A way of using benzoyl peroxide in combination with the topical retinoid, adapalene, that studies show works a bit better than benzoyl peroxide alone. Comes with side effects for the first weeks and can bleach fabric. Note: When used correctly, benzoyl peroxide on its own can completely clear the skin.

Pros:

None so far

Cons:

My face itches and burns right after I apply, I don't think my acne has improved any

I've been using this product along with Minocycline 100 mg 2xday and Cerave facewash and moisturizer for about a month and a half, and my acne has not improved. I still get big cysts on my chin and jawline and when I wake up in the morning after applying the Epiduo from the night before, it is a garantee that I will have white heads in those same places. This was the first time I went to the derm and she talked to me for literally 30 sec and prescribed this medication to me. Oh and its $220.00 without insurance...nice. I set up another appointment with a different derm thats in a couple weeks. Hopefully they can help me out.

Pros:

It cleared up my acne really nice, now I only get one little pimple every once in awhile, and then I just put a little on a and it goes away.

Cons:

It's a little drying, but if you use a GENTLE (I use aveeno daily scrub) it will be fine.

I am a 14 year old girl, and I think this product works great for teenagers, not sure about adults. The best way to use this is to wash your face with the Cetaphill Ant-Bacterial bar, morning and night, don't use a face wash with medication because that will be too much with Epiduo, plus this routine is what my dermatolagist gave me,so I'm not making it up. Then put on the Epiduo. It also improves your overall skin tone!

Pros:

clears up acne!

Cons:

none!

I'm 35 and started having acne problems a few years ago- never in high school, but now as an adult :( I've tried tons of medications, creams, washes, etc for my acne. This is the first time that a product has really worked for me. I broke out really bad the first week of use, but after that my face has been pretty clear. I do still get one or two spots prior to my cycle, but the epiduo helps it go away quickly. I also use clarisonic w/ proactive to cleanse my face (twice a day) as well as using epiduo twice a day. My face is really oily so I didn't have any issues w/ dryness, flaking or redness.

Pros:

clears up acne

Cons:

DRIES YOUR FACE LIKE CRAZY
burns
you must be patient

I bought this product on 1/24 and today is 1/30. so i've been using for 6 days, twice a day, because that's what my doctor instructed me to do and BOY is she crazy!!! haha it completely dried out my face :( and turned it extremely and embarrassingly red. :( I was pretty disappointed with the actual Epiduo website because it says to use a cleanser such as Cetaphil???? Are they on crack?? That face wash combined with Epiduo is what initiated my extreme redness and intense burning. CETAPHIL BURNS!!!!! I don't recommend it, and I have never considered myself to have sensitive skin, but apparently I was wrong. I can't seem to find a face wash or moisturizer that doesn't make my skin burn now that i've been using Epiduo. HOWEVER, this stuff does clear acne like no one's business. My initial breakout after using this product wasn't bad, I may have had like two zits, but other than that everything seems to have cleared up quickly. I had really bad acne on both sides of my face. by the jaw line and it looked so bad to the point where i was really self conscious about it. but now everything seems to be working as i was told. The only thing I don't like is that my face is as red as a lobster and my face is peeling. I don't know when the burning or peeling will stop but I am definitely cutting down to using this product ONCE every other day. If you're like me and thought you didn't have sensitive skin.. think again! because this product is extremely harsh. but it does get the job done within time. it's only been 6 days for me, but i'm excited to see what the results will be even farther into the future! :)

Burns in the sun

I am 22 years old and I started getting acne in my late teens. I have wasted this year alone over $700 on facials and products at this high end spa. Every time I got a facial my face would be red for 3-5 days. My face would only stay clear for a week maybe 3. I finally decided to see a proffesional about 3 weeks age. I must say I wish I would had done it years ago. I have wasted so much on retail non working products. I tried proactive only worked for a couple weeks. I recomend everyone to reserch the best dermatologist and go for it. Might as well spend the money and clear your face ones and for all. You will just keep spending other wise. Epiduo works but it can be very expensive I saved $75 with a coupon I got on there site. My Pimpels are all gone. I still have black heads, I did pop them. I put Epiduo over the pop black heads and they have not been back. My demoatologist also prescribed me doxycycline hyclate pills. I take two a day. This pill are very strong and can make your stomach hurt bad. Well good luck getting rid of your acne and I completely recomend Epido. Go for it!

Pros:

Manages acne
Easy to apply

Cons:

Initial breakout
Burning
Dryness
May take a long time to see results

I have been using this product for approximately 9 months. I switched to Epiduo after my skin developed a resistance to the antibiotic in Duac, which kept my skin clear for about 6 months. The initial breakout lasted somwhere around 2-3 months for me. It was probably the worst my skin ever was. In addition, pimples would scar like never before. At around 6-7 months, I did notice improvement. However, I would still have breakouts, and numerous red marks and scars. Today, my acne is somewhere between light and moderate (moderate probably on occasion). However, all Epiduo really did for me was bring my acne back to what it was like before I ever used a prescription medication. In fact, it might be a little worse than it originally was. I will probably use Epiduo for another month to finish the tube, and will go back to simply benzoyl peroxide (considering I just lost my health insurance). Overall, Epiduo was not really worth it...not to mention the insane burning and dryness in the first few months. I wasted so much money trying to find a moisturizer that wouldn't make the burning worse.

Pros:

It works great! I have been using for over a year and I would say it takes a solid three four months for it to completely work. that is if you are consistently putting epiduo on every night. I can't stress enough that it takes time I guarantee that you won't see results the first month just stick with it and in time you will see that it does work. I still will get the occasional zit but I have noticed they disappear fast if you leave them alone and let the medicine do its work.

Cons:

It makes my face a little red :( but my face is super sensitive. I also believe that it give my face a slight shine. It still burns my face after a year of use. These problems are cause because I put to much on so be smart use small quantities.

Well worth it if you have insurance that covers it. Just stick to it and you are bound to get results.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
