Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Nausea, thirsty, not effective

I have used this medication for three weeks and my acne has not improved at all. The only change I have seen while taking this medication is that it makes me nauseated. Besides the nausea, I have had to change my eating habits in order to take it. Basically, it has not been effective for me.

Pros:

I think it helped alot with my back acne, but since I used the pill and started using dermalogica all at the same time I'm not totally sure which one did the trick, how ever I have totaly cleared up now with only a bit of scarring left...

Cons:

I think it was giving me headaches and making me feel sick but it could of been the pill... Other then that I think you have to be on it for a while which is a bit annoying

Its worth it to give it a try, if that doesnt do the job your dermatoligist or docter can help you.

Pros:

Doxycycline is cheap.

Cons:

Your skin will scar a lot easier, especially if you pick or squeeze acne. You will become a lot more sensitive to the sun and get severe burns.

It didn't work for me and my dermatologist is putting me on Accutane.

Pros:

Much clearer skin. I have like two little pimples now, but still alot of scarring (and after only 3 days)

Cons:

Every day, the symptoms seem to get worse, and they're always different. The first day I was really nauseous and almost puked in class. The second day, my vagina was burning and itching. Today, I have totally gross watery diarrhea. I'm freaked.

I'm going to try and live with it for a week or so, and see if I can clear up the acne before dropping my dosage down. My doctor started me on 100mg twice a day, which I think is pretty high.

Pros:

Relatively cheap

Cons:

Kills your stomach, explicit instructions to take on an empty stomach, little to no effects after 4 weeks

I never had breakouts until my early 20's, and even then, they were mild. I was put on Differin, and then Doryx after no results. It's been a month now and the acne has not cleared up one bit, maybe even gotten worse. Checked in with the doctor bc I was concerned and she was just as boggled, yet just upped my intake to twice a day. Very confused since I had mild acne to start with and these prescription drugs are not helping. Been on Differin for 7 weeks now, as well. May check with a new dermatologist in Atlanta.

Pros:

It so far has cleared up my acne for the most part.

Cons:

It takes a while for it to work.

I have very sensitive skin. I tried pro active, and broke out! Nothing seems to work for me. I don't take medicine, as I don't really believe in them, but I started taking this at 50 mg, twice a day, and cleaning my face with a special face wash I was prescribed by my dermatologist, and now after about 3 months, my face is very clear! I would recommend it to everyone, just give it time!

Pros:

cheap as far as prescriptions go

Cons:

caused breakout, nausea, dizziness

I was hesitant to take this at all because I know antibiotics aren't that great for your body. I guess I was right to be hesitant because I broke out with nasty cysts throughout the first month using it. My skin was never that bad before I started the doxy. It also causes nausea if you don't take it with food (which some say you shouldn't). I had some pretty bad stomach aches and it also made me extremely dizzy. Seems to work for some people though..maybe it depends on the root cause of acne.

Pros:

I use to take doxycycline 6 months ago. it cleared up my skin almost completely after taking 50 mg twice a day, combined with prescription benzyol peroxide

Cons:

when i stopped taking the medication, my acne returned a few months later. i puked at least 4 times because i took this medication without a meal. always eat while taking this T_T

I just want to not have to worry about acne anymore. although its barely visable, it is still there, i can feel it haha. i break out at least once every few weeks

Pros:

Looking forward to results and a visit to my doctor so they can prescribe more since its "taking my bacteria out" now im breaking out more. :/

Cons:

the doctor doesnt let me take more than 28 pills what a B****! havent gotten results ladies Dont wear make up messed my bealituful skin up now i look like s***.

Currently sucks.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
