Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

DOES SHOW THAT ITS WORKING

Cons:

Skin gets worse before it gets better

I have been using this product for about month now and was not seeing any results. I changed the soap (white dove) to Cetaphil and have seen better results since then. After using Proactive, I was desperate to try anything. Can't wait until the summer. Hopefully, my skin will look like my son's, only darker, lol.

Pros:

works over time

Cons:

burns, dries skin out, makes it peel

My derm gave me this and warned me at first it will be harsh on my skin, and it was, but after my skin got used to it (took about a month) it started to really work, i used it for about 9 months and was really getting results until i ran out. i feel like my skin is starting to break out again, so i'm back to the derm to see what else to do! *also a little pricey, but it is an rx, and worth it.

Pros:

The only product that will clear up my acne. Not Differin, not benzol peroxide, clindimycin, salycilic acid, glycolic peels.
Helped lighten sundamage too!

Cons:

The flaking and burning. It lasts a long time. For me the first time (i stopped using for a while for all natural, needless to say i broke out horrible) around 2 months. This time only a month. Its embarrasing but so worth it. Flaking stops when the bumps go away
Also I experienced a rough initial breakout

Great Great Great! (When the mountain of flaking and initial breakout is over, I'm willing to bear through it). Always wear sunscreen with this and any other retinoid.

Pros:

Stopped little pimples from becoming bigger pimples. Reduced swelling from pimples that I shouldn't have picked, but did pick. Face is clearer.

Cons:

You have to give your self time to apply. First wash your face, let it dry. Then my doctor told me to apply a mosturizer BEFORE applying the tazorac, so I did, then had to let that dry (15-20 minutes) then lightly apply tazorac.

I use tazorac at night and acuzone in the morning. I read a number of postings about people having a lot of discomfort and peeling. I took heed, and was sure to use a mosturizer first. I also just used the amount recommended, and resisted the urge to slather it on. It is strong, and even though we all may feel that our faces can take anything (since we suffer from acne)....you gotta pay attention to the directions! Also I was told to use it only 3 nights per week and work up to every night, which is what I do now. I never had the discomfort that I read others did. I think I itched one night in the beginning, and I made sure I skipped the next night and was fine. While I did have peeling, it felt as though the pimples were peeling away, so that's not a bad thing, and the peeling was only happening where the pimples were. If I had a particularly "bad" pimple (or one that I popped), I didn't put mosturizer on it...I put a smidgen of tazorac directly on it.It was visably smaller the next morning.

Pros:

Clears white heads and smaller pimples first.

Cons:

Makes you skin sensitive and flaky. & it could be a lot of money if your insurance doesn't cover it.

Its a good product and it cleared my whole forehead but I'm still waiting on the cheek area. But I'm keeping my head up high. (:

Pros:

Works…period

Cons:

Terrible IB, itches like hell and the face looks greasy

I have been on this medication for about 13 weeks and my skin has cleared about 90% however, I have some deep red scars thanks to tazorac. My der gave me 5 samples and I still have 2 so I only used 3 in 13 weeks. I have a big tube also that I paid nothing for. If you have mild acne please do not use this product or you will be crying afteward as you will be left out with deep acne scars not mentioning the terrible initial breakout and the paintful acne you will get before it clears. It will clear though. I do recommend it to anybody that has moderate acne like mine. It also doesn't get rid of white heads, I still have many in my nose. I am now on finacea to clear my marks, hopefully it clears my pores.

Pros:

It helped with my oily skin.

Cons:

The first week, my acne blew up so bad! I applied an oil free cream before I applied the tazorac. I have been using it for 3 and a half weeks, and my acne is really blad. I woke up with 6 cystic pimples in a place I never get them.

I know this product will work, but you just have to be patient

Pros:

My skin heals faster and I have fewer breakouts. It does not help black heads, but reduces the size of pimples.

Cons:

My skin did not start getting extremely dry, peely, and itchy until two months into use.

It is the best product I have tried, my skin is moderate to severe, and this stuff leaves me with no more problem areas but only a pimple or two to stress over. I went from the .5 to 1 percent, and that made all the difference in effectiveness.

Pros:

Great product, check out my experience at [link removed]

Cons:

Insurance has to verify with the prescribing dr. that Tazorac will indeed be used for acne treatment. That is because they fear people use it for cosmetic reasons, and of course insurance companies don't pay for cosmetic products.

Give it a try. I did an was very happy with the results. [link removed]> Ruby

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
