Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

-Reduces swelling
-Clearing skin
-Prevents new cysts

Cons:

-Doesn't reduce redness much
-Doesn't prevent little whiteheads

So basically, I am obsessed with clearing my skin right now. I moved to New York City from my small little town in South Jersey this past summer. When i moved here, my skin had been almost completely clear, the clearest it had ever been since I was 14 years old. When I was 14 I started getting whiteheads all over my jawline down to my neck and up to my lips. It started clearing up this spring and by summer it was almost perfect I only had a few almost completely faded scars. It was clear for the whole summer and then in September I had the worst breakout in my entire life. My forehead, which probably only has had 3 whiteheads in my entire life, grew one big cyst over my right eyebrow. About a week after that, seriously like 10 grew all over my forehead. Then it just continually got bigger and worse and redder and they hurt so bad it felt like they were pressing against my skull. So after about a month and a half of just trying to get rid of it with the face wash I had always been using, nothing had happened it was now just slowly getting worse. So I went to a dermatologist and he prescribed me Doxycycline Monohydrate 150MG, Tazorac (Tazarotene) 0.05% cream, and Clindamycin Phosphate Topical Solution 1%. I also started taking daily omega 3 pills and multivitamins. The combination of all of this has improved my skin so much. However, my skin still looks terrible and it's really embarassing. My cysts are nearly all gone the few that I have are so lowered they don't even look like cysts anymore, btu there are still quite a few on my forhead. I also started getting a few whiteheads on my chin and cheeks. Not that many but they are still annoying. My doctor said it would take about 3 weeks to start working and it did. Even though my skin still looks bad, it is improving so much people have noticed and complimented me on how much better it looks. I'm hoping at this rate it will be almost completely gone by New Year's, and I really think it will be. I highly r

Antibiotics are the devil and set me up for an acne disaster. Go natural to get clear!
I've struggled with moderate acne off and on for years. I've tried everything - proactiv (worked for a few years), laser treatments, chemical peels, minocycline, doxycycline, basically I've been around the acne/skin care block! I have an old review that is fairly positive on doxy. It worked. I cleared up. My skin got worse and then I started taking a double dose. I was on antiobiotics fairly daily for about two years and I was fairly pleased with the results. Then I got pregnant. And I wasn't able to take doxy anymore. Skin was great until my third trimester when I started getting bumps all over my chin and down my neck. I was reacting to everything I put on my skin. The doctors said it would get better once the baby was born. It didn't. It got a MILLION TIMES WORSE. I developed dozens of painful cystic/almost rash like acne all around my mouth and all over my chin. It was attributable to breastfeeding hormones. For pictures check out [link removed]. I've now cleared up my skin by ditching the antiobiotics completely (my doctor put me on tetracycline for the latest blow up but I couldn't fill the prescription), and going the natural and holistic route. Candida cleanses and anti-fungals are my new best friend and after a few months of clean eating, a few week long candida cleanses, taking fermented cod liver oil and drinking fresh milk kefir like it's going out of style, I have beautiful, glowing skin with minimal breakouts. As I have the best skin when I'm limiting my sugar intake and doing full blown candida cleanses, I'm convinced antibiotics destroyed all of my good gut bacteria that yeast and my hormones/liver started wreaking havoc on my skin. Please, throw out the doxy and find a naturopath to help heal your gut and get some good bacteria growing. You will not regret it. It isn't an easy fix going the natural/diet and skincare route, but it will give you beautiful skin in the long run and help you gain control over your skin and life. Heal yourself from the inside.

Pros:

- Works fast.
- Inexpensive with my insurance.

Cons:

- Makes skin dry and flaky but moisturizing can fix that.

I'm 22 and I've had acne since the age of 15. In the last three years it has gotten so severe that I decided to see a dermatologist. He put me on 150 mg of this once a day. It's been over two weeks and I am floored by the results so far. I have cystic acne and nothing has ever worked for my face before. I have a couple of bumps on my jawline and everything else is clear. Pimples that would normally take weeks to heal are gone in two days.

Pros:

-Cleared up acne
-After I discontinued use the acne stayed away
-Tiny pill

Cons:

-Made me feel sick to my stomach
-The pill is very strong (100 mg) and it actually got lodged in my throat and I got pill esophagitis from it. Basically, it kind of burned the lining of my esophagus and made it excruciating to eat or drink for a week and a half. (The pill is tiny, I just have the worst luck in the world...)
-Slow to work

When I got prescribed this it was because I was having really painful cystic acne on my chin. It took about a month for the pills to work but once they did I was so happy. I was given four months of refills but after two months I stopped taking it because my acne was gone. This isn't recommended but my acne never came back. Sure, I get a pimple every now and again, but no more cystic acne and I spend 90% of the time acne free. I would recommend eating a slice of bread or something of that nature before taking the pill because it made my stomach very upset to the point where I was on my knees in front of the toilet about a half hour after taking the pill (before I learned the bread trick), and I have a strong stomach. Try not to eat or drink dairy two hours before or after taking the pill because lactose hinders the abilities of the pill. Also, make sure that you drink a whole glass of water when you take this pill because, like I mentioned, it once got lodged in my throat and that was a horrible experience that could have been avoided if I had just had more water with it. I know that it sounds like a lot of trouble to go through for such a tiny pill but I can honestly say, despite all the turmoil that I went through, I would do it all over again because I know that the result is the flawless skin that I have today.

