Pros:

Cleared up acne
Cleared up some scars

Cons:

Stomach aches

I have been taking Doxycycline for about a month now and after a few days I could already tell a difference in my skin. I took it once on an empty stomach and I learned quickly to never do that again. I always take it after dinner with a complete glass of water and ever since I have not had any problems. Although, I have only been taking it for a month I furthered my research on the pill and learned the maximum amount of time to take this pill is only 4 months. After 4 months it wears off and acne (for the most part) will come back. Hope this helps!

Pros:

-Cleared up most of my acne
-Gave me a nice glow

Cons:

-Makes skin very dry.

I've been on Doxycycline for a few months now I used to have a small pimples on my cheeks and huge zits on my chin. I've been using Doxycycline for the oral and Differin for topical use, Doxycycline has a lot of complaints for making your stomach hurt, but it didn't with me unless I took with with milk or water. At first It sorta broke me out, but now in my third month it's cleared up my skin almost all I only have one zit on my chin and no pimples on my cheeks.

Pros:

-cleared up some of my acne (mostly on my chest and back)

Cons:

-made my stomach hurt, sometimes I couldn't handle it and would actually vomit

I was so gratefull to have my chest and back acne cleared up. However, this perscription made my stomach very upset. One time I accedently put one of these pills in the washer and it came out about 4 times the size it was originaly. This made me relize that this is what it was doing in my stomach. (No wonder it made me sick) It didnt clear up the acne on my face at all, but I guess it was nice to be able to wear low cut tops.

Pros:

cleared up neck and jawline acne

Cons:

makes me feel sick if taken without food (lightheaded, dissy)

for taking this pill everyday (I've been taking it for about 7 months) and the side effects gotten, this is not worth taking. I believe it stopped the huge cystic acne and controlled my face a little, but not enough to recommend this anti-biotic.

Pros:

none =(

Cons:

extreme nausea
(it definitely helps if you take it with dinner and drink a full glass of water with it--just DO NOT take it on an empty stomach!!!)

So, this pill didn't work for me. I've been breaking out a lot ever since I started taking ortho tri-cyclen lo, so I finally made a dermatologist appointment and this was the first pill he had me try. I took 100mg a day for a month and basically nothing happened. It didn't make my acne WORSE, which was good, but since it didn't help my skin, he started me on Minocyclen, which has so far been helping. Everyone reacts differently and there's no way to tell if an antibiotic will work until you try it, so although it didn't work for me, I'd still recommend trying it to see if it works for you. You can also usually get a free 2 week supply at Publix after you get the prescription, so that should save you some money =)

Pros:

None for me.

Cons:

-Didn't fix acne
-Thrush

This didn't work for me at all. It seems to work for some people, but I guess it depends on your body. I've tried it a few times with no success, and each time I started it again I would get an attack of thrush within 48 hours.

Pros:

It worked.
Had a card that lowered to cost to $25 for a perscription (30 pills = 1 month) otherwise it would have cost me $100 with my insurance.

Cons:

Big pill.
Had to take one everyday.

It worked well for me. I was only on it for a month to clear up my cyst. I'm also using ziana @ the PMs and duac in the AMs. I've been off Doxy for a month now and my acne has not returned.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
