Pros:

clear up acne a little

Cons:

got hives!!

this worked well at first I think (although the clear up may simply have been a good time of the month hormone wise) but after 10 days of no side effects, I broke out into hives that took 4 days to go away.

Pros:

Cleared up my acne perfectly very quickly!

Cons:

I stopped taking it, and five months later I was very stressed and my acne came back, so I've been using it again for a couple days

I experienced no side affects, and I am on it again, so I have been very pleased with the results.

Pros:

For those who can tolerate it, Bactrim seems to clear people up well.

Cons:

Looks like a lot of us can't tolerate it!

Side effects included nausea and fatigue ... tenth day I broke out in a rash and had to quit. If this works for you, great - but watch carefully for side-effects.

Pros:

Clears acne fast
Simple to take

Cons:

None so far

I've been taking Trimethoprim for about 9 weeks now and my skin has nearly totally cleared. I've had no side effects, so I just hope it keeps working. I just wish I had found this sooner.

Pros:

It cleared up the acne in just a few weeks. I took it for a year, two pills a day for first 6 mos, and then 1 pill a day. Had NO acne while taking. Had no side effects. Very mild skin dryness -- nothing compared to Accutane.

Cons:

My acne did come back several months after I stopped. My doc told me 5% of patients are allergic. It's a popular antibiotic used with staph infections -- not good if your body's built up a tolerance (after a year or so).

It's the best I've taken, among a long list of acne medications. I never experienced crazy hangovers. just don't take it that night if you're drinking. It's cheap with insurance.

Pros:

Cleared up my cystic acne in a week. Amazing drug! I've tried everything, including 2 rounds of Accutane and other antibiotics. Nothing cleared up my skin like Bactrim. I wish it were safer - I'd use it forever!

Cons:

I worry about using it longterm and the effects it may be having on my body.

I sincerely wish there were a drug like Bactrim that was safe to use longterm. Don't doctors realize that for many of us severe acne is a life long problem???

Pros:

Cleared up the acne on my back somewhat.

Cons:

I found out I was allergic to it once a rash broke up on my body. Went to the emergency room and got a steroid treatment. Benadryl did not work to get rid of the rash, needed something stronger

It is strong stuff. You need to weight the pros and cons before starting it. Sure it will clear your acne, but skin diseases and an unhealthy liver and kidney, pass..

Cons:

can't drink alcohol(dont do it....it'll give you a bad headache and make u nauseous)

may cause nausea

i started seeing improvement within the first month...i've had reallly bad cystic acne for about 8 years now.I've tried everything, prescription and over the counter. Nothing worked. Then my dermatologist prescribed me bactrim ds. I am on month 2 now....i don't break out as much as I used to...1 or 2 tiny little pimples here and there...my scars are also healing=] i also use retin A it's worth a shot if u r not allergic to sulfa drugs. I am really hoping my acne does not come back once i stop taking this medication