Its been exactly 13 weeks on this pill and i gotta say my pimples on my forehead has cleared up but they still keep coming back smaller ones then before. But this isn't good enough for clearing all of your acne, its ok for a period of time.

Doxy Saved My Life Guys
I would just like to say thank you to Doxy for saving my life. I have extreme depression and anxiety, and that was only made worse by my acne which covered almost all of my face and was spreading fast. I tried every over-the-counter medication, every face wash and even attempted laser therapy. I almost took Accutane, but heard the terrible stories online about how bad the side effects were and more. Even my doctor tried to convince me to take Accutane, but I'm here to say if you have horrible red blotchy acne that is very congested, please try Doxycycline. It took 3-4 months, and when I look in the mirror now I actually kind of want to cry because of how much it helped. Doxy + Spectro Blemish Cleanser & Moisturizer saved my life.

So pleased for you and your success! Are you still taking doxy?

Not to exaggerate, but it's miracle. For me.
I've been suffering from acne ever since I hit 12; which has been 10 years from since. I've tried so many things from topical creams to all sorts of drugstore treatments like anti-acne cleansers, gels, essential oils or exfoliating treatments which none has ever worked out for me. I've also changed my pillow cases more frequently and tried to drink green juices but they did very little and I still get red, bumpy and sometimes painful acne on random places (very less on the forehead). I also suffered from "textures" (I'm not sure how to call it) which are bumps appearing throughout my face and my body (chest and back). I tried to exfoliate these bumps almost on a daily basis, using chemical exfoliants or other physical methods like (Japan - Cure gel, Body Shop's exfoliating shower gloves for my body, St. Ives exfoliating scrub cleanser) but they seemed to only work temporarily and then come back even faster and did nothing to my condition. So, my friend one day took me to a dermatologist for a free consultation, and I was skeptical of it as I've tried so many things that I've already given up and submitted myself to concealers and facial powders to cover up my destroyed skin. So I listened to the dermatologist and many of the things she mentioned I've already read online. Close to the end of the consultation she prescribed quite a number of products from their clinic and the antibiotics which is Doxycycline. All the products were too expensive for a poor student like me to afford and I already have my own skin care products so I did not purchase them. I went for the antibiotics which I have been taking for almost a month already since 23rd of April. So, during the first two weeks there weren't any significant changes to my acne condition. And closing to the third week I noticed my acne got better, I thought it was the "Exfolikate" Kate Somerville product sample I used that made my face better. But it wasn't, it was the doxy. I know for sure because the textures that have been haunting for me years, are slowly dying down. My back feels smoother, and every time I cleanse my face, it feels smoother and the textures were disappearing, I didn't even need my St. Ives scrubbing cleanser at all. I've returned to my home town and my mother said my face got so much better than before. I felt better too, although I still have a lot of discolored marks from the acne before, I am truly grateful for my almost clear skin. I no longer suffer from painful acne and textures. However, this is just a short-term quick take from taking the Doxycycline (100mg). I am planning to take this for about 6 months to ensure they don't come back. It costs me about USD 20 (MYR 80 in Malaysia) per 1 month dosage but it's so worth it. I usually spend over USD 30-40 a month to try out other products. Literally, miracle in a pill. Thank god (and science) for these pills. I'm now on my journey to clear these discolored marks (scars) and also finding solutions for my oily and huge pored face. Acne was my main problem and insecurity though! At least I didn't have to wear a lot of make up on my face already. (I'm a guy by the way, so I really felt girly whenever I put that much concealer on my face).

Pros:

clear skin

Cons:

can cause allergic reaction; not a long-term solution for acne.

i was on this for about 6 months. it worked really well and cleared up my acne. however, 6 months into it, i began to get really itchy bumps on my limbs that were huge. at first i thought it was an insect bite or bed bug, but i took some clarityn and the lumps and itchiness disappeared. that made me realise that i had become allergic to it. i also noticed from photographs that my skin had this yellow-jaundiced tint indicative of liver damage. once i came off it, my body returned to normal!! acne came back. bottom line - being on antibiotics is NOT a long term solution for acne!! acne will come back once u stop taking it and in the process u may cause a lot of internal damage!

Pros:

-Cleared up acne pretty quickly
-Easy to swallow

Cons:

-Nausea (If not taken with food, you can eventually end up vomiting)
-Extreme sun sensitivity
-Tiredness
-Mild depression (Not sure if this was the meds)
-Tingling in the hands and feet

It's a pretty good antibiotic due to the fact that it works pretty quickly and effectively. The only major problem i only had with it was that it caused pretty bad skin reactions and sensitivity. But all in all, it works pretty good.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
