Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Clears it up - makes skin smoother,

Cons:

Takes FOREVER to work...if I skip one night it all gets worse. Must be applied every single night.

I use this along with "acne kit 2" for sensitive skin from my derm. It is Effaclar Foaming Cleanser with Effaclar Toner and Effaclar K. Cleanse - Tone - Tazorac - Effaclar K. Along with Benzaclin in the morning....not anticipated results but getting there....

Pros:

seems to clear breakouts faster than over the counter things. Still waiting for better results.

Cons:

Extreme dryness and peeling. Red face (and im already red so this is bad haha). Worse breakouts in temple area.

Everyone says it gets worse before it gets better, and my derm says to keep with it, so thats what im doing. Although there are some cons, unlike OTC stuff it seems to be doing SOMETHING which i cant say for anything else ive used.

Pros:

I've only been using it for about a week but so far it seems to be helping.

Cons:

It burns, peels, itches and makes going out embarrassing....

It dries out my skin and hurts a lot but with patience i'm hoping to see results very expensive if you don't have insurance

Pros:

Cleared up my mild to moderate acne in about 2 months of daily usage.

Cons:

Sometimes burns and skin peels slightly

It's worth it! Stick with it! My acne got significantly worse before it got better. I thought of it as though the Tazorac was just cleaning all the junk out of my skin. Be sure to not use too much. I am using the gel and do not get the greasy residue I got from the cream. Go to the website and print off the rebate. I paid $30 for my perscription, sent in the rebate w/the upc from the box, and they sent me $35. I ended up making money!

Pros:

get rid of acne scars, heals acne quickly

Cons:

it can be drying, expensive

I love this product. i've only been using it for a week, but i can already see a big difference. my skin is more even and ALL OF THE ACNE IS HEALED. the only thing i don't like about it is that it can make my skin dry... to avoid that apply the medicene 30 minutes after you wash your face

Pros:

I LOVE IT. i used it consistently for over a year, and my acne scarring has reduced CONSIDERABLY. love it love it love it.

Cons:

apparently can't use it when you're pregnant, so instead of staying w/taz forever, i'm switching to a retin-a

sometimes i'd just rub a pea-size over my whole face, then other nights i'd actually dot on taz to every pimple (ha so there were white dots all over my face) but hey....it works! i hope my new retin-a works as well :(

Pros:

Pros:

I have always had moderate acne. (small bumps all over my face) I tried everything! I was even on Accutane twice and my skin stayed the same...it was never perfect. Tazorac is a miracle...my skin has never felt so smooth and looked this good.

Cons:

It does get worse before it gets better...it got worse for me for about a month before it got smoother. My skin was a weird oily but dry texture for awhile but you have to stick with it cuz it will work.

Its worth every penny.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
