Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Very inexpensive
All natural
Reduces size and severity of pimples
Product lasts a long time

Cons:

None

I can speak from my own experience with this product: it works very well for me and I have tried everything out there. It is a great spot treatment. It says to leave it on for 10 minutes, however I leave it on overnight and it works wonders. In the morning it is all gone and has soaked into my pimples. It quickly reduces the inflammation, size, and severity of the pimple. For me, there are zero side effects for this product, and I have extremely sensitive skin. There is no irritation, itching, burning, redness, etc. when applying. It is natural and very safe. I appreciate this product so much, it has saved my skin from all of the harsh chemicals that I have used for years. And it is CHEAP and lasts for a very long period of time. I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

Pros:

-reduces redness in pimples
-brings the pimple to a head quicker
-dries the crap out of the pimple
-pimples feel less irritated when the mask is on
-the cream lasts a very long time if you use it as just spot treatment

Cons:

-the smell, but you get used to it
-sometimes i have to put a crap ton of it on on pimple in order to see some kind of result
-will NOT make a pimple vanish over night
-hard to get off if you leave it on for a very long time

i really really really like this product. I've struggled with acne for four years now and this is the one kind of spot treatment that actually works for me and doesn't make my face break out when i use it. i have never used it as the actual mask, but instead i use it for spot treatment. i leave it on over night because i skin is extremely oily, so it doesn't exactly dry them out too much. pimples more than likely won't go away over night, but you will fore sure notice a difference in 1-2 days. i love this product and recommend it to anyone who suffers from acne in various spots on their face.

Pros:

OTC
Not too expensive
Seems to help!

Cons:

Slighty funny smell

I've been using this product for a couple months now and it seems to really be helping. I'll use it as a whole-face mask about once a week. Whenever I have a troublesome "spot", I'll put a dab on and leave it overnight. It doesn't make the pimple *magically* go away, but it does seem to make it smaller. I'm 43 and have hormonally induced adult acne which can get really depressing sometimes. (I never broke out this bad when I was a teenager!!) But if I stay very regular with my skincare routine, I can keep the acne spots down to a dull roar most of the time.

Pros:

It worked 4 me INSTANTLY! Better than Proactiv. Like the infomercial says! Made skin feel very smooth after 1st use and noticed a difference of clearer skin within 1 day! Only used the 3 steps and its changed my apperance. The spot tx seems to work very well overnight too.

Cons:

Gel does burn at first. Toner does too, so no longer use the toner. It reminds me of rubbing alcohol on my skin. But the cleanser and gel seem to do the trick. Now waiting for old scarring to fade but have clear smooth skin now.

Highly recommended! Nothing esle worked, especially this fast before! Wish i would have tried it sooner instead of listening to negative reviews. Im glad I found something without BP in the product because this is whats working for me. And only paid $29.99 online 4 intial shipment. Or now they have a $33 kit at Sephora that i buy instead of waiting on shipping! This price is very good considering that Proactiv used to be $49.99 before all the generic brands hit the market like Clean n Clear and all the other products i tried from the store!

Pros:

During the First 1-2 weeks my skin was clearing up amazingly and i was very hopeful for the end result, I like the mosturizer and the feel of refreshment on your skin.

Cons:

Im currently on week 3-4, Sunday will be the end of my 30 days. I have noticed an INCREASE of acne from when i started. I actually only had a few spots before and now my forehead is a mess!

I do NOT recommend this product to those with few pimple because it will start to clear up skin and the the acne will resurface and begin to multiple. Iv'e tried every medication out there and this was my last hope, and it made the acne worse than before. You figure they know how to treat this stuff nowadays. If the first weeks result kept the same i'd be more happy then with what my current results are. It seems to work great even after the first 4 days, but then just like every other medication it quickly begins to irratate skin and cause unexpected and terrible breakouts.

Pros:

This product is fantastic! I've never seen something work so well and so unbelievably quick.

Cons:

If you don't have oily skin, it might dry it out a bit. I can barely ever find it in Canada and have to order online.

The only cons to this product are that I can never find it in stores! It is definitely the best acne treatment out there though.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
