Pros:

Works for a few months, can be totally clear for weeks at a time.

Cons:

Stops working eventually, and the acne comes back suddenly and with a vengence. Made the skin from my neck upwards much darker.

While it works, it's good. But it did make the skin from my neck upwards much darker. I don't know if that's photosensitivity or what, but when I'm topless, my body is a pale yellow/beige colour, but my neck is this dark, slightly reddish colour. It's actually really unpleasant. It actually looks like a make-up line. I would recommend this only as an interim medication, not for extended use. Two or three months at the maximum.

Pros:

Cleared me up in 3 weeks
Cheap and just has to be taken once a day

Cons:

None, I guess I have a tough stomach. I never had problems with nausea and the likes
Eliminating milk from my diet caused constipation

Give this a try. I was hesitant to take oral antibiotics at first, but my derma convinced in the end. I'll be on it for two months. For the first two weeks, i took two 100mg dosage. Then it was tapered off to just once a day. The acne therapy she designed for is a two-month Doxy maintenance and when I'm clear already, we'll switch to topical antibiotics. RIght now, I am also using 0.01% tretinoin at night and 10% AHA lotion in the morning. Now, I am not only clear but my pores are less noticeable too. I have oily skin hence I have not experienced terrible dryness and painful peeling from Tret and AHA. I am happy with DOxy and I just hope the effects won't be reversed when I get off it.

Pros:

Cleared up most of my pimples in a two weeks.
Only one a day, 100mg.

Cons:

Everyday except one I've had stomach issues, your basic diarrhea. The only day I didn't have watery stools the day after I had brown rice. Perhaps brown rice is the key.

It works but great it is a trade off with stomach issues. I take probiotics and still get rrhea. Doryx is supposed to better on the stomach than Monodox but its only slightly. I don't like that a possible side effect is darkening of your teeth --I'll monitor that closely as that's a trade off I do not want. I tried this after the natural route which didn't work for me.

Pros:

Within days I saw a durastic difference, at this point all of my cystic acne is completely gone.

Cons:

None, really.

I first tried a different antibiotic that gave me terrible side effects so I was very cautious about trying a new pill, but for me Doxycycline has really worked wonders. When I started taking the pills my cheeks, chin, and forehead were covered in cystic acne and within one week the severity had gone down considerably, and now two months later I haven't had a single cystic outbreak. If Doxycycline gives you bad side effects, try a different antibiotic! The same routine doesn't always work for everyone, but try all your options before you give up or move on to more dramatic means.

Pros:

I haven't really noticed a big different, maybe fewer deep pimples.

Cons:

Makes me really sick if not taken with food, but isn't absorbed by the body as well with food. Just kind of annoying to have to remember to take it after meal.

Really haven't noticed that much of a difference. I feel like there are better products out there. Maybe I will give it a little longer.

Pros:

Reduced redness.Slowly spots are going...not completely gone yet!

Cons:

Sensitive to sunlight.Must take it with yogurt or food and lots of water!!! Upset my stomach at first but then it's settled down.

I'm going use up my prescription (1 month) and go back for more if it's working well. I'm only on 100mg a day though. It seems to be less harsh than Ethromycin.

Pros:

clear beautiful almost porcelin skin, cheap as chips

Cons:

acne comes back a couple of months after being of doryx

i was on doryx for about a year and a half and i was so so happy with the results, i had terrible acne and this sure did fix it. i had smooth skin and suffered no side effects. then i went off doryx and it all came back ten times worse and my doctor prescribed me the oral contraceptive and acne treatment, dian 35. now this just made me six kilos heavier, depressed and made my acne worse. so now i have been back on doryx for almost a week and i can already see a significant improvement in my skin. i would definately recomend this if you have severe acne like me
April 25, 2008

Pros:

seems to have cleared my skin

Cons:

Horribly expensive
makes stomach sick

I was given Rx for Doryx, filled at pharmacy and was told it was $ 250.00. ( My insurance covered $100.00) so I had to pay difference. I can't imagine that this is better than normal doxycycline. Why not put me on something else? I do see results though. It has been 1 week. and Im burning in the sun and itching alot. too $$$

Pros:

Clears up your acne when u first start taking it for a couple of weeks. Easy to take.

Cons:

Doesn't completely clear up acne and acne comes back after a few months. When going off it acne becomes worse. Skin becomes extremely sensitive to the sun and looks unhealthy.

Good for a couple of weeks but not worth taking in the long run.

Pros:

It definitely works, eventually. It's a medication you have to be very patient with. Reduced redness, less whiteheads, breakouts from monthly complications aren't as bad, more controlled.

Cons:

It doesn't work if you drink milk one hour before or after. Watch what you're eating for calcium and iron before you take it.
I've gotten noticeably tanner, but I've accepted that this is also due to my genes. Using sunblock is a must!!

I was prescribed this in January of '07, and I'm terrible at routine so I did not take it regularly. I finally kicked it into gear about a month ago along with fish oil and topical vitamin E. I've been taking it regularly at 12:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M. every day. Twice a day, 100 mg. Ever since most of the strange swollen whiteheads on my cheeks have disappeared, only a couple left to go. Definite disappearance in redness, I now have an almost even complexion. All I had to do was follow routine and drink lots of water with it! It's all worth it. I don't think I'd recommend it for anyone that has BEYOND mild acne, it might not be as effective. Could be wrong, though.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
