Pregnancy

Doxycycline is generally not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to the developing baby, including effects on tooth and bone development.

However, some studies suggest that short-term use in early pregnancy may not pose a significant risk. For instance, a small study reported normal outcomes for infants exposed to doxycycline during the early first trimester.

Nonetheless, data on long-term use during pregnancy are lacking. It is essential to consult a healthcare provider to weigh the benefits and risks before using doxycycline while pregnant.

Breastfeeding

Doxycycline is excreted in human milk, but the level of absorption of doxycycline by the breastfed infant is not known.

Short-term use by lactating women is not necessarily contraindicated, however, the effects of prolonged exposure to doxycycline in breast milk are unknown.

Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from doxycycline, a woman and her doctor should make a decision whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
