Pros:

Keeps skin clear

Cons:

Dry irritated iching skin

Im not sure what to think of tazorac right now. I Finished a 6 month course of accutane and have been using tazorac at night for 6 months following my accutane treatment. I thought I was ready to stop cause my skin was fairly clear, but still oily. So I stopped for about 8 days, and my skin got horrible. So apparently tazorac has been keeping me clear, but I do not want my skin too become completely dependant on it, so not sure if it is good or bad for me. I am a health nut that believes in all natural stuff so I dont want my skin to become dependant on a drug (tazorac). So I will be talling my derm this info my next appt and see what she says.

Pros:

my skin is softer and smoother than ever before. I'm really seeing results

Cons:

dryness, redness, breaking out at first which is inevitable with the start of any acne treatment

I've been using this stuff for about a month and a half so far and I've really seen some great results. I use zaclir face wash (benzoyl peroxide wash) and clindagel (clindamycin) in the morning and cetaphil wash with the tazorac at night. I'm also on solodyn which is an antibiotic and was prescribed yaz birth control by my gyno. The combination of all of these things has really made my skin great. The dry, peeling, red skin really sucks at first. Stick it out! It gets better and it's totally worth it. My dermatologist also recommended the magic mitt (a Jane Ireland product, can find it online or some stores). It's a very soft mitt you wear over your hand when you wash your face. It gives you a deeper clean that gets rid of more bacteria and really makes your skin smooth. This will help you with the peeling and to clean it all you have to do is wash it with soap and hang it up to dry Everyone should have one!

Pros:

I have used tazorac for a while, it stopped working so I went on differin 3.0, I think doctors developed this in response to a test whihc had Tazorac ranked hed and shoulders over differin. I am going back to tazorac, differin is not as effective.

Cons:

You will have not miracles, acne is a condition that you manage, there is no cure. Overall effectiveness, tazorac is better.

Overall Tazorac has been better. I have decided to stick with it, please don't use too many medicines, I have a little problem with this. Wait for one to work, there is no miracle drug, I have also had chemical peels and microderm, they help but acne is a codniton that is managed, not cured. Good Luck!

Pros:

None for me.

Cons:

Extremely dry skin (the kind you can only rub off because moisturizer doesn't seem to help!) and did help my acne.

Ironically, my college roommate and I both went home for our Dec 2006 winter break and came back to find out we were BOTH put on tazorac gel. Since then, I have only gotten worse. My dermatologist kept telling me it takes a long time, that I could just be someone who needs to use it longer. But over a year later I have only gotten worse! My roommate on the other hand went from horrible to PERFECT skin. We use the same face wash and everything, so I definitely can see that it does have the potential to clear someone up wonderfully. Also, her skin doesn't dry out at all, so I think her skin is tougher and can handle this product. My skin burns and peels off. I think you'll know after the first few months if it will work or not. And if your skin dries/peels and NEVER gets used to this product, then you can get off it. Worth a try since I saw my roommates skin become flawless.

Pros:

New acne is less frequent, not as "angry" when it appears, and goes away faster.

Cons:

Dry skin. I recommend Clean&Clear Moisturizer and use multiple times a day.

Although I havent had it long, I can already see improvements. My skin has had sever acne for 4 years and has never looked as clear as it has the past two weeks. The only thing I was worried about was during the first week, my acne really got bad but the dermatologist said keep on and sure enough, it is clearing up. Avoid picking at your skin because that causes more flakes and acne.

Pros:

At 0.05%, its better tolerated than retin-A or even the Regimen.
Works to reduce acne.

Cons:

no immediate results or indication that its doing anything, may cause your skin to worsen before it improves; not covered by many prescription plans and not very cheap.

I have been using this for around 6 weeks, but along with B/C pills as well as some oral antibiotics to prevent further acne for a while. Its hard, then, to tell if this stuff is what is working or if its just the other things. That said, I am certain that it improves overal skin tone and texture over time, but a very long time. That is the case with other retinoids. I will use this for a long time since it does no make my skin flake and peel at all. Try it. I don't think it will make your skin much worse

Pros:

As a 48yo woman who has battled acne off and on since early teens I can expertly say this is the most consistently effective treatment I have ever found. I know it works when I need it. I have used it when needed for about 7 years

Cons:

Pricey and drying if you don't properly moisturize. Also for me, my skin will look dry and "sunburnt" for about a week as it dries up then sheds the acne away.

I just got through recommending Tazorac to a friend who had samples, but had tried it and given up after a few days because she thought it made her acne look worse. I assured her that based on experiences I have had with the product, the "worse" look was actually her cysts drying and healing up. I told her to try it again and hang in there. As for the dryness, it was a tremendous discovery to find out that moisutizer actually helped. I think many acne prone people forget that oily skin needs moisture too. It need not be a fancy moisurizer, just a noncomgenic effective one. The $50 tube I have will last me about a year, because it does not take much for even full face coverage. I find that just treating my problem T-zone works quite well for me.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
