Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

Worked fast, now 95% clear.

Cons:

Have to take it with food, but not dairy.

It made my skin smoother and clearer in days. Take with loads of water and eat healthier. Try to take it the same time each day. If you take it twice a day try to take it at 12 hour increments, as it will work at its best that way. I use it with jojoba oil, and my skin has NEVER been better. Try it =) and good luck!

Pros:

Works pretty well and it's very affordable. Definitely worth wut you pay for.

Cons:

When taking it, don't forget to drink lots of water and take it with a good meal. It could upset your stomach.

Cleared up my severe acne pretty quickly. Just take good care of yourself when you're on the drug.

Pros:

I just started taking this medication a few days ago. So far so good.

Cons:

If I don't eat something with this medication it gives me pretty bad acid reflux. I've also noticed that my hands and arms are very sensitive to the cold.

I'm hoping this will work. I'm also using in with clindamycin phosphate and tretinoin gel. We'll see.

Pros:

Cheap, Easy to use.

Cons:

I have been on doxycycline for 7 weeks now and have seen little improvement. I even used it in conjunxtion with benzoyl peroxide but have experienced litle progress. I have mild acne and am very frustrated by the lack of results that i am seeing.

I recommend this product to everyone with an acne problem. It works for some but not for others. If there are no results after 9 weeks i suggest you move on to another medication. It may be time for accutane for me.....

Pros:

has made me constipated for a long time

Cons:

works perfectly. clears me up 110%.

i dont understand why so many people complain about this. this has worked wonders for my skin, honestly it clears me up 110% and i love it! although i really have to stress that once you start taking it, especially towards the end of your course, DO NOT GET LAZY with it because the most resitant and persistant strains of bacteria are left at that time and it you dont take it as directed that bacteria will multiply and your acne will just come straight back ten fold and it will be much more difficult to treat. the only side effect i got from this was being constipated for over a year and a half after taking this but i still recomend it!

Pros:

It works well for about a year, clearing skin completely!

Cons:

Alas it doesn't last and things get worse.

Effective for the first year: even coming off them for a further half year with no return. However, into the following year without taking any medication, the acne returns a little worse. I am now going to go to my doctor to try Retin-A, which my siter and mum had years ago and they have no problems with their skin at all! Fingers crossed! Good luck everyone!

Pros:

Cleared up acne within a month. Acne free for 5 years. People with clear skin even commented they wished they had skin like mine! Affordable

Cons:

Nausea if taken on empty stomach. Cannot take with milk.

I had really bad acne when I was 13 on my face and back and this really worked for me. It cleared up all my acne within a month. I took it for 5 years because I was afraid my acne will come back again and during that time, my skin was as soft and smooth like a baby and I never need to wear make-up at all. My friends who had clear skin even said they wish they had skin like mine!I never had any side effects with the drug even sun sensitivity maybe because I always apply sunscreen and I never go sun tanning. However recently I seem to have breakout again. I think the acne has become resistant to the drug. I'm trying minocycline now. But this drug really works! Its a wonder pill for me for the last 5 years because I was acne free! Highly recommended!

Pros:

It is affordable

Cons:

It broke my face out and left me with perioral dermatitis

It did not work at all!!!!

Pros:

The doxycycline began to work pretty quickly for me, without any side effects except for nausea if it was take on an empty stomach.

Cons:

None

I've been off of doxycycline for about 3 months and my skin has remained perfectly clear. I've been maintaining it with clindoxyl (benzoyl peroxide solution) during the day (with sunscreen), and retin-A at nights.
March 21, 2007

Pros:

It did work on my skin. It has been noticeably smoother after like 2-3 weeks usage.

I'm still on it, and it's lessened more and more. Now I have scars and I hope it removes those too.

Cons:

MAJOR stomache aches after a while. They really hurt after a while.

Though it could be the other painkillers I take because I just had oral surgery. But stomach aches have been worse after taking those extra painkillers.

Overall, it's pretty good. Cost me about $60 for... 60 pills. Wonder if it's worth it with all the stomach aches. I still recommend it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
