A way of using benzoyl peroxide in combination with the topical retinoid, adapalene, that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. Comes with side effects for the first weeks and can bleach fabric. Note: When used correctly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin.

Pros:

cleared up my skin perfectly after about a week

Cons:

my face was horribly dry the first 2 weeks and it stopped working after a few months.

I guess its a good thing to try, but it became ineffective. As a 'sample' I got a normal sized tube free from my Dermatologist, so I'm not sure how much it costs.

It does work!
If you're reading this you might wanna know whether Epiduo is effective or not, right? Lemme first give you a background on my acne, I started suffering from it when I was in highschool then it got worse until this year. I tried every way possible to cure it, from regular facial, chemical peel, iontophoresis to taking isotretinoin(which is the generic name for Accutance), they did treat my acne but only for a while. Then I came back to my dermatologists and he recommended me Epiduo, I'm like you who's skeptical on trying it because it 'might' not help again BUT when I read all the positive reviews on Epiduo here in acne.org I've decided why don't I give this a try. So for 14 weeks now I've been applying this wonder, my face is 90% clear with acne marks though. Together with Epiduo, I wash my face with Cetaphil and cold guava tea, then rub banana peel 3x a day for 30 minutes and serum. For those of you who's on the verge of giving up on this product please don't, be patient and positive. 😊

YOU AREN'T ALONE!!! DON'T GIVE UP!!
I can't believe I'm writing a review. After Almost 7 years of struggling with my skin and reading what feels like millions of reviews and trying many products to clear my skin I am hoping (fingers crossed) that I have finally found THE cure. This feels a bit surreal to be honest, I can't tell you how many times I have read peoples success stories and just wished so badly that one day it would be me. Don't get me wrong, if you're struggling with bad skin these forums are a GODSEND when you need hope to keep searching for answers and to remind yourself you aren't alone, cause sometimes you feel like you're the only person with bad skin. When my skin took a turn for the worst a few months ago (the most horrible breakout I'd ever experienced) I promised myself that when i found something that would work, that I would make the most detailed review possible in hopes that I could help even just ONE person out there that has a similar struggle to mine. So apologies for the length but it has been a long road for me and I want to help someone else. Acne sucks. When I felt really disgusted over my skin I would try so hard to remind myself that things could be so much worse. I have my health, all my limbs, my eyesight, everything that a human needs to function properly. But damn no matter how hard I tried my bad skin just took over my ilfe.... I refused to be seen without makeup, constantly cancelled plans, could never enjoy being outdoors or going to the lake because I didn't want people to see my pimples/scars. My acne was mild (developed into moderate) and hormonal but left HORRIBLE pigmentation that left bright red marks that lasted forever.. I was even embarrassed to let my family see me without makeup which is pathetic but I was just embarrassed at how gross my skin looked. My breakouts were always hormonal (forehead and chin) but then my acne type changed and I was also developing DEEP blackheads that stayed there forever, and tons of clogged pores around my chin that eventually one by one turn into cysts (so painful and embarassing) I NEVER had acne growing up. My first pimple was at age 22. I've been the derm dozens of times in the last two years. Summer of 2013 I started Aczone and Atralin. Worked WONDERS for a few months and I felt relieved my battle with acne was over. Unfortunately though, those meds stopped working and my acne slowly creeped back and then it was worse than ever. I'll admit that I had a heightened level of stress recently that may have contributed to this horrible breakout but regardless, I was beyond over it and at the end of my rope and on the verge of losing my sanity. I was so tired of being self conscious and spending EVERY waking hour worrying about my face. It was exhausting. So In January of 2015 I went BACK to the derm to start over. He put me on duac. I cried because benzoyl peroxide had dried my face before and I knew it wouldn't work. Well, duac worked SOMEWHAT, removed a few blackheads but I was breaking out horribly around my chin while on it. Felt super discouraged. Then he put me on Finacea (for rosacea), which helped slightly at first, but my chin continued to breakout in horrible huge painful inflamed pimples. One would clear up then two-three more would pop up. I couldn't catch a break. I was in the derm what felt like every other day for cortisone injections. Finally he said well let's try epiduo since you had success at first with Atralin (a retin-a , and epiduo has bp AND a retinoid combined) I went home crying, knowing it wouldn't work. But realized I had no other option but to at least TRY it. I was scared, I was skeptical, I was a pessimist and knew it wouldn't work. I knew i was going to suffer more breakouts but I had to give it a shot. So I did. And let me tell you, all the reviews you read (try and only read good reviews) are so true. IT COMPLETELY SUCKS AT FIRST. I wish it didn't have to, but it just does. The first couple days I used it I had several of those red inflammed cystic pimples flare up on my chin. I wanted to cry (oh wait, I DID cry, a lot), but I decided to trust what people were saying and power through it. If you are able to go in for cortisone shots while you first start this product it at least helps the pain and for them to subside faster. Patience is key (easier said than done) but slowly but surely, I think I found what is going to work for me... blackheads and closed comedones on my forehead are slowly coming to the surface (I have been able to literally just pull a couple of them out) and I know that with consistent and persistent use they rest of them will clear up as well... It sucks purging but I can really tell it is clearing out all my gross clogged pores around my chin as well. It's only been a week, and I still have pimples purging and I know there is more to come, but I am SO much more hopeful realizing that this WILL pass and soon my skin will be clear.. My skin is dry and slightly peeling, but again, I'M PUSHING THROUGH IT AND YOU SHOULD TOO!!!. Fight through it!!!! Soooo many people have said that it's 100% worth it in the long run and to just keep focusing on the end result there IS a light at the end of the tunnel even if you don't see it :) I plan on updating every week or so with my progress. My skin is far from clear, but I can tell this is working. There is NO quick cure to acne no matter how bad we all wish there was one. So please give it a shot. OH and use it everyday, I didn't at first because I was scared of the dryness but every day is KEY. attack attack attack that bacteria!! MORNING: cetaphil gentle cleanser finacea oil of olay oiil-free fragrance free moisturizer NIGHT: oil of olay cleansing cloths- fragrance free/sensitive skin epiduo (SMALL amount on affected area) 30 min later oil of olay oil free fragrance free moisturizer DON'T GIVE UP HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all my fellow acne sufferers, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVE YOU!!!!

