Pros:

Bactrim is a strong antibiotic that usually works very quickly. If you are not getting results with the tetracycline family, bactrim can do the trick. I stayed clear for about 3 and 1/2 years while on it. I took breaks from it from time to time.

Cons:

Eventually bacteria will become resistance and it will stop working. Not a cure. Only a temporary fix.

It cleared me up great when no other antibiotic worked. Eventually stopped working. Try this before going on accutane to give you a head start and you mostly likely won't have an IB from accutane.

Pros:

Kept me ~80-90% clear for years

Cons:

Caused very painful kidney stones
Lost effectiveness over time

This was my mainstay for many years after having gone on all sorts of antibiotics, topicals, and accutane. It was by far the most effective antibiotic for me, with little to no immediate side effects like most others. But eventually (after a couple years) it caused recurring kidney stones. I suffered through many kidney stones over a couple years before figuring out it was this medication. My Docs were clueless that this could be a side effect (even though it is listed as a possible side effect online). Haven't had a stone since I've been off of it. It might be rare but a heads up for others that might be on this long term. Trust me, you wouldn't wish your worst enemy to pass a stone - it's that painful. That and the fact that it lost its effectiveness against the acne meant stopping treatment with Bactrim.

Pros:

None for me personally.

Cons:

I had a horrible allergic reaction, including some of the reactions listed as severe and "contact your doctor if"

I couldn't use this because it made me very sick.

Pros:

Clears up chest and back acne wonderfully as well as face, cheap (I get the generic for Bactrim), doesn't make me sick/no real side effects

Cons:

Big pill is kind of annoying, be careful (wear sunscreen!) if you're outside for long periods of time

When I first started taking antibiotics for my acne I was put on doxycycline - and discovered I'm very, very allergic! Then I switched to another brand, which I cannot remember the name...it worked well. Sadly, one of the listed common side effects was nausea and boy it wasn't kidding - I felt sick almost every morning and threw up at least once a week. Not worth it! So, finally, I went to Bactrim. Amazing stuff. It does take at least a couple weeks for you to really notice but on the other hand, I never get sick! In fact other than the clearing of acne, I've noticed absolutely no side effects in taking it. I wish the pill was smaller, but I literally just take it with whatever I'm eating for breakfast...a bite of toast or whatnot, and it works fine. This stuff really helped my chest and back breakouts. Face got better with the help of prescription cleansers, but for my back/chest, within a couple weeks of taking Bactrim I noticed a HUGE improvement, and even though I've

Pros:

I loved this medicine. I did alot for my skin and confidence. It works really really well. I used to get those cystic zits and little ones too. I tried birth control first, then pro active, then tetracycline, then bactrim.

Cons:

that you can become resistant to the medication, and also there is a chance of liver/kidney damage.

its a great medication to get rid of acne, i've been taking it for about 3 years off and on, only so that i do not become resistant to it, my skin has actually improved and i don't need to take as many pills or as often, i only start to take it if i notice more outbreaks or before a big event so i can make sure my skin is clear for my vacation or whatever.

Pros:

Cleared up my skin VERY quickly.

Cons:

Had a negative side effect on my anemia.

I had terrible back/face acne for about 2 years. I tried everything. Bactrim cleared up my face very quickly and left my skin feeling smooth. Not for people who have anemia, like my case, because it can dangerously lower platelets. Once I stopped using Bactrim though, I ended up back to where I started. Just a bit less severe.

Pros:

Incredibly effective, cheap and so far no side effects.

Cons:

It's an antibiotic so can't use indefinitely.

Allergic to Tetracycline and Minocycline so this was gonna be one of my last stops before the A word. Been taking it for about a month and I haven't been this clear for this long in 13 years. If you've tried everything else this is def. worth a shot before accutane.

Pros:

Began seeing results in just a few days; suppressed appetite (lost weight!)

Cons:

I'm allergic :(

I was really excited to try this drug because from what I read it seemed like it's very effective when it comes to clearing up skin. For years I've tried every topical prescription available plus every other antibiotic. This was the last drug my derm was going to prescribe before moving onto Accutane if necessary. I started seeing results after just a few days of taking Bactrim, however unfortunately I developed an allergic reaction after a couple weeks: rash, extreme muscle/joint pain, trouble breathing, etc. While this drug is totally not agreeable with me, I'd still recommend it to others despite the harm it can cause to your body. Just be alert ' if you start developing any signs of an allergy, stop before it gets worse! It can do some scary stuff.

Pros:

Got rid of my larger break outs but i still have little bumps. It took about 2-3 weeks for it to start showing results.

Cons:

If i forget a pill, i notice the next day. I don't know when i'll ever be able to come off it! lol

It's a good acne medication, but i think they're is better out there. Maybe it's just my skin type though. Good luck to everyone else using it though! Acne blows! lol
