- Clears up acne within a month
- Makes Your Skin Less Oily
- Removes acne everywhere

Cons:

- Can give you nausea if tooken on an empty stomach
- Does Dry Skin Out
- Acne comes back if you skip doses

I went to a dermatologist for the first time in my life about 2 1/2 months ago, I was 13 at the time, and 14 now. Ever since I was about 12 and entered the 6th grade, i started getting horrible, horrible skin. It used to be flawless, but then I (admittedly, but I ended those horrible habits) would not shower very often and let my hair grow in long, and all of this resulted in extremely severe oily hair and skin. And after about a year of the bad habits I ended up getting severe acne all over my body. I broke out everywhere on my face especially around the nose area and I got horrible acne everywhere on my back and chest, so bad I became insecure. Anyways, I stopped the bad habits in 7th grade and started showering on a regular basis, but by the end of 8th grade I was sick of the acne and decided to go to a derm. He prescribed me Doxycycline to take once daily plus epiduo and alcohal pads for the night. It could be the epiduo, but i'm convinced that Doxycycline has cleared up my skin fantastically. Relatives and family keep commenting on how flawless my face is looking. It really does the trick! Clears your face up if you don't have too bad of acne within about a week. And after a month it will be fabulous! I still have pretty bad acne on my back and chest except every week I check it's getting better and better slowly but surely. I do recommend this! But I do not recommend skipping doses. I accidently due to financial troubles missed a dose and face started breaking out horribly.

Pros:

- Cheap.
- Easy to take (small, no taste etc.).

Cons:

- Only works for a short length of time.
- Increases skins sensitivity.

In the first few months of taking Doxy there were amazing results. People were noticing the differences in my skin then when the 8 - 9th month began, i started getting moderately severe breakouts on my cheeks and chin. They've now moved down one side of my face and slightly down to my neck. My skins began getting as bad as it was before, if not worse.

Pros:

-Convenience
-Some clearing of acne while taking it
-Cheap

Cons:

-Most of my acne still remained during and after treatment
-Acne got SIGNIFICANTLY worse after I stopped taking it

I was on doxycycline for several months. I suppose I could've given it more time, but my doctor took me off of it. I'm now on minocycline, which isn't working either. Doxycycline cleared a minimal amount of my acne, but it got rid of the smaller blemishes and did little for my cystic acne. After I stopped taking it, my acne became primarily cysts and I have many more of them. My skin is the worst it's ever been. I have less blemishes than while I was in high school, but it's almost all cysts now (age 23), which I rarely had then. I said I wouldn't recommend that, but all I meant by that was it did not help me at all. I expect that people have very different experiences with antibiotics for acne.

Pros:

Cleared every bit of acne from my face and body, Never had any side effects.

Cons:

Acne does tend to come back when you stop taking it.

My dermatologist prescribed this to me in March, my acne was gone by May. I was so happy that something finally worked. I had really severe acne, but now I barely have any. I stopped taking it because you're really not supposed to take it for that long and the acne on my face hasn't come back. But on my body it has :/ I think this is because I control the acne on my face with acanya and finacea, but don't use anything on my shoulders or back. But doxycyline really worked for me, and I'm grateful for it. I also didn't have to pay a dime for it because my insurance covered it.

Temporarily clears

Pros:

-Cleared my skin completely within 2 months
-Made my skin less oily
-Reduced the occurrence of big pustules

Cons:

-Takes a while to see results (2 months for me)

Doxy completely cleared up my skin and has made it look way better than it has in years. I also use Epiduo at night, but I'm convinced that Doxy is what has improved my skin so much. Within 2 months, I saw significant improvement in my acne, and from there on I only saw more. Now, I am completely clear, and if I ever do get pimples they are extremely small whiteheads. I still get a pustule maybe once every two months or so. I am very happy with what Doxy has done for me. EDIT one year later: I still think Doxy got me out of one of the worst breakouts of my life, however, it did stop working after about 5 months of use. Basically, this only temporarily clears the skin, but sometimes you need that extra boost.

Pros:

Within the first two weeks of taking this antibiotic I noticed a substantial difference in my skin, especially on my shoulders and back. More breakouts didn't occur. My scarring seems to be fading as well and I'm in my second month of treatment.

Cons:

Cam disrupt good bacteria.. I would eat yogurt to help with this. Haven't had any stomach issues since.

Great antibiotic for moderate to severe breakouts. My routine also follows using neutrogena grapefruit body wash and grapefruit exfoliating cleanser for the face. I also moisturize with neutrogena oil free moisturizer with SPF 15.. I have not experienced any dryness on the skin from using these products. To also help with my back issues they prescribed me an antibacterial foam which is also helping. The cost is my copay based on insurance.

Pros:

1) stop me getting big painful ance sores
2) did moderately control ance
3) easy to take

Cons:

1)made skin very sensitive, resulting on itchy sores on my thighs
2)made skin much worse as soon as you miss doses
3)sunburn easily :(

I had moderately bad ance, took doxycycline for nearly 2 years, and it did work quite well for the first year or so, however my ance never cleared up. Stopped for one month to see if it was causing the itchy little sores on my thighs.. it was.. But went back on since my ance became terrible again. But even on it I would still become covered in ance and recieve the odd big painful under-the-skin pimple once a month. Basically I think this treats the wrong cause for my ance personally. Overall, it worked but not well enough. I've recently stopped taking it and plan on going to the docter to try something new, and I actually believe my skin is now worse than it ever was. And I've only been off it for a few days...

Pros:

Clears Acne Really Well.

Cons:

About 2-3 Weeks Into the process, It will make acne worse due to the fact the it kills all the acne bacteria and the bacteria has to get out somehow.

It works, just have to be willing to go through the first month.

Pros:

I have not had any side effects that others have complained off.

Cons:

I'm still breaking out

I've been on Doryx for about 3 weeks and I am still breaking out. Maybe I need to wait a bit longer but I was expecting better results. I always take it with a meal, so I wonder if this is inhibiting the effectiveness of the pill.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
