give it time
I made an account just to review this. I'll try to be as detailed as possible. I started getting acne when i was about 18. (now 24) I had never had any before that and then over the course of like two months it went from nothing to full fledged cystic acne. I get it all around my mouth, chin, and jawline. Almost nowhere else. At this time, I went vegetarian and then a year later vegan. It never occured to me that could affect anything. My doctor said to make sure to pop a B12 every now and then but never mentioned anything else. Also I went from no BC to Mirena that year. I tried everything except for accutane. Antibiotics (worked but knew this wouldn't be good for me long term), BP, SA (neither did anything), retin-a (took it for almost two years. i bought into that whole "it gets worse before it gets better" but it never did. in fact it destroyed my skin.). Switched facewash from cetephil to extremely diluted dr bronners (helped some, not a ton but helped my face not itch and be as dry), started washing my face with the dr bronners + distilled water (distilled water does help. again not a lot, but whenever i live somewhere with old pipes my face breaks out because i assume the minerals the water picks up through the pipes), OCM (this helped some too, at first it helped a lot, but then my acne kinda picked back up, although not as bad as when i was on retin-a). After trying OCM and realizing that while it wasnt perfect, it helped WAY more then retin-a, I decided to look into more "natural" things. I looked up things that actually had been studied to have an affect and one of the first things that came up was Zinc. At first i started taking it jsut to see what happened, but as i did more research i realized i was probably very deficient since im vegan and have been for years. I didn't have the white spots on my nails but i had hang nails all the time on every single finger. Now for the timeline: Feb 7--started taking 15mg of zinc picolinate (thorne brand) once a day March 7--saw no change. I was willing to be patient because all the studies seemed to be over about three months, but when i looked it up i realized the studies were based off of 30mgs so i thought about uping to that. but then i read that vegans can be highly deficient so...... March 8--started taking 100mg of zinc picolinate (blue bonnet brand) a day--50mg at lunch and 50mg at dinner. make sure you dont take it with any other medicine ( i take my antidepressent in the morning to avoid interference) March 16--started to see a difference--no new ones, current ones seemed to be shrinking March 19--finally at the point i didnt HAVE to wear make up. decided to cut down since it was clearing up and i know that long term, high doses arent good. Cut back to 50mg March 26--doing better. not perfect, but way way way better. got rid of all my blackheads. April 19--great! not perfect, but im okay with that. also i think if im truly deficient it may take my body a long time to catch up. cut back to 15mg just for maintence. So thats pretty much it. Hopefully i covered everything. Id say it cleared my acne by about 70%. My routine is: nothing in the morning, try to avoid face make up if possible. zinc at dinner. Wash face with olive or almond oil every other night (dr bronners unscented the other night, extremely diluted with distilled water) and rinse with distilled water. on occasion (like twice a month) i exfoliate with baking soda and olive oil and rinse, then use ACV after. but really the zinc is the number 1 thing. just wanted to be thorough cause i know how much it helps.

Pros:

increased clarity
fewer pimples
less leukonychia

Cons:

infrequent nausea (take w/ meals)
remembering to take

i have also found that zinc helps considerably, but does not eliminate, my acne. i won't repeat what everyone else has already said, but it's definitely worth a try. also try the picolinate formulation, as this has increased bioavailability. also, an fyi for any white people out there w/ IBS-like symptoms and a suspected zinc deficiency...talk to your doctor about getting tested for celiac disease. it's the most underdiagnosed GI disease (almost exclusively in whites, esp northern european ancestry), and can cause all sorts of malabsorption problems including zinc. symptoms are usually fairly mild, so that vast majority of people who have it don't know it.

Pros:

cheap
easily obtainable
improves immunity
controls sebum 50 percent-- the most
definitely improved growth of nails
Natural
No side effects!( in the right dose)
produced vivid dreams

Cons:

it should be taken with food...
or else an upset stomach will occur
(pls heed experiences of other reviewees. this is normal which should not be a reason to be afraid of)

a safe dose of uptp 150 mg is allowed per day
average dose should be between 30-60 mg

(much more highly reccomended for men/boys) Men should take this supplement more since it is easily depleted through "personal activities". It seems to be regulating sebum as i noticed less clogged pores. I also less allergies such as allergic rhinitis. For acne---it improved healing time by half sebum production-- it cut production in half producing a more thinner consistency Skin--- gives off a slight glow... and healing of skin allergies and itchiness/dryness Body/ Muscles--- i noticed improved muscle tone reproductive organ-- improved erection Semen-- increased volume and consistency I tested Zinc in the form of Zinc picolinate with 2 mg of copper... i believe the right form should be taken, as not all is absorbed well. 6o mg daily taken with food ( i timed it when i ate meat for better absorption) This is best taken in combination with other therapies as it provides 40-50% improvement.. I highly recommend taking this as a daily supplement moreso for males in their teens/adult males and with HORMONAL ACNE..

Pros:

it works for me, only been taking for a week, acne not clear, but dramatically reduced.

