Pros:

Cleared up my skin when used with Tazorac
Saw improvement fairly quickly

Cons:

Shedding hair
SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING!
Made me break out even WORSE than before I was on it.

I started taking Solodyn 90mg in conjunction with Tazorac 0.05% in late March 2009. After a few weeks, it started working, and soon enough, my face was nearly flawless. Regardless, my dermatologist prescribed my Solodyn 135mg, and still, my face was nearly flawless. I LOVED my clear skin. Everything was perfect. Then, in September 2009, I had my wisdom teeth removed. After that, both prescriptions suddenly stopped working, and I broke out even worse than my original acne. It was bad. Really bad. There was hardly a spot on my face which wasn't covered in pimples, varying in size. There were a lot of huge zits. I still continued to use the Solodyn and Tazorac as recommended, and the size of the zits went down, but the number increased. It wasn't until late December 2009 when I stopped Solodyn and Tazorac all together that my face actually started to clear up. I believe that by taking Solodyn, an antibiotic, that the P-acne bacteria in my body had built up an immunity to the Solodyn, thus rendering it useless. Why it came on so suddenly, I'm not sure. Still to this day, my acne is worse after treatment with Solodyn. Be careful, you're not supposed to take Solodyn for long periods of time, it warns that it can change the color of hair and teeth. And it only seems that it works in short periods of time-- 6 months or less. My doctor fed me the line that "Solodyn is supposed to be the best out there." Some crap that was.

Pros:

Clears up exsisting acne fast

Cons:

causes new acne
causes hyperpigmentation
horrible side effects - nasuea, dizzyness, crazy dreams, headaches, and lethargy
expensive w/o insurance ($1000.00)

I'm sort of on the fence about Solodyn. I have light acne, but once in a blue moon I will break out and get a cluster of hormonal cystic acne on my cheek. Over Christmas I got a couple on my cheek & on my forehead. I decided I didn't want to wait two or three months for it to heal, so I went to my dermatologist. I was prescribed 55mg of Solodyn and right away I could tell it was working. It made my exsisting acne clear up right away. However, if you stop taking it for one day, it will cause you break out, but make it even worse, which is what happened to me. There was a mix up with my prescription and I had to wait four days for it to be refilled and during that time, the Solodyn caused me to break out into five huge cystic acne. I'm Asian with fair but olive skin, meaning I scar easily. Ususally when I break out, it leaves a bit of a mark, but with Solodyn, it left me with large purplish marks that I've never had before. If you don't want pigmentation, don't take this drug. When you're on this, man do you pigment. Also, the new acne that gets pushed out by the Solodyn takes forever to go away. The five that was on my cheek took a month a half to go away. It also makes any little bump you have turn into cystic ance. Transformed a small bump on my cheek turn into a pus filled papule. I'm on my third month, and I'm slowy weaning myself off this product. I like that it got rid of my exsisting acne, however, the resulting acne from the Solodyn isn't worth it. Neither are the side effects. My doctor told me to take it w/food, so it hasn't been that bad. One night I forgot to take it w/food and got the worst headache coupled with some pretty crazy dreams. Lesson learned, eat it with food and you'll be fine. If you have light acne, I probably wouldn't recomment you take this, but if your acne is severe or moderate, anything is worth a try. I, on the other hand, would not do this again.

Pros:

none

Cons:

*turns your skin red
*drying skin
*pimples become bigger

I was on solodyn for 8 weeks and it only made my acne worse. My pimples got bigger than before and your face begins to hurt after a while. I decided to stop using this product and two weeks later my skin felt a little better.

Pros:

cleared up acne
great skin

Cons:

bad side effects
yeast infections
once i went off it, acne got 10x worse!

if you dont have bad side effects, this medicine is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. but if you do have side effects, then this medicine is horrible. i had the worst yeast infections and after i stopped, my acne got even worse than before. Now, i am dealing with the worst acne of my life all because i stopped this medication. For me, the cons definitely outweigh the pros.

Pros:

It seemed to clear the acne up while I was taking it.

Cons:

A BIG CON - I got pseudomembranous colitis from using this! Living with acne would have been better than getting some other more serious disease.
The acne returned after I stopped taking it.

If you don't want to risk getting a more serious health problem, don't take it. For me it wasn't worth it. Now I'm trying to cure my acne naturally (and waiting it out).

Pros:

Cleared up some of my acne
Got rid of some of my discoloration

Cons:

Caused patches of hyperpigmentation on upper arms and back

This helped with some of my acne but it didn't completely stop me from breaking out. I did not like the fact that it gave me more hyperpigmentation(I'm already trying to get rid of PIH from when I was a teenager). Now my problem is worse...

Pros:

Some skin affects on the face

Cons:

headaches
fatigue
back skin and chest area had hive like pimples

I had told my doctor my hesitation to try another tetracyline product especially since the first one did not work, but the 10 mins she spent in the room she prescribed this in congruent with a topical. I am not sure if it is the topical or the medication itself that works, but both my back and chest area have broken out horribly and they do not get the topical, yet i do recall her saying to wear spf on exposed skin in order to prevent it. It has not helped and i have only been taking it for 2 weeks now. The price everyone else has paid is because of insurance. if you do not pay for insurance the price is very hefty. i paid an exorbitant amount for only 30 days of 65 mg it was 850 plus tax which i dont remember how much tax was

Pros:

This medication drastically reduced my acne for the most part.

Cons:

As soon as you stop using Solodyn you break out like crazy. Also I experienced vertigo that was really bad at about the 6 month mark and minor liver problems.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Seriously find a topical that works for you, this stuff can be dangerous. I can't take it anymore because of the liver problems and severe vertigo I had.

Pros:

temporary eliminates acne
no side effects (for me)
inexpensive with insurance

Cons:

acne comes back

I was on this for 6 months, cleared my acne and i was happy for a while. 3 months after i came off it, acne came back and has become progressively worse since. I went back on it when i was desparate since it worked the first time and after 3 wks i wasn't seeing results and decided that it wasn't worth the effort since it would just come back in the end anyway.

Pros:

really l haven't had a long enough time to see much at all. No pros thus far

Cons:

Bad reaction for me. Itchy rash from my scalp to my knees. Joint pain/swelling. Severe headaches. VERY frequent urination.

This was my first ever acne med for moderate/severe acne. First thing I noticed is that if I drank the 8 glasses of water a day they reccomend, I would literally go to the bathroom every 10 min or so. I was waking up 4-9 times a night which really hurt me. I started to walk a fine line of trying to drink enough to keep dehydration at bay, but not enough so I could stop being tied to the bathroom. I've now been on the med for over 2 weeks. Then the headaches started. never had such horrible headaches before this. Cause lightheadedness ect. Then came the rash. Started on my rear end of all places. Now it's on my scalp to my knees and may be starting on the face. Joints began hurting the next day and are now swollen. I was advised to discontinue. yeah, no brainer there. Apparently this is NOT a common reaction, but does happen. Not the drug for me apparently. Kinda glad as it would go up in price within 3 months when the discount card runs out.
