A more dangerous way of using benzoyl peroxide that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. However, when used properly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin without the addition of antibiotics.

Pros:

Clears skin FAST!!!!
No burning or peeling like with Retin-a
Can wear under makeup
Works within days depending on how severe your skin is

Cons:

Must store in fridge
smells yucky but WELL WORTH IT
not easy to travel with because of how you need to store it
a LITTLE drying BUT anything thats going to work is going to dry you out a little.

LOOOVE LOVE LOOOVE IT!! I had been on this before, about a year ago. Sadly I wasn't able to be on it for 6 weeks consistently because of circumstances. But it did work rapidly during the short time I was on it. Recently my doctor where I live now prescribed retin-a. I was skeptical and sure enough, it worked a TINY bit but not well at all. SO I asked to be put back on the benzamycin because I believe it's the antibiotic in it that REALLLLLLLLLLY helps me out. Sure enough, NO BUMPS!!! and it's only been like a week! i LOVE IT and swear by it!!! It's not for everyone, but you have to find your fit. Try it! what do you have to lose right? My skin is HORRID., I get deep cysts and little bumps, The whole nine yards. It is unbearable. But now I am confident. Can't say enough good things about this stuff!! =D

Pros:

I have been using this product for almost two weeks and I have seen an improvement start in the last few days.

Cons:

Has been through a bad breakout after starting this medication. It may be "getting worse before it gets better" & I hope that is the fact. I think the breakouts may be hormonal though, as I did start a new birth control the same day. I need my skin to adjust to both.

I'm giving this product a shot and will probably be back to review it after several months of being on it. This is my first topical prescription, I did try oral medications but they made me sick so I got off those quick. I hope it works & I hope this helps :)

Pros:

Works

Cons:

Prescription required
Refrigerated cream that expires
A little big drying

This was my favorite prescription product. It's not as convenient that it has to be refrigerated, but it did give a nice cooling feeling on achy broken skin. I would have kept using it if my acne weren't so severe. I had acute cystic scarring acne all over my face, neck, chest, and back and it wasn't quite strong enough. I would recommend it for people with moderate acne and good health insurance.

Pros:

clears acne vulgaris in a few days, especially if acne is still active, and not some leftover, dried up, raised hovel

Cons:

a bit drying, a bit lumpy

Works like clindamycin, forming a drying, mask-like film on your face. I try not to break this mask by avoiding excessive speaking, so it's best if used right before bed (I'm quite talkative). Also, try to sleep in a cool setting, as sweating during sleep can remove the medication. I find it is more effective, albiet a bit more uncomfortable when used withOUT a moisturizer, as this seems to decrease the effects of the topical and make the mask less binding, if you will. Also, my mother used this YEARS ago, when I was a small child (I am now turning 21) and she still recommends it, as it was the only medication to clear her cystic acne. Though I would not recommend it for cystic acne, since it did not work on my own, everyone is different. As I have just gotten a microdermabrasion session, and my face is a bit raw, I will not be using this on my face for the next night, since I do not want to irritate my skin.

Pros:

works beautifully for my skin
apply every night
low cost with insurance
one jar lasts a long time

Cons:

bleaches clothing, bedding, towels
has to be refrigerated
cannot easily travel with it
leaves a white film on your skin

Freakin awesome stuff. I first got acne in 5th grade so my pediatrician prescribed Benzamycin topical gel. It worked fast for me ( a week) and kept bad break-outs away. It is drying but did not make my face peel or flake. Its the only thing I have ever used on my face (im 25 now) It has a lot of cons but its worth it.

Pros:

Clears up face in less than a month if you have mild acne

Cons:

Can be drying if you dont put a moisturizer before this product

Very good...definitely better than Proactiv if you do this: Morning: Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Dove Deep Moisture Lotion SPF 15 Night: Neutrogen Oil Free Acne Wash Dove Deep Moisture Lotion SPF 15 then.... Benzamycin (first time: use small amount and then gradually increase dose)

Pros:

Eliminated a few large pimples very quickly.

Cons:

Horrible side effects!

Although this cleared up some pimples extremely quickly, it irritated my skin to the point that my cheeks and chin were either itching or burning whenever I wasn't asleep. By the fourth day I was using it, my cheeks reddened and my forehead turned much darker than my normal skin color, and the overall effect looked like I had sat out in the sun for several hours with nothing but my face exposed. My doctor told me to stop using the product but I'm worried that my skin won't lose its rough feeling and that the weird differences in skin tone are irreversible. Although I was very glad that those big pimples went away, I am not willing to sustain what amounted to mild chemical burns on my face in order to avoid acne.

Pros:

I have had terrible acne since I was 14. I had cysts and zits all over my face including my cheeks and nose the t-zone area. My pediatrician suggested this when I was about 16. It took a couple of weeks to actually start clearing up and I did not have any more huge cysts on my face at all.I stopped using it after my face cleared up because of the cost but I am breaking out worse than before and I think I will use it again.

Cons:

You may probably break out really bad in the first few weeks, but it's the same with a lot of prescriptions. Also , if you have no insurance at all it'll be very pricey.

No matter what the price is, it is better to have a clear face than be suffering with acne.Trust me, I'm 18 and use lots of makeup to cover up my acne but you can still see it .

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
