Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

I only suffered slight upset stomach, no other side effects

Cons:

Made my acne worse than ever!! unless it was pure coincidence, as i had changed nothing else in my life...

Anti-biotics work differently for everyone, if something isn't working after 8 weeks. then drop it and try something else...

Pros:

It's actually working

Cons:

None, yet

I've been taking this for about four weeks and so far, so good. My skin hasn't gotten worse and is appearing less red. I am on 100mg twice a day. (I started 100mg once a day and about a week ago my doctor moved me up to twice a day). I was surprised to see so many people posting that they need to take this medication with food. My pamplet instructs me that for best results this should be taken on an empty stomach. I have been taking it just as directed, at the same time right when I wake up in the morning. I can't recommend this product to any one yet. I haven't been on it long enough.

Pros:

Works for a little while...

Cons:

Can't take without food, can't take with dairy, have to take twice a day, can't tan

I had been on Doxy since Dec. (around 3 months), in conjunction with micro derm. After about 6 weeks it was working great, and now my face is worse it seems (having stopped the micro after about 5 or 6 treatments). So, now the only thing I'm using is Benz. Perox. 10%. I guess I built up an immunity to the doxy I'm not sure. All I know is zits suck!! It's so stressful!

Pros:

None for me

Cons:

unless taken with food you will experience nausea. Can't take with dairy products. Dried out my eyes.

I have been on doxy 100mg twice a day for a month now. My face has never broke out this bad. It seems like more and more each day. I went to the doctor because I get the occasional bump and sometimes in cycles. She prescribed me doxy and said give it some time. All it did was make everything worse. When I look in the mirror I get depressed. Hopefully I can start accutane and see if that works. I wish I never would have gone to see a dermatologist because all she did was screw up my face. I would be much happier without taking this medicine. Now I have to try something else to stop what has just recently come up. Now I know how people feel that have severe acne.

Pros:

cleared my face in 3 weeks, still clear about 2 months later.

Cons:

none, unless it suddenly stops working (a scary thought)

I realize that drugs work very differently for different people, but doxycycline worked wonders for me. I was first prescribed monocycline, which seemed to make matters worse, and for months I refused to take any kind of medication bc I feared the same result. After taking doxycycline, my pimples disappeared in about 3 weeks. I have been on doxy for nearly 2 months now, and so far so good. I think, ultimately, that everyone deserves to feel good about themselves, or at the very least, to be able to walk outside in the sunshine and not be ashamed. I wish anyone who may be reading this the best of luck! Hold your head up high =)

Pros:

works well to prevent acne.

Cons:

Acne comes back after 4-6 months of taking it.

I am 27 and developed an acne problem at age the age of 21. Before that, I had clear skin all the time. Doxy works really well to treat acne short-term. As soon as I took it, I never had a pimple. I had moderate acne and have been taking doxy on and off for almost two years. However, at this time, i am resistant to it since I've take it on four occassions over the course of two years. The treatment last for about 4-6 month and then I would break out again, forcing me to be on it again. My acne now is considered mild. However, I am so used to clear skin so I am now on monocycline. Hopefully it will work. Acne is a real pain. My derm thinks I am nuts, but I don't think it is normal to get a new pimple every week. I feel like the acne treatment is a bunch of bull sh*t.

Pros:

Seems to help with cystic acne after about 3-4 weeks.

Cons:

As with everyone else, upset stomach if not taken with food. You need to hydrate more than normal while on this.

I take this to aid in the recovery of steroid induced acne. I had it pretty bad when I came off my cycle and I tried everything known to man. Proactiv, 10% Benzoil Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Tanning beds and the sun, detox teas, etc and nothing helped. This seems to have made it worse before it started to get better, but I can see an improvement. It is making the acne that is clogged deep in my pores, surface (that is the worse before better aspect). It takes roughly 3-6 weeks for it to start working, but everyone is different. Once it is built up into the system, then it does start to work. The bad thing is that you will build a tolerance and it will stop working, that is why it needs to be ran in cycles throughout the year in order to be effective.

Pros:

nothing

Cons:

did not work at all, saw no improvement, even a worsening of acne

did not help

Pros:

It seems to have worked a little, but doctor said it would take about a month to start working, trust me, I'm so excited to see what happens then! I'm almost there!

Cons:

A little crampy, stomach bug has been going around here anyway, so not sure if the upset stomach is from it or the med. like everyone else says causes it. Just a pain to take 2 a day every day, but hopefully it will be worth it.

I have had bad acne since about 13 and I am 27 now. I hate being a mother at 27 and also having to deal with acne! I think I have a really good doctor who knows what is going to work for me, and so I hope that it does! I've tried the proactive and it helped like wonders for about 50 days and then BOOM, allergic reaction to it that caused a horrible red itchy, patchy rash all over my face. Hopefully this doesn't do the same. I've tried many other things and I am just tired of trying things and so I really hope I have found my life saver this time! Good luck to the rest of you! I know how horrible a feeling acne can be! Just remember, you ARE beautiful inside and OUT!

Pros:

This thing really works!! you just have to be patient, just after a month i am now seeing good results. The antibiotic makes sure that you don't get any new pimples and it also makes me more calm and not stressed!! so i really do reccomend this..

Cons:

If you eat without food your stomach will hurt..

Works in due time..

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