Cons:

none so far

i'm 40 years old and have suffered hormonal acne since mid teens, i have tried loads of skincare, pills, herbal remedies, and decided enough was enough, my next stop was to ask the dr for help....but before i did, something caught my eye about zinc for acne, so i bought some zinc tablets (10mg) from chemist and starting taking them just one week ago....and for the first time in over 20 years i finally see a difference!! i usually flare up 5 days before a period, especially around my jawline/temples/neck, and i always have big red (and small red) spots on my chest and back, my face can be spot free for a couple of days before the cycle begins again, altho my back and chest are never spot free.... i am anemic, so i take iron (ferrous sulphate prescription) daily, along with vit E, calcium and vit D, evening primrose and a B complex tablet (as i'm a veggie) every day,....also as i take iron, i take my tablet with a vit C drink...(which they gave me when i was in hospital as it helps absorb the iron) please note this if you find you are anemic....tea and coffee depletes iron, so best taken with fresh orange juice or vit c drink..... anyway....i am 1 day away from a period and my face and neck is completely clear....but the biggest change has been on my back and chest....yes i still have some tiny pink dots...but no great big bumpy spots...and as far my back!!!!...wow...i noticed the other day that my back felt different...then i realised its cos it didn;t feel like a pebble dashed building....it felt smooth!...i got my daughters to take photos so i could see...and although there is the odd small spot...probably about 15....it is no where near what its been for the past 25 years.i probably had over 100 spots on my back and shoulders.....i couldn;t believe this was as a result of taking zinc, so i googled and came accross this site...i just had to register and share my experience....this has been such a quick result....and i will review again after

Pros:

--Easy to add to daily regimen
--No initial breakout
--Keeps skin clear from the inside out

Cons:

--Can make you nauseous if taken on an empty stomach

I have been taking Zinc now for about a year, and it's been a huge component in keeping my skin clear. My biggest complaint with the regimen my dermatologist set me up with is that it only addresses the symptoms of my acne, it doesn't do anything for preventing it. So I decided to do some research, and I discovered that acne can be lessened from the inside out. After hearing dermatologist after dermatologist say that my acne had nothing to do with my diet, I decided to see if maybe my diet did have something to do with my acne. I started eating a lot healthier, incorporating more fruits and veggies, less soda and fast food, and adding a couple supplements known to help control acne. What do you know, my acne completely went away! I take 60mg of zinc every day in addition to a fish oil supplement. I know these two things make a difference in my skin because for a period of about three months I stopped taking both and my skin started breaking out every single day again! Once I started taking zinc and fish oil again, my acne diminished in about a week, and my skin has been clear ever since. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 is I still get a small breakout around that time of the month. Luckily, though, it heals so much faster than it used to, and I'm 100 percent clear the rest of the month :)

Pros:

- Healthier complexion, meaning, more of a peachy and even skin tone (in combination with other supplements and topicals I use)
- Definitely doesn't break you out
- A paste made from one pill can really soothe a moderate pimple and take away redness
- No new pimples since I've been taking it
- A noticeable difference in the oiliness of my skin, and plus, it's summer, so I can REALLY tell, cause I get a very "sheened" up face in summer.

Cons:

None for me

I went to GNC and got a bottle of Zinc 30 with 100 tablets. It's chelated. I take two a day: one with breakfast, one with dinner, so I get a total of 60 mg per day. Zinc has caused me absolutely no side effects. Give it a shot!

Pros:

easy to take
works very well on redness and bumps

Cons:

you have to take the right form of zinc in the right dose, otherwise it won't work

I have done some research on zinc supplements and found out that you should best take zinc monomethionine, since this form is best absorbed. You could take other forms of zinc but then you should take more, because other forms of zinc are only absorbed for 30%. The dose of ACTIVE zinc you should take is 15 mg. If you are on birth control pills or if you drink a lot of tap water you are likely to have a shortage of zinc because BCP's and tap water contain a lot of copper, which depletes zinc in te body. Then you should take 20-30 mg of active zinc a day. I combine a zinc supplement with zinc cream, this has dramatically improved my (acne) rosacea within a week.

Pros:

makes skin glow (as a result of it being more flush), acne takes 10x less time to heal

Cons:

made my skin extra sensitive around the eyes, still have some acne

I love finding holistic cures for my acne. I'm taking zinc with fish oil, vitamin c, and a multivitamin. unfortunately, my multi has 11mg of zinc and then, i take 30mg in the morning and night. i plan on cutting down to just 50mg once i finish this bottle. i've only been using this for a week, but i can already tell that zinc has brought out all this under acne that i knew was always there, but well it just brought it to the surface -- and with a vengeance. again though, my acne heals so much faster with this stuff! i'm excited to see what will happen once this under acne heals. reading these reviews made zinc sound like a miracle cure, so i felt i should just tell you all about my beginning experiences. on another note, i have also heard that taking zinc with fish oil is one of the best combinations for acne, so read up on that as well. good luck! this stuff is definitely worth the try.
