Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

-Minimizes pores-Smells good-Smooths skin-Nice packaging-Doesn't burn or strip skin-Reduces surface shine for oily skin

Cons:

The only con is that I would like for it to clear black heads better.

The bottom line is, this product obviously isn't for everyone. Try it out, see if your skin can take this product without making your acne worse. If you have sensitive skin i wouldn't recommend using an astringent no matter how light. But if you're like me and have oily skin, you'll love this product.

Pros:

i love this product!
i first use the clean and clear blackhead eraser
then use the biore pore strips, and then i top it off with this moisturizer. i put it on at night, so when i wake up, my skin feels so soft, and it completely GLOWS

Cons:

none

if you want a quick solution for blackheads, use my directions in the pros section. this moisturizer works well with my routine. ANYWAY, so the bottom line is that if you want a good moisturizer that doesn't cost that much, and leaves your skin glowing with radiance and is soft, buy ittt!

Pros:

While this product does absolutely nothing for my blackheads, I don't mind, because it does a really, really good job of keeping me from breaking out.

Cons:

The beads are kind of annoying and don't serve much of a purpose, since they don't seem to help with exfoliation. I've found that it's best to use this in the shower, otherwise the beads wind up in your hairline and are hard to rinse off.

It's a good product for my skin, and not nearly as harsh as some other salicylic acid products. Also, it doesn't have sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, which is an ingredient that always makes my skin way worse. This scrub keeps me clear of active breakouts (which I can't really say about anything else I've tried), but doesn't do much for the blackheads. I'd recommend using something else along side this to help with exfoliation.

Pros:

Works extremely fast even just washing your face once a day will make a huge difference. Nice smell and feels great on your face. Highly recommended for moderate + acne.

Cons:

Will dry out face if used too much. Start with once a day applications. Then progress to two a day. I didn't use the spot treatment until day 4 and I'm fine. No flakes! A little bit goes a long way!

After 10 years of trying different products to clear up my acne (Proactiv, Clearasil, Neutrogena, Noxema, Tetracyclean, Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, Retin-A and many more) the only thing that has helped me is Clean and Clear Advantage. This stuff is very powerful. Since the first use I haven't had a single breakout which is very rare for me. I woke up this morning and looked at my face almost completely blemish free. It actually made me tear up because I haven't seen that in 10 years. Just $20 for the Cleanser, Moisterizer, and Spot treatment. Or you can buy them seperately.

Pros:

Works very well. Leaves my skin very soft. I need to moisturize it RIGHT AFTERWARD though, otherwise my face is dry and irritated. But I never get acne if I use this consistently. Once I stop, I start breaking out. THIS IS MY LIFE LIFE.

Cons:

nothing much

IT WORKS. only if you have decent skin though

Pros:

Works fast, and you dont need that much so it'll last a while.

Cons:

Dries a little

I bought the astringent first at Wal-Mart for about $6.00, which dried up my face in a good way because mine is so oily! Then I bought the face wash for the same price at Wal-Mart, and in two days my face has been less oily and smoother and more refreshed. If they come out with a scrub I'll definitely buy it, because this doesn't really seem to help the stubborn blackheads on my nose! Completely recommended, go buy it at Wal-Mart for sure!!!

Pros:

Works well. Improvement over night. Easy to apply.

Cons:

Stings just a tad. most cleanse thoroughly before apply for full effect. Does not totally remove acne from affected area.

Works great! Greatly improved my acne problem. Now instead of a big ol' whitehead, I have a small some-what red bump! I figure that a lot of people do not use this product correctly. The directions say to cleanse thoroughly before applying. While in the shower, I use a microdermabrasion scrub. Then, [once I'm out of the shower] I use skin toner, then a moisturizer. After, I apply the acne spot treatment. Glad I bought it! ***ON SALE AT CVS!!! 06/20/09***

Pros:

it works!!

Cons:

not for facial cleanser unless acne is moderate or worse (harsh on sensitive skin or dry skin)

This stuff isnt for people with light acne, or sesitive skin. im mexican and have oily skin with moderate acne. i love clearasil, it gets rid of the excess oil, keeps it away, and has already improved my acne in only one week! leaves my face feeling fresh, clean, and soft.

Pros:

Burt's Bees Body Wash finally cleared up my back. Tetracycline, 3 rounds of Accutane, various soaps, this finally cleared up my back and chest.

Cons:

None that I can think of.

It is still a good body wash even if it does not help your acne, if you don't have a reaction.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
