Pros:

Have seen improvement, generic version is inexpensive

Cons:

Long-term use, potential allergic reactions

I have been on Septra DS for 6 months and have seen a great improvement in my skin, however, I am using it in combination with Retin-A (10 months), so I'm not sure which (or both) is causing the improvement. I was very hesitant to use this because I've heard a lot about allergic reactions, both mild and severe. Luckily I have not experienced any adverse reaction to this medication.

Pros:

really does clear up the skin fast and effectively! don't need to take it twice a day and it still works when you skip a day.

Cons:

everytime i take just one pill i get cutaneous candiasis (skin fungi) in the same place on my skin. it never fails. taking a broad spectrum antibiotic will def allow opportunistic infections to occur since your killing bad and good bacteria!

clears acne

Pros:

Clears up skin in weeks and stays clear!

Cons:

Huge powdery pill, have to get used to swallowing
Sensitivity to sun
Loss of appetite?

Reading about the allergic reactions can be scary, I admit, but for those of you who are willing to brave it for for a clear complexion, the results are rewarding. I've had cystic acne, mostly on my chin, for about two years now and I've tried ortho-tri bcp as well as doxy, but nothing worked. My dermatologist recommended Bactrim to me about three months ago, and after breaking out two weeks after starting to take it, I haven't broken out since. Not even a tiny whitehead. Now I'm not afraid to go out or be social! I've even skipped days and gone one a day (instead of the recommended two) and been clear... Although I still have some scars and underlying bumpiness/redness from previous breakouts that isn't going away, fresh ones aren't popping up.

Pros:

Works fast, and effectively. Withing a few days my acne went down, didnt make me sick, don't see much sun sensitivity

Cons:

Unsure about the long-term side effects. I have taken this before, and remember my acne becoming kind of resistant to it after a year.

Great product to cure the problem temporarily, however it does a lovely job. Known in Israel as Depsyl Forte, and don't let some arrogant doctor try to tell you that you can't take it cause it's not for acne.

Softer skin, no side effects, cleared me up within 8 weeks - ONLY THING THAT WORKED FOR ME. DR. said I can be on it til I die.

Cons:

The pill is a bit big - that's all

I have had acne since age 11. I am 22 and was done with topicals - this is the best thing that has ever happened to my skin

Pros:

Just began taking this med, and hope there will be lots of pros in the follow up! Very cheap with insurance!

Cons:

Just began, so hopefully I won't experience any. Have heard of all the side effects with Sulfa drugs. I pray to God I don't have a problem with this drug, as I am done going in to the derm saying I am allergic and need a new pill.

I used to be on Minocycline before breaking out into hives. Derm recommended this instead. I have heard all about the side effects of Steven-Johnsons Syndrome and Blood count lowered, and the ever present allergic reaction. I pray I can tolerate this med, and be able to have clear skin again!

Pros:

i tried doxycyline, erythromycin, 2 courses accutane...this works the best. i use it with differin and clindamycin 1%

Cons:

still a few pimples occasionally...

it works, not the first line for acne treatment, but much better than the typical treatments!! may be more difficult to get your derm to prescribe it.
