Pros:

Less hungry (?)
Easy to take

Cons:

Taking w/ just water makes me groggy for a little while

Although I've read about the nausea that Doxy can give, my Derm put me on 50mg twice daily and it hasn't given me the problems others have had. I've only been taking it for less than a week in conjuction w/ Sodium Sulfacetamide lotion 10% at night and Clindamycin 1% topical in the morning. Now at the end of the 4th day I can see a difference - the giant red eruptions have stopped and the ones already there (lower half of my face) are now shrinking rapidly. The upper half of my face that is already clear is beginning to take on a nice texture - a glow perhaps? This combination appears to be working nicely for me - a 31 yr old female with lengthy acne history now due mostly to hormones.

Pros:

-Gets rid of acne
-Easy to swallow
-Easy to break

Cons:

-Can upset your stomach at first
-Can be costly
-Can't take it forever
-Doesn't help scarring

I love this anti-biotic acne treatment. I had acne since 5th grade and in my junior year of high school my parents brought me to the dermatologist and this is what she prescribed me. After just a couple months I was only getting a couple breakouts and eventually my acne disappeared (even though I still got/get regular zits every once in a while). It affected my stomach at first, but you adjust. My dermatologist paired this with Epiduo though, since you can't take this forever. I had to go back on it after a summer of stress and dirt too, and it worked again. I think the combo works beautifully, and now I am now working on my scarring. The pills are easy to break in half when you're weaning off of it. The cost can be annoying but ask your derm for the card they make to make the cost lower. All in all I highly recommend it, just be careful when it comes to your stomach.

Pros:

-Cleared up pores on my cheeks
-Acne has somewhat cleared

Cons:

-HOLY SH*T YOU BETTER EAT THIS WITH FOOD

I made a mistake eating this without food one day and I literally felt like I was going to die. Maybe I am over dramatic but dear it was awful, anyway, I used to have moderate acne and I went to a dermatologist who gave me Doxycycline and Aczone together with lemon juice they are going fairly well for me except for that time of the month. It's kind of cheap I guess, compared to the price of the Aczone it's great. I've been using it for about 2 1/2 months and I'm seeing pretty all right results, It hasn't made me break out anymore so that's good

Pros:

-prevents new acne
-skin is not as red and inflamed
-small pill

Cons:

none.

i've been taking this for almost a month and it has improved my skin a lot. i don't get as much acne anymore, i just get a couple pimples every once in a while. probably in a couple months, my skin will be clear. i've been using it with tretinoin cream, which makes an even bigger difference. people say that doxycycline makes them sick, but my dermatologist told me to take it with food, so i haven't had any side effects at all. i recommend it to anyone that suffers from moderate to severe acne. the only problem is that after a while your body becomes used to it so it won't work anymore so you have to get something stronger.

Pros:

-Cleared up most of my acne
-Gave me a nice glow

Cons:

-Makes skin very dry.

I've been on Doxycycline for a few months now I used to have a small pimples on my cheeks and huge zits on my chin. I've been using Doxycycline for the oral and Differin for topical use, Doxycycline has a lot of complaints for making your stomach hurt, but it didn't with me unless I took with with milk or water. At first It sorta broke me out, but now in my third month it's cleared up my skin almost all I only have one zit on my chin and no pimples on my cheeks.

Pros:

It worked.
Had a card that lowered to cost to $25 for a perscription (30 pills = 1 month) otherwise it would have cost me $100 with my insurance.

Cons:

Big pill.
Had to take one everyday.

It worked well for me. I was only on it for a month to clear up my cyst. I'm also using ziana @ the PMs and duac in the AMs. I've been off Doxy for a month now and my acne has not returned.

Pros:

Cleared up acne
Helped with hyperpigmentation

Cons:

Made me really nauseated

I took 2 pills a day for my acne to jump-start the clearing process. I would take it in the day and get a lot of nausea. But it really helped me in the end and now my face looks clearer.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
