Pros:

skin cleared up for a while but after a break from the pill, came back just the same.

Cons:

weight gain, bloatedness, mood swings, emotional states, depression, loss of libido.
(at times, made skin worse!)

i first started on dianette when i was sixteen and my severe acne cleared up after a month or so. the only side effects i noticed were bloatedness around the stomach area and some weight gain. (which made me quite miserable and self concious as i am usually relatively slim.) i took this pill for around six months and once i took a break from it, my skin was just as bad as ever. i restarted dianette after a few months on a different pill yet this time it had no effect on my skin at all. just over a year of being on the pill i became moody, emotional, depressed and teary with no no explination and my sex drive withered to nothing. i lost all interest in my boyfriend and i didn't know what was wrong with me. it would seem that this pill has quite a serious effect on your hormones and mental state! i can't wait to get it out of my system so i can get back to feeling great with my boyfriend again. as far as a contraceptive, stick to condoms! there are other remedies for your skin and it does clear up with time and age too. i have come off this pill as i am now trying for a baby and i do NOT intend to go back on it...ever!

Pros:

I had tried everything and nothing had worked. I had moderate acne made worse with CSP (compulsive skin picking). This made my skin less oily and is free unlike everythinge else.

Cons:

Slight weight gain, makes you very dependant and scared of coming off it. Only prevention not a cure. After 3 years I came off it, got acne x 100 and begged to go back on it.

It never completely cleared up my skin. I started it when I was 20 and have only just come off it at 33 (1 month ago)! My skin has been clear for over a year and I'm hoping it's more to do with my age. But I will be keeping a close eye on any skin changes. A couple of things I have noticed is that I have a crazed sex drive now - had no idea my sex drive had gone down so much! Also I am less hungry all the time. I would only recommend this pill if you are truly desparate. Acne can make you so depressed, you just have to weigh up the pros and cons. I think it's best to see if you grow out of it rather than becoming dependant ona drug.

Pros:

Much clearer, smoother, less oily skin! I only get the occasional spot now!

Cons:

All the possibly side effects (although i have not yet experienced any), That you can not take the drug for too long

I have been taking dianette for almost 6 months. It is the only spot treatment that has dramatically improved my skin however after visiting my doctor today, I am going to have to stop the treatment :( It took me months to build up the courage to take it after reading many scary reviews but I have not experienced any side effects. My main worry now is coming off the pill as I will probably return to the way I was :(...but it was good while it lasted- So I would recommend!

Pros:

Skin ess oily and takes longer to get oily throughout the day, less spots, scars are getting a chance to heal, not really any side effects

Cons:

Really really scared of what will happen when i cme off it - not looking forward to that

Ive been using this for 3 months and after reading other womens posts on this drug, i would say its a short term fix, it gives u a nice break from acne for a while. My skin is the clearest its been in a long while. I've not been able to quit the make up just yet, but im getting there - and my boyf's noticed too!

Saved my skin with no side effects
Hello, I developed acne when I was 13 and it just never went away. It destroyed my confidence. When I was 25 (after years of the doctors fobbing me off saying I would grow out of it) I was in having an appointment with the nurse (ear infection) when she asked how long I had the acne for. I told her 12 years and she was shocked a doctor had never offered me treatment. She made me an appointment with the doctor about it so finally a doctor would have to do something about it. The doctor prescribed Dianette. I was taking it for three months without any real affect and I was suffering from some depression (though that might partially be from the fact my acne wasnt going!) It got really bad, I wouldnt even go out with my friends. In month four my skin started clearing up and the depression went completely. My periods are much lighter and shorter and I dont get PMS or cramps. In the week off your skin doesnt change so if thats a concern for others I didnt notice a difference. The doctor started threatening to take me off it at about the year point but when I spoke to the nurse she said if I have no history of depression/cancer/DVT ect; then there shouldnt be a reason to take me off it. I have no side effects from it, in fact its improved my life no end. I asked about the increased risk in clots/cancer ect; and she said all pills come with that, and since she was a teenager in the seventies they have been told horror stories about the pill which she has never seen come to fruition. There was all sorts saying it caused breast cancer, but she said now we know about the hereditary gene so it cant be ruled out thats what we had seen the whole time. In all she said the increased risk is small and comes with every pill, so why take someone off a pill that is helping so much? All medicines and pills come with possible effects but it doesnt stop us taking them if the good outweighs any small risk. If you do get depression that carries on into about month 4 or 5 I would say come off it, this is probably the most serious and probable side effect. If you have history of depression or it runs in your family dont take it!!