update: I am now starting my 11th week. WOW people! so glad I decided to stick it out.. it's really starting to take effect now. I was using this twice a day, but decided to re-incorporate my retin-a since I had so much luck with that before. So now I use epiduo in the morning and my atralin at night and it's working wonders. The big red inflamed cystic pimples have stopped popping up (FINALLY PRAISE THE LORD) and although I'm still sort of breaking out they are just tiny whiteheads here and there... no more painful pimples!! I can't wait to see what another few months of using this will bring. I still have hyper pigmentation and red marks but that stuff is much more tolerable than acne!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK FELLOW ACNE PEEPS! stay strong and push on through!!

amazing
Ok, so I wanted to write a review because of how amazing this product is. I honestly have tried it all, and tried nothing, and I kept breaking out for the past 6 months. I got on birth control, did facials, used expensive products and cheap ones, even home made stuff. What people aren't understanding is how to USE this product. FIrst, get something calming like cetaphil for your skin. Cleanse with that in the am and use sunscreen, NO MOISTURIZER. At night wash with cetaphil and let your skin dry at least 30 mins. I normally wait about an hour or two. USE a pea size amount and dab all over the face not to touch the delicate eye part or cracks of nose. GO TO BED. DO not use anything else. Start out by using every 3 days. The first night I let it work for 5 hours to see if I got a reaction. I haven't had ANY reactions. NONE. I have been using for 3 weeks and completely clear skin. I can't even believe it. I highly recommend this but with caution - do research and use it properly!

Pros:

Reduces acne fast (within hours for me)
Clear in a few days
Dries out skin

Cons:

None

Things to take into consideration...

Skin type: Fair, but doesn't burn/tan and isn't irritated easily. Prone to hyper-pigmentation, whether it be spots, a scratch, mosquito bite... you name it, a pink mark will be there for years

I have an auto-immune disease

I don't get much sun, so that also enabled me to apply a lot of Epiduo. When I was in the sun (winter also) I wore SPF of at least 25

Moisturize sporadically (once a week or less) with Olay Complet

I started using this about 6 months ago after having years of acne. I went on the pill about a year before and that cleared me up, apart from the odd hormonal spot. I had hyper-pigmentation left over from years before, and it still hadn't gone - or barely faded. Bought some make up and it broke me out. Bad. Had taken years for my hyper-pigmentation to fade and was back to square one. Pill couldn't control acne. Came off pill, got Epiduo. Epiduo... - Dries my face out, but I like this. I don't find it to be too drying at all. It's different for everyone, you just need to try it and adjust the amounts, or change your routine (add more moisturiser etc) accordingly. - Worked instantly, the next day my acne was reduced. - I was clear within a week. (And I really did have moderate to bad acne) - I have kept using it as I like the drying effect and I'm hoping it will help fade my hyperpigmentation (so that it will take months, rather than years this time) - Not sure whether there has been an improvement to my hyp-pig. Other people think so, I'm not sure How I used it... - I didn't use anything else. I don't take any vitamins, supplements or do anything else with my face. I don't even wash with soap. - I use a lot more than they recommend. I do this because my skin is pretty tough, and it didn't dry out or go red or sting like a lot of other people complain. If that does happen to you, then initially stop, and reduce amount used in the future. - Now I use it a few days on, and have breaks, I just add it to spots that crop up (hormonal ones mainly) to let my skin heal. - I had stopped using it for as long as a month and my acne didn't return and I only went back on so it would help me exfoliate. I was really sceptical of this and was pretty furious when I went to the doctors and was told that I had to try this first. Unbelievably glad I did. A friend of mine also went on it at the same time as me, who had terri

Pros:

Gentle on your skin.

