Pros:

Clears skin with minimal irritation (compared to retin-a or benzol peroxide).

Cons:

Takes several months to achieve results, major breakouts the first few weeks of use which is frustrating.

Differin is very effective and cheap with a prescription. However, it takes several months to achieve clear skin. The first several weeks my skin was covered in pimples. This was very frustrating and I felt defeated. My derm told me it would take 8 weeks to see results, so I stuck with it. Now I have clear skin. The people who have given Differin poor marks, are generally people who gave up after a week or two. With Differin, you need to be patient. Another plus is that Differin is less irritating that benzol peroxide and retin-a, I didn't experience the extreme redness and irritation that I did with those products.

Pros:

You can feel the medication on you, so you know if you put enough on and all that. You can feel a tightness to your skin and it just feels really good to have on. Noticed effects pretty fast.

Cons:

I havent found any cons with this medication yet. No peeling or anything for me.

I would recommend this so far. Ive had it for a couple of weeks, and its pretty effective to what i can see. Im using this alongside doxycycline which is an amazing medicine which ive been using for about a year, maybe longer. Definately recommend this combination.

Pros:

Worked fast on the pimples already present and cleared the ones starting to emerge.

Cons:

I really can't find any other than the fact it's not an over-the-counter med and you need a prescription.

Fantastic on hormonally challenged 40-something skin and trust me, I've tried everything. Doesn't turn me red and peely like Retin-A which is a huge PLUS. I can see good results overnight and used on a continual basis with Cleocin-T (antibiotic topical), I have virtually no break outs whatsoever. Added bonus for older skin is it works on wrinkles, too. LOVE THAT!

Pros:

Cons:

takes a long time to work, but it works it!!!

Ok, the derma told me that i have to use this prodcut for 6 months to see results, i was like, ok, because before i have tried everything even things that you can't imagine. I had acne for 12 years it really gets down your selfsteem, you don't know why that is happening to you. So, I sataring to use differin and benzac 5% since december and from a month ago my skin is totally clear, more clean and whiter, i'm really happy with this i never thought it'd work i have lost faith, I recommend 100% this 2 products and have patience, roma wasn't built in a day :)

Pros:

Works great and gets rid of acne.

Cons:

None

After switching from Benzaclin this has been great. It works even better if you take 5 grams of B5 a day with Differin. I use Differin at night and Clindamycin in the morning.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