Its not for everyone - but we are all different...
At 39 and years of moderate acne, I have started Dianette along with Oxytetracyclin. I am sick of feeling ugly and spotty and I was becoming obsessed with my skin. I felt people were looking at my spots and not at me. I tried everything and spent hundred of pounds on treatments and products! I think if you are going to get acne there is nothing you can do. It isn't down to what you eat, its your physical make up/the way you are! I've been on Oxy for 6 weeks now and have just finished my first pack of Dianette. I'm not sure what I think which is why I'm reading these reviews!! in the first week my skin was amazing,,,,,happy wasnt the word!! Then it started to clear out and get spottier. My acne is slowly getting better but I have still had the odd BIG spot. Maybe its still too early to tell. Regarding Dianette - I was frightened to take this with all the horror stories and being 39. However I have never smoked, I don't suffer from depression, I don't have family history of breast cancer or dvt and my bp is low. So I went for it and made my friend promise to tell me if my personality changed! I have to say, I feel fine, absolutely no different to normal. I will be more vigilant with bp checks and smear tests etc but so far so good. AND...my hair and skin isn't as greasy! Only downside is my boobs ache a bit. I am hoping they will grow a bit! I guess everyone is different, I will persevere with Dianette as I REALLY want clear skin - I hate being the spotty one! I would just say be aware of all the side effects and if you suspect any, then be safe and come off of it.

Pros:

works if you are sure that your acne is hormonal and if you take consistently for a few months. you have to be persistent with this!

Cons:

the obvious one that you can only take it for a certain amount of time due to the risks, but it seems it depends on what the doctor thinks. i havent really found any other cons apart from that i still have period pains which i hoped might stop but its worth it for nice skin

about 4 months ago i broke in the worst acne of my entire life due to the pill cilest, it literally ruined my life and im still suffering from the phscological effects of that because it looked so bad, so my doctor changed me to dianette which is an anti androgen. it is now about three months in and my skin is really improving i dont have many spots now but im dealing with all the scarring which still really bothers me but at least i can touch my face without cringing.

Pros:

Some people claim it works for them as a short-term solution.

Cons:

Mood swings like mad.
Going off of it increases androgen production, which pretty much equals a whole lotta angry red pimples.
Loss/gain of appetite depending on the person

This drug comes in generic (ex. Cyestra-35) and name brand (Diane-35) forms. Reviews favour the name brand in terms of maintaining decent/good moods, breast tenderness, etc. It may work well for you at first, but going off of it is pretty much hell.

Pros:

Works wonders for your acne and oily skin

Cons:

Takes a while to kick in. Spots come back when you come off Dianette.

I have been on Dianette for about six/seven years. I haven't experienced any of the side effects that others have been talking about. No depression, no weight gain etc. Think I might have even lost a few pounds! Oily skin and hair clears up first then after a while spots become less and less until you only get a couple now and then. Doctors do say it's not as safe as other options and you shouldn't be on it long term. Over the years I have tried many alternatives (Yasmin, antibiotics, Cilest) and have even tried to go without any medication - spots always come back all over my chin. The only thing that works for me is Dianete. But I don't want to take it forever. Any recommendations of what I should try next? I'm 25 - surely acne doesn't last forever does it??
