Tretinoin. I have read some reviews here and most have just used it for perhaps some days to up to maybe a month. After 1 year you can then say, it worked or it did not work. I have used it for soon 6 month and it has helped to make my skin smoother and smaller break outs. I hope it can clear me 100% in another 6 month.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
