Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Starts working fast
No side-effects
Not time-consuming

Cons:

None, that stuff about stomach pain etc is all BS. Just take it with 2 full glasses of water after dinner and youll be fine.

Ive been on it for 4 weeks now and ive kept track of how many pimples ive gotten. I was amazed. I now havent gotten any new pimples for a week. But hey you never know maybe itll come back and i just have 4 lucky weeks. Btw im using this in combination with Tretinoin, try it, worked best for me so far.

Pros:

Have been taking it for about 12 weeks now and have had no new pimples in the past two weeks. Has cleared all my acne, just scaring left now. Absolute godsend.

Cons:

Seems to have caused some acne scaring - feels like all the acne that I had when I started taking it have frozen and scared. But at least my skin is now smooth and not bumpy

Try it! My doctor didn't think this would work as I had already tried a couple of antibiodics in the same family which had 0 impact on my skin (other than making all my skin feel really dry and stretched). But it has worked!!

Pros:

Clears Back up real well. (I recommend for back acne not face acne.)

Cons:

Doesn't do much for your face.

Since I was 12 I've been trying to clear up my acne - 4 years. Back then it was my face would have some random breakouts, not consistant just random. The following year I thought I'd cut my hair short thinking it would help. It didn't. My Acne flaired up, spread to my back and got really fierce, I couldn't sleep and when my friends patted me on the back "OMFG" - I refused to tell them because Bacne is embarrasing. So finnaly I decided to treat it, I used Benzagel 5, Acne Masks, Creams, Cloths but NOT pills. So, after 4 years I convinced my dad to buy me something. The following day I went to the doctor's and she prescribed some doxycycline pills. So now, I'm using it regularly and I'm glad with it but it's doing jack for my face. Now I have some convincing to do, see if I can't get some more expensive creams or something. Too anyone whose been in the same situation as me, in a worse, or just needs some cheering : -Keep fighting, 1 objective in life, Crack the anvil not the h

Pros:

Slightly helps, but the bacteria P. acnes is growing more and more resistant to tetracycline antibiotics, which doxycycline is.

Cons:

Must be taken 1 hour before eating or two hours after, often causes stomach pain, must be taken with 8 or more ounces of water, you can't lay down for 30 minutes after taking it, it makes you sunburn more easily, and it doesn't really work well.

This isn't worth the trouble. Find an alternative to tetracycline antibiotics.

Pros:

Easy to use every day, works really well at controlling big acne, not so much on the everyday stuff but it really does work

Cons:

Can't see any, i get no sickness or any other side effects. As regards sun-sensitivity, it makes me tan unbelievably dark, not burnt.

Only thing is I swear I sometimes get memory loss after drinking on it! No, its not just the booze!!

Would recommend to anyone what have u got to lose, its so easy to use! Used inconsistently over 5 years, when i came off it its not that great a shock. Back on it again now

Pros:

I just started developing cystic acne at age 44. Things improved after 1 week i.e. the inflamed cysts I had started shrinking away instead of getting increasing inflamed for weeks.

Cons:

you can't take antibiotics indefinitely.

i'veied benzoyle peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, tretinoin, azelaic acid, but only the antibiotics have worked and it is relatively inexpensive.

Pros:

Works very well. Once you find out what time you should take it. Take it at that time exactly and keep it in your system.

Cons:

Makes skin very burn sensitive even long time after quitting. MAKE SURE TO DRINK WITH WATER. WASH IT DOWN. YOU CAN GET AN ULCER!

Clears acne but youll get burns. I dont know...

Pros:

The only good thing about this medicine is that it works for a few months

Cons:

I have been on doxy for almost a year now, it worked for me for about 5 months and my acne is starting to come back. I read that once you stop taking doxy or become immune, that there is a high chance your acne will come back worse than before.

It is nice to have clear skin for a while, but it is definitely not worth taking due to the fact that once you stop taking this medication, you have to deal with the pain all over again. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless they have tried everything with no results, and if you do decide to take doxy, I really hope that everything works out okay. I have never missed a dose and have alway tried to take it the same time every day. I started with 100mg twice a day now I am trying to wein myself off of it because my acne started coming back, now I am taking 50mg twice a day.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
