Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

None so far

Cons:

when i wake up it isnt as shiny

So i've been on this product about a week and i've broken out far more. It's red, more whiteheads, and its made me really depressed. I'm so self-consious, i've not wanted to go in public or even see friends. School starts in 3 weeks and im am the least excited. I dont think ill be able to handle the stares. I've only been on this product about a week so i hope it improves. I recommend this only if you arn't super self consious and if you are patient, unlike me.

Pros:

Dries oily skin

This stuff is amazing!! I've been on it for about a month and a half now and all of the darks spots have disappeared. I wash my face twice daily with Neutrogena Oily Skin Free Wash and let it completely dry, then apply small amounts of Tazorac followed by Eucerin cream to moisturize. My skin looks so much better now and I've received many compliments from family and friends. Now they want to try it too!

Pros:

It lasts along time! It somewhat keeps my acne under control.

Cons:

Doesnt work for combination skin! Doesnt help what so ever on blackheads! It kinda dries my skin but then my face gets oily!

Ive used it for a very long time and i still get breakouts! It doesnt really work even though my doctor keeps me on it!

Pros:

It starts out good, severe acne gets better but it doesnt completely go away. Scars start to blend in but it eventually stops.

Cons:

Face peels and looks oily at night, rubs off on pillow if its still oily when u go to sleep. Took way too long to start to work.

Ive used this for a couple months and it started out well- getting rid of about 1/2 my acne and lowered its severity. But it takes long to work so give it time. I still havent gotten rid of mine completely but im hoping it will go away eventually. If it doesnt start to work within the first 3 weeks stop using it and find something else.

Pros:

I did notice a slight difference overnight, and now after using it for over a year, my acne has improved dramatically. I used it in the evening with BenzaClin in the morning.

Cons:

I have very oily skin, and for about the first six months it made it more oily. Then in winter it dried my skin out so bad I had to use a lot of moisturizer in the morning so that I could put makeup on, then later in the day the dryness would go away

I recommend this highly. It has indeed worked wonders. This is especially good if you don't already have dry or oily skin. With insurance, one rather large tube only cost me about $20, but without insurance it would have cost almost $300. A tube lasts for about 6 months, or longer depending on how much and how often you use it.

Pros:

Keeps skin clear

Cons:

Dry irritated iching skin

Im not sure what to think of tazorac right now. I Finished a 6 month course of accutane and have been using tazorac at night for 6 months following my accutane treatment. I thought I was ready to stop cause my skin was fairly clear, but still oily. So I stopped for about 8 days, and my skin got horrible. So apparently tazorac has been keeping me clear, but I do not want my skin too become completely dependant on it, so not sure if it is good or bad for me. I am a health nut that believes in all natural stuff so I dont want my skin to become dependant on a drug (tazorac). So I will be talling my derm this info my next appt and see what she says.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