Cons:

Doesn't seem to be as effective at controlling breakouts as other medications I have used (Retin-A).
Not As powerful when it comes to drying and eliminating existing acne as Retin-A
Overall poor product.

I am almost 19 years old and have been dealing with acne for nearly half of my life. As I have aged and slowly grown out of puberty, the severity of my acne has decreased. That is not to say that I have not been using medications to keep it in check in the mean time. I had been using retin-a micro .1% for the past two years or so with generally positive results. I would get around one minor breakout a month that would typically go away within a few days or so, but, as I am sure many people who visit this site would agree, even that can be agonizing. I decided to try, at my dermotologist's urging, to try out epiduo. It should be said that this medication is simply a combination of a synthetic retinoid and benzol peroxide [two medications that are typically prescribed in tandem, as they were for me in the form of retin-a and duac]. I mention this because I feel it is important that people considering this medication look at it realistically, rather than accept it as Jesus in topical medication form as I was foolish enough to. I began using the medication immediately with the optimism I mentioned above. I expected and was prepared for the initial breakout that is standard with these such medications, but as the weeks turned to months and before I knew it my entire summer was all but lost to a newfound increase in acne severity, I knew I had made a mistake. As I said above, this medication was simply not as effective in preventing or treating my acne as anything I have used before. I suppose my point is one of warning. If anyone is on the fence going into this medication while coming from moderate success with another, please take your time and consider the consequences at stake. I know how terrible acne is for people. That's the only reason I wrote this review. I don't want anyone to have to make the same mistake with this medication that I did. That being said, if epiduo is what you choose, I hope it gives you more happines

Pros:

None for my son

Cons:

It removed my sons pigmentation on his face.

USE WITH CAUTION I purchased this prescription for my 13 yr old son with moderate acne. He used once a day, at bed time, for no more than 2 wks. At about a week I noticed him becoming pale. His teachers were sending him to the nurse. I wish I would have stopped using right then but I continued for another week until my son looked awful, like a myme. It has been over 7 months and he still has not gotten his normal pigmentation back. This product ruined my sons face and Galderma will do no more than send me back the money it cost me, and that is only after numerous phone calls and paperwork. I am completely dissatisfied and warn all to use with caution. P.S. I gave it a 1 rating only because I had to,

Pros:

none so far except that my insurance covered the whole expense

Cons:

red and VERY dry skin

I have used it now about 5 weeks and have seen no results. It made my skin so dry. I had to buy a new lotion for extra dry skin and reapply throughout the day. It might be worth it if I was starting to see result, but my skin has actually gotten worse since I started using. I have tried many different topical medications and do not recommend this for someone with severe hormonal acne.

Pros:

Treats mild-moderate acne
Treats cysts

Cons:

Drying
Redness
Peeling
Takes a while to really work

I had mild-moderate acne since I was 13 or 14. I used many dermatologist prescribed treatments, the best of which for me was Differin. I used differin probably for about a year which really cleared my skin and I went on Yaz as well, which I think really did the trick. From 17-18 I had almost no acne whatsoever - I had an occasional pimple from time to time, but nothing that wouldn't heal in a day or two. I still had blackheads and oily skin, but I pretty much gave up trying to solve that. I went through a very stressful experience this summer which made my skin do a complete 180. All of a sudden I was breaking out in big red pimples all over my face - in places I never even broke out before, and was getting huge cysts almost every day that would take forever to heal and leave a scar. I decided to go back on a dermatologist treatment and I was given Epiduo and Aczone. I started using Epiduo once a day at night and Aczone in the morning. I have semi-sensitive skin, so Epiduo caused dryness and redness that I still get, even about two months into the treatment. It took about one solid month of treatment to see any improvement in my acne and two months to start looking clearer. Unfortunately, Epiduo does not do anything for my blackheads. Recently I stopped using Aczone (I didnt feel it really did anything) and started using Epiduo in the morning too. It had made my skin red and dry, but I started putting moisturizer over Epiduo and that seems to be helping. I would recommend this product to people with mild-to-moderate acne, but be patient! I wanted to give up so many times because my skin definitely got worse before it got better, but the best thing to do is give it a lot of time. My daily routine: Morning: Eucerin Soothing Redness Wash Epiduo Garnier Gel-Cream Moisturizer Night: Eucerin Soothing Redness Wash used with Clarisonic Skin Brush 10% Glycolic Acid Wash (from dermatologist) Epiduo Garnier Gel-Cream Moisturizer C

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
