Acne.org’s Real World Take
Antibiotics should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provide only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria. Studies do show doxycycline can reduce severe acne in the short term, and as far as oral antibiotics are concerned, it’s usually the go-to, but approach with caution and stay your own advocate.

Pros:

No new pimples, no cyst and saw results w/in the first week.

Cons:

Made me nautious if I took it w/out food.

It works if your on this and take it accordingly. I'm very afraid that I'm going to have to take this forever. I'm looking for a resolution to where I won't have to take medication EVER or daily for for my acne. So far I've been on it for about two weeks and it works great. My birth control could also have something to do with my face not breaking out. I'll have to see. My derm said that we will try to see if my face still breaks out after I stop taking them and that's what I'm nervous about. I hope my body doesn't go immune to it. Good luck!

Pros:

none

Cons:

very sensitive to sun

I haven't noticed any improvement in my acne since starting doxycycline. I have severe fluctuations, some times my skin looks pimple free, others it it quite bad. However it was like that before doxycycline so i believe it to be ineffective.

Pros:

Doesnt have any

Cons:

First day i used it, i broke out like crazy red blocthes on my skin more sore pimples and extremly dry skin, the more i used it the more my skin got worse. I used to have only a few pimples that i was worried about and now im regreting geting on this

Its made my skin worse and ugly and now i dont want to step foot outside of the house, make-up doesnt even help thats how bad it is. Everyone said it will clear up within a week and it hasnt done anything like that.

Pros:

clears up acne within 3 months, makes pimples smaller

Cons:

during the summer and warmer months it gets a little worse due to imflammation, makes skin super sensitive to sun, creates temporary scarring, you still breakout around period, stomach pains have occurred

i am extremely thankful for how well it clears up acne- it seems to be good for the skin; i dislike the breakout periods and how my skin is sensitive to sun and scarring occurs. i thought i liked this product until i saw how many cons were verses pros. now im not so sure i want to be on this medication anymore although i have gotten compliments from people saying my acne cleared up really good and my skin is way better than it was and if i wasn't on it i can't even imagine how bad it would be.

Pros:

face cleared up a it, but my back still continnues to break out bad

Cons:

stomach pain......eh, and nausea,intense sunburns

I've used this medicine for a couple of months. my skin cleared up a bit, but not as good as i would like. i think im going to try to switch to birth control or something else. its not worth the stomach problems anymore.

Pros:

I have not seen any results yet but hoping to see some soon. All I get is more breakouts but I heard it takes time to work.

Cons:

For the first couple of days it gave me an upset stomach but now I'm okay with that.

The doctor said wait 3 months for results and hoping to see them.

Pros:

Reduced inflammation on my face. but the acne is pretty much the same amount. I was recommended to use it twice a day with DUAC right before i go to sleep and both these meds together made a slight but not much of an improvement

Cons:

Felt sick to my stomach at time

Eh if your acne is light it wont hurt to try. Moderate or above dont bother

Pros:

Oral

Cons:

It has made my acne worse than it's ever been before!!

I have only been on doxy for about 8 days, but my acne has noticably gotten worse every day that I've been on it. I originally went into the derm for some mild acne on my neck, check and a little on my upper back. Since I've been on the drug, it has multiplied. It has spread down my back and onto my face. I haven't had acne like this in 10 years! After reading some info, I understand that in some patients it gets worse before it gets better, but I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to hang in for this one....

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
