Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Didn't do a whole lot at first but reduced the amount of acne by a little. I was hoping for a more drastic change, but it did help a little.

Cons:

Don't ever take it on an empty stomach.

It works for some people, but it doesn't completely clear away acne.

Pros:

Havent seen much i guess. Ive been on it only for two weeks so im still waiting for results. I take it with food and water. On the bottle it says to take WITH food.

Cons:

for the first week had tummy aches and needed to go to the bathroom often. Now that im used to it its calming down

Ive had acne since 13. Its moderate, i have a few big red pimples but mostly small bumps which have increased since ive started the medication. I use it with differen which is 0.1% which i was given by a doctor. Idk if the differen gave it to me or not. The results i get with differen is that when i put it on a pimple one night the next day it wont have a yellow head but will still be there, i think differen slows it down and stops it while its growing, however the red bump is still there and painful. Im taking one tablet a day 100mg and im on it for 3months. hopefully il get results or i'll go onto roaccutane yay :)

Pros:

Convenient package; cheap; easy to swallow

Cons:

Doesn't work

I only used the product for a week and I know that I should have been more patient with it.... but it didn't do anything for me. I initially had side effects of an upset stomach, but by day 3 of the medicine it was better.

Pros:

Made my acne on my chin go away

Cons:

I get nauseous if I took it and waited too long to eat something. Also, my hands and arms have been very tingly. My skin was also sensitive to the sun

I would use this to get rid of acne. I have used other antibiotics that havent worked as well as this one. I'm very stressed with school right now, and it is keeping my acne away

Pros:

* My scars look better
* Slightly smaller pores
*Fewer whiteheads

Cons:

* Super dry lips ( I have to apply Vaseline like 10 times a day, because my normal Chapstick isn't moisturizing enough)
* Still bad breakouts ( only been using it for 4 days though)
* My face is red all the time

I've tried like 6 or 7 over the counter products, & my acne still looked horrible. So I head to a derm & she gives me doxy, cetaphil, atralin, & alcohol pads. I haven't seen a big improvement, but it hasn't been very long. The pill is shaped oddly & was slightly hard to shallow ( or is that just me?).

Pros:

-I had clear skin for a couple of months
- Controled my oily skin

Cons:

- made me want to throw up if I took on an empty stomach
- Stopped working after awhile

I have never had clearer skin than when I was on Doxycycline, however, after about a year it stopped working for me because I became immune to it. :(

Pros:

Really cleared up acne.

Cons:

Depression is BAD.

I like feeling happy and the bottom line is that I would rather have a few breakouts than feel like i want to kill myself. Doxy made me very very depressed. Hope to feel like myself again.

Pros:

Not sure

Cons:

Not sure

I am 13 and i got 2 acne on my cheeks and some small ones at my forehead and a few bumps on my cheeks too. I went to the doctor today and she prescribed doxycycline for me and said it works best for teens with moderate acne. Today i took my first pill and expierienced nothing at all. No stomaches and whatsoever. Hoped that helped my acne. Meanwhile for acne sufferers out there, its good to eat at least a fruit everyday and more veggies instead of meat. Drink PLENTY of water as that helps for me! My pimples aon my forehead are not as sore as before (: Just have to work on that cheeks part.... ):

Pros:

Started clearing up my face a little now. But slowly.
Cheap!

Cons:

Takes a lot of time. I'm on it for 3 weeks now and very little improvement so far. My Dr told me it will take about 2 months to kick in.
Big breakout in the first week. (Still suffering from this one)

I dont know what people do wrong. The package clearly states to take it with/after a meal and the dr AND the chemist also told me to do so. I never had an upset stomach because of it. My acne went from light acne to moderate severe acne after taking it for a week. Now it's about to be light moderate acne. I see improvement day by day. I hope there will be some more improvement in the coming weeks.

Cons:

Naseau

I've only used it for one day and for one hour following I had naseau. Will wait longer to see if it works

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
