Pros:

Has somewhat cleared up my skin so far and controlled breakouts.

Cons:

itchy skin. Dry/flakey skin. very expensive!

I've been on Differin 3% for the past 2 weeks now and found that it has given me good results. I haven't been breaking out as much as I usually do. 1st week though, I got 3 zits that showed up but don't know if they were a result of Differin or were already presently growing under my skin before going on Differin. Anyhow, they are gone and so far I haven't gotten any major out breaks while on Differin 3%. Could be temporary of course with my luck but I'll keep it going since I believe it is working for me so far. Differin 3% is very expensive $150+!! I've considered going on Differin 1% as this cost considerably less but I'm torn with the good results I've gotten so far with the 3%. I guess it comes down what really matters most. Having clear skin...priceless??

Pros:

It really reduces inflammation. When new spots come out (which is rare) they calm down three times as quickly as they used to and do not swell up, or develop big heads. Very comfortable and easy to apply. No burning sensation.

Cons:

Slight dryness during first week. A bit of burning around eyelids. Cream takes 30 mins to dry properly.

Great product. My acne has improved dramatically since I began using it. I am also using antibiotics, though. I find that when I apply it, my acne improved dramatically by the next morning. My skin did not become very dry or red and the little dryness that came about during the first week settled down fast.

Pros:

skin is nearly acne free, decreases pore size, improves skin texture, fades acne marks with time

Cons:

takes a while to show results, skin gets worse before it gets better

During the first few weeks of using Differin my skin worsened and I had more acne than I initially did. It was not only the acne I had to deal with, but the many dark marks left behind on my cheek and forehead. After about 2 months though, this product did show results and they were great! Now my skin is dramatically smoother, brighter, and more vibrant. I still get a pimple once in a while but this stuff has been a miracle for me! I cant wait till it completely fades away all my acne scars.

Pros:

is clearing it up! NO irritation or drying AT ALL. nice, smooth, clear consistency. helps with red marks. tube lasts a very long time.

Cons:

takes time. feels tight on skin for about 30 minutes after application.

I've been using Differin for about a month. At first my skin appeared to be clearing up, but then all hell broke lose. Thankfully this cleared up mostly in the first 2 weeks, but my skin was still a little worse than when I started. At the begining of the 4th week, i got bunches of clogged pore "bumps" on my forehead. But it's only the middle of week 4 and they are already clearing up leaving very smooth, nice, LESS OILY skin. My chin is still how it normally is, but it is less oily and appears to be clearing up. I think I'll give this another month and hopefully I will continue to improve!! I started off using it just twice a week, but I've bumped my usage up to once a day (at night) and I've had NO drying or irritation at all. And my skin IS sensitive. =D

Pros:

for me...low irritation, gel is a nice consistency. Dramatically improved skin.

Cons:

expensive, occasional trouble with peeling and burning but nothing major. takes a long time to work

I'm 27 and have used this for 6 months now. I saw some major improvement around 3-4 months, but I have seen a dramatic change in my skin over the last couple of weeks. It has really made my skin texture really nice, and my face is bright and vibrant looking. My pores are small. And I rarely break out anymore. I recommend this product but IT TAKES TIME. You have to be VERY patient with retinoids. Expect an increase in acne at first but eventual clearing. You will probably not see much change for the first 3 months.

Pros:

My skin i still not clear but it definitely improves the dark spots left by previous acne (i saw result of this in about 2 weeks)

Cons:

None so far

The first week, my skin actually started improving dramatically!! and then in ONE Night---i dont know what on earth happened and i woke up with unbelievably crinlkly skin with little bumps everywhere. Sinc then my skin has gotten back to its normal texture although it took about 2 weeks. I still have a bunch (i would say around 30) of tiny bumps on my forehead...However I am going to be patient and give this product 2 more months! Regimen (ordered by my dermatologist): Night - Clyndamycine solution -Differin XP Day -Clyndamycine solution -BP 10%

Pros:

I used to get terrible hard and painful pimples on my t-zone and since using Differin Cream I never get them anymore. My skin is much smoother and the old acne scars have faded.

Cons:

It dries your skin if it is used too often. My skin is fairly sensitive so I only use it at night. You need to experiment with the cream to make it work with your skin type. Many people who are saying it's not working may be using it too often.

I have had acne since I was about 13. I tried Proactiv, over the counter creams, etc. and nothing really seemed to work. I finally was fed up with dealing with acne so at 22 I went and saw a dermatologist who prescribed Differin. It is worth every penny. My skin is completely clear and much smoother. I only get pimples around my cycle and I never get the hard, cystic type pimples anymore. It probably took 2-3 weeks for me to see significant results. I have pretty sensitive skin so I only apply it at night. I also apply benzoyl peroxide in the mornings on the occasional pimple. I never used to feel confident walking around with no make-up but now my skin is so clear I don't care.

Pros:

Worked better than expected! Used differin at night (alternated with AHA 15 night cream) and duac in the morning. Now I just have to deal with the dark spots left by old acne.

Cons:

Initial breakout - about 2 cysts and a few smaller ones

After two months, no more cystic acne! Dramatic difference.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
